if linux wants to get anywhere with mainstream users, there's going to have to be one superior desktop environment, rather than two slightly inferior ones.
not to say that KDE and Gnome are inferior to windows, they are far superior to windows. right now, the type of home users looking toward a windows alternative are going to go straight to mac. if developers are split between two desktop environments that essentially do the same thing, it gets linux nowhere.
now, looking at the real subject at hand, the new gnome version looks pretty good. way better than windows, still worse than mac. i mean seriously, for example, looking at the file manager, Gnome just got the spatial tree view that the Mac has had since at least version 6, i wouldn't be surprised if mac OS 1.0 had that feature in 1984. windows explorer has had that view in the form of windows explorer since windows 95
seriously, this probaly won't be such a big deal as some of you think. all xbox 360 games will probably be on the standard DVDs for maximum compatibility. the HD-DVD capability in the xbox 360 is probably just to support the new video standard for playing movies.
well, the PS2 has sold less than the PSOne, so we can assume the same thing, can't we?
the truth about it is that the NES appealed to everyuone. mario was the only game my mother played. but after that, games started to alienate people with more buttons, more complexity, and more difficult and involving gameplay
it's not that nintendo's console sales dropped beacause they were going downhill, the truth is that the people with NESes and some slightly newer consoles were happy with their gaming experience, and the game industry started to cater more towards people who t41k 1ik3 th1s, n00b!!111
there are a LOT more mothers who like playing mario than there are insane gamers who play complicated, a lot of times not that much fun games all day.
there's a reason super mario bros. is still considered one of the best games of all time (in fact on top of ign's top 100 list). it's not because it's old, or that it was a great way to start an industry (nobody's calling vaccum tube computers the best computers ever made), it was because Super Mario Bros. has gameplay that still is more fun than about 80% or more of the games out there today.
play it for yourself, you'll see. there's no complicated menus, loading times, no crap like that. you don't have to manage your inventory, or worry about running out of ammo, or have to memorize 100 different buttons, it doesn't require two freakin joysticks to move your character. it's as pure as gaming gets, in fact it's probably the most straightforeward flavor of fun around.
it's not because nintendo has done badly or anything like that. it's that the market changed. i mean, personally, i do like a lot of complicated games. but that doesn't mean that the gazillion families who bought the (cheaper) NES system are going to like complicated games like we have today.
is slashdot going to report on every little milestone that firefox makes in the amount that it's downloaded??
it's almost as bad as apple sites reporting how many songs have been sold on itunes. it's like "ha ha! an open source browser is doing well, let's have all the geeks jumping up and down wetting themselves"
"Gamasutra points out that while Nintendo is suffering from reduced profits, neither Sony nor Microsoft's Xbox division are currently making any profit."
it's also interesting to point out that since the NES came out, Nintendo hasn't had a single year in the red. Yes, they've had bad quarters, but they've never lost money for the whole year, something that pretty much 100% of the other game console manufacterers over the past 20 years certainly cannot claim.
the last time nintendo lost money was when they made playing cards.
somebody read the recent article about the future of the net and copied all of their opinions from the article.
the radical changes that are predicted for the future don't always work out. we were supposed to drive electric cars by 2000, we're still driving ford pickups.
what if there was a system of communicating just like IMing, only if the person you wanted to say something to wasn't online, you could still IM them and it would be stored on their IM server until they got back, at which point they'd recieve their message.
it'd be just like GAIM buddy pouncing, only you wouldn't have to leave your computer running all the time to pounce the buddy, the server would handle the pouncing.
i think that could eliminate email almost completely amongst teens.
i don't get how this is a real battle. these are both free products here. google users will use the google one, and MSN users will use the MSN one. there isn't going to be a massive switch between the two, they do the exact same thing!
why are you all pissed off about this?
if you can prove that you bought a pirated copy of windows from an illegal vendor, they are willing to give you a FREE copy of windows.
in fact, if you can't prove it, microsoft gives you a discounted price for windows. i mean come on, they are rewarding you for pirating their software!! what more do you want!? they could be suing you!
just because their software is bad doesn't give you the right to pirate it.
all of apple's computers need to support the core graphics technology, or at least equip the ibooks and mac minis with 64 MB video cards.
for some reason apple has half the video memory of everyone else. the imac G5 has a 64 MB 9600 PRO, seriously can you even buy a 9600 PRO with that little memory?
same goes with the 9200 and 9550. these GPUs have been updated to have 128MB of memory, not 32
that's weird, before i read the article (seeing it on my RSS bookmarks) i thought this article was going to report on talks of nixing the Saturn car brand.
with dashboard out, just like the article implies, i doubt yahoo will continue making its widgets for dashboard.
of course, my comment is kind of an obvious statement...but hey it's 1 in the morning no one should notice.
even if this was a new thing, which it is not, why is it important to report on something that 99% of search sites have already?
is a slashdot article going to come up each time an obscure search engine gets a feature like this? i hope not...
if amazon can patent clicking on a button to order things i don't see how the patent office could reject this one.
in fact, with the types of patents amazon gets i don't see how ANY patents are rejected

at this rate, slashdot should get a "amazon web services patent" section.
is slashdot going to report on every little milestone that firefox makes in the amount that it's downloaded??

ever heard of resident evil?

thank you very much slashdot games subsection, i was really anticipating the review of a month and a half old game!
slashdot games should really stick to gaming NEWS and quit with the halfassed attempts at becoming a legitimate gaming site.

well, this isn't sony we're talking about here, phillips will probably license it.
i would consider myself a geek, but the coverage of this event has to be the most boring thing i've ever read in my life.
i don't get how this is a real battle. these are both free products here. google users will use the google one, and MSN users will use the MSN one. there isn't going to be a massive switch between the two, they do the exact same thing!
i'm sorry, i'll take snoop dogg, thank you very much.

they had to avoid a patent
since when do you have to avoid breeching patents in china?
for the price of a pentium M + an adapter, why not get an Athlon 64 instead? I can't imagine a 1.7Ghz laptop chip performing better than that...
that's weird, before i read the article (seeing it on my RSS bookmarks) i thought this article was going to report on talks of nixing the Saturn car brand.
can you shoot the screen to make the ad stop?
You'd think they could come up with some confirmation dialogue.
confirmation dialog? hell no, i don't want any of that crap on my email client just because there are people out there that don't know how to read!
