From my limited experience with CompSci degrees (I am a Physics major), Computer Science is basically Applied Mathematics. A knowledge of algorithms, proofs, and a good helping of experience to understand the 'programmers mindset' are far more important than learning different languages. Nearly any problem can be solved with a Turing Complete language, so it hardly matters which one it is. In addition, most programmers will use the popular languages (like Java) in their jobs, so learning less popular languages (like Lisp and SmallTalk) will not be very helpful.

They claim their computers are built for doing creative things, but then the computer animation industry is run on PC's.

Most professional film editing stations are Macs. Many Flash Designers use Macs. Apple does bill Macs as great for creative work; does Windows ship with something like Garage Band or iWeb? Okay, there is MovieMaker.

Photoshop benchmarks better on PC's now since apple switched over to the intel chips.

That is probably because Adobe has (I think) not released Universal Binaries for most of its suites, so they are being run through Rosetta (PPC emulation).

And that whole dillusion about being ready right out of the box is crap. My macbook spent 2 hours just doing updates the first time I turned it on.

Updates took a long time for me as well; however, you do not have to automatically update the Mac at that moment, and a mac is much less likely to be 0wn3d by a worm/virus/WMF exploit/etc. than a Windows box.

Then their big red computers and ipod cash grab for AIDS campaign is just offensive. So if I buy a red computer for $1500 they'll give $5 to the world AIDS foundation... Whereas Bill Gates is giving billions of dollars he got from his inferior and fundimentally evil products to AIDS research right out of his own pocket.

Where? The only red thing that I saw in the Apple store was a red iPod nano, which cost $199, and Apple states that they will donate $10 to AIDS relief. Here is the math:

    10 / 200 = 1 / 20 = .05 * 100% = 5%

While 5% is not exactly a lionshare of the profits, it is much better than the .33% you claim. I will admit that Bill Gates is much more of a philanthropist than Steve Jobs; however, it is nice to see that Apple is trying to do SOMETHING.

I've tried linux but i'm a mechanic in life not a CS major I don't have the time to learn how to use it i just want it to work. If there was a windows clone I'd use it. I can't even fathom those who are techinically illiterate trying to use linux. Although I do believe my next machine will be a mac.

I got the impresion that he might actually be a n00b, so I took it upon myself to waste a few minutes and 'help' him. Hell, I was a total n00b (what is Unix?) when I installed my first Linux distro, Mandrake, so I thought he might ACTUALLY not know what 'flat ASCII textfile' refers to, and that *nix OSs do not place much emphasis on filename extensions.

the whole EU thing is starting to get a bit silly - the EU is not a country (and if it ever looks to become a federation in the way the US is blood will be spilled first(not because the US is bad but because I like my country just fine as it is)) and we don't all use the the Euro either. There are some aspects of law that are handled by the EU but on a whole it is still national law that is important, except for transnational issues within the EU area (and i have no objection to international law either)
You might want to take a look at the Wikipedia article on the Articles of Confederation to see how the U.S.A. progressed from a confederation to a republic. If you are a citizen in an EU member state and are opposed to unification, you might see some interesting (and scary) parallels.

Do you know what a readme file is, and you are speaking rhetorically, or do you not know what a readme file is but know that Slashdoters will consider you a dumbass for not knowing? If you ACTUALLY do not know, then let me enlighten you. A README file is a text file, that comes with many software packages, that contains information that the software authors want to convey to the user. README files usually contain a description of the program, credits, installation instructions, contact information, and any links where the user can find more information about the program. The traditional Readme file is a flat ASCII textfile, located in the main directory of the program, with the name "README"; often the readme file's name will have an extension (such as .txt or .html if the README file uses the HyperText Markup Language), but this is not traditional, since Unix does not place any importance on filename extensions.
