I think 'hacking' is far more dependant on age rather than location. Linux seems to appeal to the younger crowd, both because of the appeal of FOSS, and the 1337 ability to tailor your system EXACTLY to your liking! I first entered the Linux community in high school, and back then Gentoo seemed like a good match for me. Sure, it took me several weeks to properly install it. (I did not know what I was doing, so at every attempt I started from scratch. I liked to start from stage one and bootstrap the compiler while I slept and then emerge the system while I went to school, so I could compile the kernel when I got home! Now that my studies have picked up a bit, I do not have the 'endless' amounts of time that I once had (but still enough to read the comments on several Slashdot stories per day), so I pick a more convenient distro. The only way I could currently afford a MacBook/Pro would be to use the Apple Student Loan, and another monthly bill would inconvenience me even more than setting-up Ubuntu would.
It isn't avoidable for your average home user who isn't going to try and figure out how to get all of his programs working with the limited user accounts.
Why do you fault Microsoft for the actions of incompetent third-party developers? Yes, Microsoft is partly to blame, since all consumer Windows operating systems (prior to late-2001) did not support file privileges; however, Windows XP was released nearly five years ago, so programmers should have learned better practices. Blaming Windows for the sloppy practices of third-party developers is like blaming Unix because Sendmail & Apache run by default as root (which they both used to do).
I guess that by "newbie" I mean me. I have 10 years Linux experience, and have just recently started to learn windows. I also find it illogical, and completely irrational.
I do not think you can say that all women enjoy working with other women. I have heard several female friends (and relatives) complain that some other women are 'catty'. My mother (a teacher) once told me that she prefers having a male boss (principal) because his moods are more static; with a female principal, she never knows if the female principle might be having a 'bad day'.
Mostly, The individual personalities of one's co-workers can influence a person's working environment far more than individual gender demographics.
Okay, one of the reasons you had to learn new commands with each new system is because you were changing operating systems. I am sure you realize that Linux is just a kernel, and it takes more than a kernel to make an "operating system" (well at least one that can be operated by a mere mortal). Slackware, Red Hat, Mandrake, et al. are different distributions of Linux (i.e. different bundles of software that run atop the Linux kernel) that are released by different groups with different agendas, so they will obviously be different! If you had stuck with the same distro throughout, you might have noticed fewer changes, or at least the changes might have been more gradual.

I love to see Plan 9 mentioned on Slashdot, but I would like an actual news story rather than a post that only says "Hey! This is a cool operating system that has already been mentioned on Slashdot several times since 1998! Check it out!" Plus, I have not yet seen a recent Slashdot story that said "Hey! There is this cool kernel called Linux, written by a Finnish programmer, Linus Torvalds. Check it out!" Which reminds me, I should submit a Slashdot story about Inferno.

Apparently, they compare the sales from the same months in previous years to disregard the impact of seasonal trends. Video games sales will always skyrocket from November to December, and then they will slump in January and February. There are probably some other trends as well, like video games sales may increase in June and July, because children will be out of school and have more time to play games.
Imagine a Beowulf cluster of ... oh wait!
Imagine a Beowulf cluster of them.
But what if you run out of hard drives?

Those above links seem to cover a lot of the 'evidence' for the Moon Hoax theories.

No, I think the best analogy would be "Watching scifi for the acting is like reading Slashdot for the blo.. er.. articles."

Yes, please. I love free lectures!
For gaming, the graphics card is FAR more important than the CPU. Speaking of which, I REALLY should upgrade my graphics card.
