  1. Cal Trans got there first on Mathematicians Solve the Mystery of Traffic Jams · · Score: 1

Over 10 years ago, a study was done by Cal Trans (the State of California Transportation Department) using traffic cameras and they discovered the same thing that mathematicians have just now discovered. Cal Trans did it the old fashioned way: by studying hours of video and doing a little brain work...

The Right to Privacy, as put forth by the Constitution of the United States of America, never intended for any one to be anonymous. Anonymous people have no voice in the government because they are unkown and faceless. Only those who stand up to be counted, by their vote and their enumeration in a census, can be a part of the government.

Privacy means that the gevernment can't look into your life without just cause.

I've tried communicating with these people when they were without a meeting place and suggested using the LASFS clubhouse but I never received a response. Hence I wanted to start my own LUG.

Advantages to using the LASFS clubhouse (for a LASFS sponsored LUG):

    1) Don't have to buy food to stay.
    2) Enough power outlets to plug in a dozen (or more) laptops.
    3) Couches.
    4) Soda vending machine (at $0.50 per can for most brands).
    5) Video projector (has SVGA input port) and screen.
    6) No mundanes giving you funny looks when you start talking tech...
    7) Will not schedule a LUG meeting on a fannish high holy day (San Diego Comic Book Convention, July 26-29, 2007).

From the little I have gleaned in the science classes I've taken over the years (high school and college) it is probably a combination of factors that start an ice age: temperature of the sun, orbit of the Earth (distance from the sun), and lack of green house gasses. The green house gasses in the atmosphere determine how much heat is retained and when there is to liitle of these gasses the heat escapes from the Earth into space.

  17. The real reason on The Hidden Engineering Gender Gap · · Score: 1

I will be blunt: the real reason why there aren't more female techies, self taught or trained, is because most girls are raised to be image consious and being a techie is thought by most non-techies that same as being a nerd. Male techies don't care about how we are percieved. We're too busy showing off to each other to be bothered with how "normal" people view us. It's the same in Science Fiction Fandom; a vast majority of SciFi geeks are male.

If you want to have more female techies you need to destroy the pre-conceived notions about techies on the global level (tell Mattel to stop making the Barbie dolls, etc) and wait for society to catch up.
