  1. To turn keyloggers useless on HSBC Online Banking Security Flaw Analyzed · · Score: 1

I recently accessed the Bank of Brazil's online system, and they have a pretty neat way to turn keyloggers useless: they use a Java Applet that displays the valid digits you can use in your password, and you actually have to click on each key in order to enter your password (if you don't see the numbers, click the contrast "+"). Keyboards do not work on the password field.

Most of the online banking sites in Brazil apply a similar technology, to prevent their account holders to fall victim of keyloggers, which was extremely high just a couple of months ago.

And besides the main site's password, each user has a secondary password that is used when performing financial transactions such as transfers, payments, etc.

Well, you all know how Sony treats its (ex-)customers, and calling them will get you nowhere. So instead of calling or emailing Sony, contact the US Department of Justice , and demand an action against Sony. They have never charged a big corporation with a computer crime, but I believe that Sony should be the first one, and let it set an example.

I'm in the market for a 400 CD changer and after much research, I had decided to buy the Sony CDP-CX455. Well, that was last month and fortunately I postponed the purchase another month. And today I'm ready to go with my previous second choice from Pioneer. I was seriously considering getting my wife a Vaio laptop on her birthday, Dec 1st. I'm in between Toshiba and HP now.

Sony and the others should begin to realize that they cannot treat their customers as criminals. They depend on us, not the other way around. The same people who bursted a vain in their forehead when they read about the rootkit are the same people who go out shopping for TVs, CD-Players, computers... To tell you the truth, I was happy with Sony products up until this huge pile of steaming crap surfaced, and let me tell you, they will never get another penny from me. Never.

"We also intend to re-examine all aspects of our content protection initiative to be sure that it continues to meet our goals of security and ease of consumer use," Sony BMG added.
I really can't believe this clown is saying that. Did they ever have a security goal in mind??? Does this statement mean that they continue to do business as usual???

I went back to their FAQs, and found a few interesting lines:

    - You must log on to your computer with Administrator rights or Power User rights to fully use the disc.
So I must be an admin just to listen to Ricky Martin??? Gimme a break.

    - To date, Apple has not been willing to cooperate with our protection vendors to make ripping to iTunes and to the iPod a simple experience.
And hopefully it'll stay that way for a long, long, long time...

    - the protection components are never installed without the consumer first accepting the End User License Agreement.
But nowhere in the EULA it is mentioned what the user is in fact installing.

    - If at some point you wish to remove the software from your machine simply contact customer service through this link. You will, though, be unable to use the disc on your computer once you uninstall the components.
Now this is another issue. Sony is marketing their discs as CDs, but their are not campatible with standard CD players??? They can't slap the CD logo anywhere they want and get away with it. They have to follow the standards, or call their DRM discs something else and anounce in big bold letters that such disc may not be playable in all devices.

Let's take advantage of this whole mess with Sony. Right now is the perfect time to create some awareness on the average Joe about the implications of DRM and how the insdustry is going way too far with it.

I read the FAQ's yesterday and the just added the following overnight:
    • 6. I have heard that the protection software is really malware/spyware. Could this be true?
    • How do I uninstall the software?
The uninstalling the doesn't say much, it just points us to a form that asks: Where you purchase the disc, Artist Name, Album Title, Store Name, Email Address. That's it. Now, let's say I want to uninstall this rootkit and I fill out the form. What will they do? Send me the instructions on the e-mail? From what Russinovich wrote, it's not a simple and easy task that the average user could do. So they have to send someone over to my house to uninstall this beast from my computer?

Couldn't Sony foresee the reaction on actual consumers: "I wanna buy this CD, but it has DRM (rootkit or not). Maybe it'll play on my car stereo maybe not. Maybe I'll be able to listen to it on my Discman (made by the same Sony), maybe not. Forget it, I'll get it online."

David Berlind has some interesting takes on the whole DRM issue.

About that free ride thing, Google is taking advantage of what MS have done so far. Sure enough MS pushed the home computer industry faster than anyone else and along with it came the broad Internet usage we see throughout the globe today. Unfortunately (for Microsoft) they're paying the price of being labeled (with good reason) a monopoly and their products as insecure and unstable. And flying, from the sky, came Google, creeping up on my IE and finally taking over my whole operating system. And I like that! I do! There's not one product the Google released that I didn't install. I trust them. They're managed and coded by people from the generation where Internet is a part of everyone's life. And that makes a BIG difference.

Microsoft helped dig its own grave.
