Want to make a statement about the necessity of government services? Shut EVERYTHING down... the ports, the national defense, the food inspectors, the air traffic controllers. That would last about 15 minutes and the Tea-rrorists will crawl back into their hole and stop holding the economy hostage every six months. It's not a public vs. private debate; it's about the teaching methods and curriculum being used. We don't raise educated kids anymore, we manufacture them. This force-fed, dependency-driven model kills any drive for our kids to self-educate and explore...that won't be on the test! We stick them in a chair and yell things at them. We tell them to be quiet. We entertain them with videos of experiments. We send them home to practice this model on themselves. We measure their value by the volume of their output and their ability to recite the thoughts of others. We never ask their opinions.
To fix the problem you need to start at the top of the educational process: the teacher factories, where they instruct the "best and brightest" on the most effective methods of conscription while simultaneously removing from these future teachers their own creativity and desire to help others grow.

Isn't that the supposed reason Google is doing Fiber, to encourage learning, collaboration, and innovation by removing bandwidth as a contraint? Or is this a lie?
I think a twenty-something media age is pretty normal in any large company, tech or not. I work for a large non-tech firm and our average is closer to 28 and the average lifespan of a new hire is around 4 years. Those who stay (i.e. make the 4th year cut) tend to stick around for 25+ years and gobs of money.
Most people start their careers in places that can hire in bulk, train in bulk, manage in bulk, and promote in bulk. You do your time, decide what you want in life, and move "up or out." Assuming you move out, then there will be plenty of smaller companies waiting to hire you for your prior company's investment in your experience and training. Circle of life stuff, really.
I think its just as likely Google Voice will be "Spring Cleaned" out of existence.
Let's say that happens...this isn't as easy as turning off Google Wave. Where do the numbers go? Will future generations call it Port-ageddon? Will there be FCC intervention, socialist cape included? Will puppies be scarified too?

Yes, governments and entities with very valuable data and secrets should always have concerns about espionage, but your average Joe doesn't come into contact with information that is either interesting enough or valuable enough to warrant this level of risk aversion. Your company is either a government contractor, bank, KFC, or possibly megalomaniacal and irrational.

Robert Krampf does a wonderful job of making the subjects (including chemistry) engaging, understandable, age appropriate, and educational. There have been several times when I've had to tell my 10 year old to "turn off that science stuff and go to bed!"
On a related topic, I've only quickly scanned the/. comment blather that's been posted here, much of it against alternative schooling. I commend your family for deciding to take a different path and wish more people would consider the option. Ignore the attacks and focus on what you know to be the best thing for your kids. No one starts homeschooling on a whim and I'm sure it was a difficult decision, even without the ignorant 18 year old critics who are still 15 girlfriends away from discovering reproduction.
