    actually, it would be interesting to compare athletes that have naturally greater than 20/20 (or 6/6 in metric) vision in shooting etc. their natural eyesight is better than a normal person, but is it a sufficient advantage?

    too much effort to tune the directionality of the prisms. best way would to have a repeating pattern of Quantum Dots receptive to a particular frequency, and then just pack as many on to the surface as possible. even though a given particle could only absorb a given frequency, the reflection off of the particles could cause radiation to disperse through the surface. this method is better as it's a) simpler and b) doesn't leave surface real estate taken up by crystals.

    Because reflectors can cause energy loss. better way to tune a semiconductor is using controlled dimensionality- use Quantum Dots.

    also reported by the ABC http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/05/08/2238461.htm on a personal note, a platypus is really interesting to watch in the wild. it's movement is quite lizardlike.

    Actually, the problem with that is that it assumes that everyone labels their music the same. Even with iTunes over a network, you can still see people label the same tracks differently. it also doesn't take in to account track quality

    The technique is similar to in line holography, in that the resultant image (a phase-contrast X-ray image)is constructed from the phase information of the light, as distinct from the intensity. phase contrast imaging is good for 'squishy' structures as it only needs a very small shift in refractive index to influence the phase, meaning that structures similar in density (ie, that would look similar on a conventional X-ray) can be produced.

    Actually, intense and high energy are not necessarily the same thing, especially in terms of radiation. intense means that the number of photons over an incident area is high, whilst high energy means that the photons are from the higher frequency end of the X-ray spectrum.

    From TFA, it appears these are single wall nanotubes, which are a lot more expensive and difficult to produce than multiple wall nanotubes. i'd be interested to see if these could pass through the mouse, as they are more reactive than the single walled variety

    Prey is an incredibly fanciful representation of nanotechnology. the situation described, as well as many of the properties attributed to nanomachines, is complete fiction. problem is, it's believeable to non-scientists. when talking about nanotechnolgy to non-scientists, I either get "what is that" or "you'll kill us all, grey goo." it's actually a damaging book, in that it actively attempts to hobble a science before it was anywhere near that level of complexity.

    SFX had an article a few months ago about ghostbusters. Apparently in the third film the ghostbusters would venture to hell- which was basically a ghost/demon inhabited manhattan.
