The thin client model mainly works because, properly done, the users cannot break their PC. Even if they throw it out the window, or set fire to it, they cannot break it. (If they do that you get another thin client out of the cupboard and plug it in, presto, back online in 5 minutes)
However, the thin client model does mean that the direct attach model has a hard time
Also, there are other reasons for using thin client. For example, I have several client/server database systems that I must use over a transatlantic WAN link, with inadequate web front ends. THe inevitable latency of a WAN link makes these applications unusable. However, if I use a thin client to access the app on a terminal server accross the pond, it becomes just about useable.
Obligatory Spaced quote (from memory so don;t moan I got the words wrong):
Daisy: "I'm going down the shops, do you want anything?" Tim: "i dunno, some porn?" Daisy: "For the last time, I'm not going to buy you porn, Tim. Why don't you just get it from railway sidings like everyone else?" Tim: "No, I'm an adult now, I have to leave it there."
1) Borrow an enormous ammount of money from a rich political colleague to buy a house and not declare it 2) Try to persuade another Govt. department to give passports to wealthy party contributors.
Hence his appointment as an European commisioner: to give you an idea of how un-sackable this makes him, find an accountant, sit them down, and ask them if they think an organisation with a $150 billion budget should still be using single book accounting.
Heh, it's good all that towel stuff, isn't it? Classic DNA, take a simple idea - isn't a towel really useful on the beach - and run with it all the way to absurdity without anyone noticing.
Gee, it'll be great to see all that again in the film... oh wait, they cut it all out.
This may not be an entirley bad sign as to your emotional stability.
For example, one of the things about Python that people always forget is that huge wodges of it are actually crap. Of course, other bits are sublime, os it is worthwhile.
BA is also tricky, series one is so very different from the others it should really be regarded as non-canon.
Two and Four are brilliant, and Three, while perhaps not so good, is underrated.
Hmm, almost a Trek-movie theory there. My theory, however, is that when Blackadder is sexy, the series is good. I think that is why BA2 caused such a stir, no-one had any idea that Rowan Atkinson could do sexy.
People who want to see Will Smith kicking robot ass will go to see it whatever you bloody call it.
People who love the work of Asimov will realise it is a perversion of all he stood for just by looking at the poster.
So, why bother licensing the book? What possible use did they get for their money?
Hell, if it had refrained from the corpse-raping I might have even gone to see it myself. I like to see people kicking a machine's ass occasionally, mostly when Outlook decides there isn't enough RAM in all the world for it.
I'm going to assume that this is for internal use, i.e. that you are not making actual product to send to customers. See note below as to why I make this assumption.
In which case, probably the best place to start is to download the SDKs for each device and look at them. do they suit your current dev tools? Can they work with your current compiler or IDE? What language are you planning to develop in?
Symbina and MS are probably a good focus to start on since they have the most variety of handsets and form factors.
(Note: because if they are real products for customers then the answer to your question is "whatever your bloody market is using you moron")
Wave goodbye to your car then... I give the UK 10 years, tops, before they try to put a transponder in every car.
It'll be for road charging - your road tax depends on how far you drive and where - but of course they'll use it for speeding tickets pretty soon afterwards, and the security services will have a back-door immediately, and then they'll let the police use it.
Tinfoil hat time for biglig, you think? Did you know that Mayor Ken Livingstone has publicly stated that if he ever canceled the congestion charge scheme (you pay £5 a day to drive a car in central london) he would keep the cameras that run the system around for police use? That he also anticipates an upgrade to mandatory transponders in that time period?
A dual core PC, runs linux, the linux uses one core solely to jun Windows, with wrappers round it that let it protect it from all the nastiness out there.
Say it with me:
"TCO > Cost of hardware and software."

Yes, but perhaps he prints off every item on that RSS feed and stores it under his floorboards.

Mod parent up as insightful. "If a geek can't figure it out, it's going to be a nightmare for the normal office user."

I remember you, you're the guy who just flew in from Norway. Are your arms still tired?
Ah-ha! Then since von Tetzchner is European, he must be an extraordinary immortal. That's why he's going to be able to survive the swim!
You're very kind, although the mods seem to be in two minds about it.
But should I have capitalized "slashdot"? I don't know, I just don't know....
I've seen the slashdot effect kill many a server over the years, but at last we take it to the next level. Hit that link enough, and a man will die!

Milligan's "Puckoon" (fiction) and Chapman's "Liar's Autobiography" (slightly non-fiction) are the only two to make me fall out of my chair laughing.
Curiously, there are probably more of DNA's jokes in these two books than there are in the new film...
Better hope you read lots of stories about how watching it gives people testicular cancer, then mate. That should lower your expectations enough.
However, these are poor examples. My vehement dislike of I, Robot and HHGTTG is not based on being a fanboy accuracy nazi.
It's just that I:
expect a film that claims to be "inspired by the writings of Asimov" not to have the hero deal with a robot problem by shooting them with a big gun.
expect a film that claims to be "inspired by the writings of Adams" to have some bloody jokes in it.

My favorite is one of the american attempts to do fawlty towers - the one where they left the Basil character out.
Say "Y windows" out loud. Good question, isn't it?
Mod the parent +0: Funny, but too subtle for the Slashdot crowd.

We're all part of the european superstate these days, anyhow. ;-(
Well, you can't troll by being factually correct. Or can you? On slashdot, much is possible.
Anyhow, the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" does, as the name suggests, include the top left bit of the island of Ireland.

Yes, no army would be evil enough to use slashdot trolls on their enemies...
From TFA, it appears they inherited this from BSD without noticing, have just noticed, and immediately disabled it.
