What is this "techie" label that you're throwing around? Do you have annoying labels for the lawyers, philosphers and judges too mentioned in your post? I have some news for you the lawyers, philosphers and judges are some of the "techies" that you're talking about.
This gets people all worked up but will never happen the way we imagine it. We are afraid that "they" can see into our minds and know all those dirty little secrets that we keep hidden away. If dreams are viewable then thoughts will be and if people saw what we are really thinking then our secrets would be out.
At one of my old jobs I had a similar situation but it was with an SMTP server. A network admin left without any notice and a short time later mail stopped flowing. I was called to find the machine. It was in a larger multiple story building with lots of layer 2 switches and crazy spaghetti wiring. It turned out to be a headless machine buried under a pile of papers and junk behind some desks where no one sat for years. Fun fun.
The admin probably made changes to the running config and overwrote the flash config so that when the routers were "reset" power cycled or whatever they could no longer route properly.
You can tell exactly where any network traffic is going to and coming from and the wireless equipment can be tracked to within a few feet using gps and other equipment.

I'm thinking it went something like this. The guy is a smug annoying sysadmin or someone has a friend or relative that needs a sysadmin job. They fire this guy without thinking it through and he just says he's not giving any information since he's fired, like passwords. This whole story sounds like revisionist hyperbole about a guy that was fired and isn't playing the game like he was expected to. So the cops and the execs now come down as hard as they can to cover their behinds and because it's exciting to ruin someone.

Basically immediate happiness. What happens after doesn't much matter outside of that there are immediate consequences along with some lasting consequences regarding people and things that I care about. Like my dogs for example. When I die whether they live or die is irrelevant aside from that I care about them so I plan for my demise and try to do well so that they eat yummy stuff and run in nice fields. A ms after I'm dead though nothing will ever matter again so pretending I'm of a certain religion to get some sort of perks works as well as stealing, etc.
I hope they don't count me in with their potential losses because as of about 4 years ago and forever more unless something drastic changes never will I buy a "legal" CD or DVD. I just am unwilling to give them any money ever. BTW for anyone thinking they would have a hard time giving up movies and such it really is very easy after a while and you don't miss them at all.
As I see it's not what employers are banning it's the way and the fact that thye do at all. If a person has clearly defined responsibiliites and they are living up to those responsibilites and not doing things that cause harm to the company like surfing porn which can bring law suites etc then leave the person alone to do the job they are hired to do. If they are not doing what they are being paid for then discipline and termination is in order. It's the bean counter and middle management tirants that care about this minutia and it's they who need to do something more productive than hover and lose sleep over surfing habits. Stop treating people like commodities and show some respect.
Yeah this is for sure going to work and not be a waste of time so since the Mexico bordner problem is solved we can move on to more inmportant things like making sure the gays don't marry.

If degrees are proof of intelligence does in not follow that he is smarter than you? Smart people are good to listen to. I wonder if he forgets his PhD?

Usually when people speak highly of our country's forefathers we speak of their insight, strength and resolve with regard to creating the best system of government to date. Their accomplishments are worthy of praise IMHO even if they had some imperfections. Baby - bathwater and all that.
Jeb Bush will be your next President and if he's anything like his brother then you can bet they don't want you to be able conceal your identity in any way so having your SSN or a national ID card will come to bare. Heck it might even be a national ID card with your SSN as the identifier.
The US isn't going to be attacking anyone new for a long time. We are out of money, our troops are worn out and stuck in Iraq and as far as Iran is concerned China and Russia would't allow us or Israel to disrupt the oil flow from Iran. Iran should just chill and do what they need to do. Iran dosen't need it own nukes, it has China and Russia to do the nuking for them.
Don't let these clowns get you down. It's easy to say in hind sight that this was a no brainer but I bet 99% of these geniuses would be scratching their heads and hi-fiving you at the time. IT support is a skill set and talent pool like any other. Some people are great some good and some should find other employment.
