All the talk seems to be about feasability of public space travel. What I would like to know is this. Is Bezos really a billionaire? Who says? What do they base it on?
Doesn't Amazon have a retained deficit in their balance sheet? Are they still selling books or other items for a loss? If the answer is yes to all, then tell me how Bezos has a net worth of a real billion dollars? Is his salary that large at Amazon and he just saved most of it? After all, I believe reading in the Economist that Sandy Weill's salary was $250 mil. from Citicorp. Is Jeff getting paid that much? I'm really curious what his net worth is based on, and how he may have got it. Hey if there is some new way of making money, I'd like to know.
Now why would Google want Amazan. The company probably has one of the largest retained deficits in the world. It is and was amazing how many suckers Bozo got to invest in his company. Supposedly they are making a profit now; yeah 1c a share. I think Amazan is great to buy books from. After all they are selling most of their items below cost. Great for the customer. But as an investment? Forget it
No offense, but what you were not smart in doing was just calling your credit card company , and requesting they cancel GoDaddy's charge. After your explanation, hell would freeze over before they would pay GoDaddy and charge your credit card. Worked for me a couple of times with other venders trying the same scams.
The only thing wrong with the Monday notice idea is that they will blame all the subsequent screww ups on you. But then they would probably do that anyhow no matter which day you quit. Actually knew of a firm where they had what you call a Nazi who insisted his name be pronounced like Heil. Too bad his first name wasn't Sig. And no I never worked for that firm.
You dont. You are not dealing with gentle people. They are vicious. What happened to you is typical. Not too long ago, a firm I was with, I saw the same thing happen to someone. Like a gentleman he gave 2 weeks notice. He was gone in 1 hour. I wasnt even able to wish him well. One thing the the firm didnt like, was my comment that the intelligence level of the place went down 10% after he left.
Years ago when I worked for a another firm, I gave 2 weeks notice and they told me I couldn't legally quit. Guess they needed me. I dont think it is that way any more anywhere.
More recently when I left this large firm that was a screww up, I was going to leave in a couple of days. That was just enough for the CEO to hear about it and want to talk to me. Needless to say, the reasons for why I wanted to leave became very worried. Now do you understand why you were gone like skidmarks?

Man believe me, that happens at plenty of companies exactly like you described, and many times it's not about security issues, but things like having a normalized database of files.
Amazing isnt it, how it's always some big mouth vp or other company officier who doesnt know anything except how to flap his mouth and get conned by some fast talking salesman to buy some piece of junk software. Of course why bother asking the opinion of the IT guy or other professional. What the hell do we know?
I was once at a firm that paid big bucks in salary and perks. This retired military asshole that was a vp decides on his own to buy this junk software for the accounting department. It was hilarious if you weren't working there. First off, the software cost in the 6 figures, when for 30k max you could have done the whole thing with modules and top notch consultants from outside. Then there was the fact that the software wasn't even suited for the task that it was suppose to be bought for. Needless to say I got out because the basic plan was to make me the fall guy.
Gee, I wonder who took the hit for the foul up? I know they blamed this chicken excel jock who was a troublemaker for the reason I left. He was summarily terminated 2 weeks after I was gone to another firm. But I really wonder who took the fall for that junk software. It wasn't the military ass. Last time I heard he's still working there.
There's an old saying in the trade. Those who know dont talk, and those who talk usually dont know. Not trying to be insulting, but think about that next time one of these guys reveals "trade" secrets.
Newspapers and magazines already have moving images, even video streaming if they want to use it. It's called the internet. As the cyber culture evolves, paper media will become more of a thing of the past, or the same thing, totally unrecoginzable as it literally adoubts to cyber culture. I can see this new technology being quite prevelant in novels and other books. The expansion of the media experience will make the current version of books and other print literally antique. It will be McLuanns model of a merging of the old technique into the new, and something totally unrecognizable from the old. And with that a total paradigm change in how we view the world, hence think, therefore a new mindset.
Yeah, I think I sound kind of silly too. But sometimes I get these flashes. And dont ask me what kind of flashes.
Actually the start page looks pretty much like the google portal.
Say, could anyone please tell me if Boing Boing, Engadget, and Slickdeals are good sites. Saw them for first time on the msn start page. If they are old news forgive me. Sometimes because of work I have to be afk for few months. And that really sucks.
Also what is netvibes? Saw it mentioned in this post. Thanks
Thank you too for the reply. But I think if you want unwarrented legal mumbo jumbo stopped and the police to nail "Al Capones" for major crimes, you are just going to have to get competent judges and cops and prosecuters. The laws are there. They are not written for the crminals. And there have been good judges that wont put up with bs in their court, and they dont get overturned on appeal. Sadly competent people in our government are lacking today. Cops have told me that privately, and lawyers- well, if you dont have anything good to say about the judge, dont say anything.
Have a nice weekend.
Too bad you dislike legal mumbo jumbo. It's what protects us from being a police state. But then you seem to imply it is ok for the cops to use "legal technicalities" to convict someone they "deem" a criminal.
"A policeman's job is only easy in a police state"- the movie Touch of Evil
The RIAA is trying to maintain the status quo, what with Brittney Chan, this satillite bruhaha, etc.. Instead they should be adapting to the megashift changes occuring and figure a way how to make even more bucks out of it. It's like the Reformation in Europe in the 1500s, and the established orders trying to maintain their influence rather than realizing that printing by movable type 50 years ago changed everything. For printing today read internet.
IMHO some of their innovations have the purpose of restricting apps and OSs other than Microsoft. E.G., you cant completely defragment files in XP, so you can have a large empty area of file storage. MS gives it's reasons, which I think are b s. Is there a good reason why MS wont let you routinely completely defragment the hard drive? If there is please let me know.
That said, will admit some of their features work. Like the Windows firewall. Very minor problems, but overall it's a good program. Of course I am using this firewall on XP, and would assume on other OSs that another firewall would be a better choice.
When I bought a Dell this year, I requested dual booting so I could have Windows and Linux. -Yes sometimes Windows is better to use. I'm a realist on the OS not a fanatic. I dont like Windows anymore than the next intelligent person, but they have such a hammerlock on so much out there that sometimes it is more efficatious to use them, like for mmorgs.-
Anyhow, Dell said they did not support dual booting. The machine came with a Windows xp, and a lot junk an AOL hookup, MacAfee virus protec, etc.. It would really be nice if Dell would support some meaningful things like dual booting.
True story. Knew this family that is Morman. Had their kid, 14, go to Bible class every weekday at 6am. Church most all day Sunday. Do yard work Saturday. No internet, no cable TV.
That is the background. The result. This kid craved violent military wacko movies. Got magazines like Soldier of Fortune, etc..
My conclusion. He was bored. Oh incidentally his old man bought him a rifle and taught him how to shoot.
My point. Video games and the internet had nothing to do with this poor child's craving for excitement. And one way or another they will find it. If not gaming, maybe on the street? Oh, incidentally, last I heard this kid has turned out ok. Far as I know he hasnt killed anybody yet.
As for these organizations lobbying against "depraved" videos/games, wouldnt be surprised if they have only a few active members.
Sure the best of the year stuff comes out now. It is the Christmas season. And dont tell me that starts after Thanksgiving. And what better guide for Christmas then an "unbiased" rating of products. Remarkable coincidence?
Look it's simple. The year ends 12-31-05. 1/4 of the year is not over yet. So maybe the frist mag they get out after 05 is in 3-06. So what. How can you talk about the best products of 2005 when only 3/4 of the year is done. And your point about latency between story and publication only supports this point more so. Was the story done in August, or even July? Heck only half of the year is done if that is the case.
You're entiled to your opinion. But I kind of think the facts scream out for a different conclusion. But then that is only my opinion, though I think it has a lot more solid foundation.
2005 is not over yet. Or does PC world use the Julian calander?
You also have to wonder if any of these ratings have to do with advertising revenues. Sort of like product placement. Integrated or branded entertainment.
Know a guy near 60. Wont call him old because he doesnt act it. Good physical shape and quite hot with tech. You're only old if you want to act old.
What the hell is this article's gripe? Why doesnt this writer just get with it and enjoy the technology like cell phones.
This is unlike my great grandma that was 70 something when TV came out. Jesus, I guess she should have been overwhelmed and never watched a program. And when the first jet travel came out she was hotdoging every month from east coast to west coast to visit her sister. People recall her loving the new jet age.
Every older generation thinks the younger ones are punks. Doesnt sound like this writer exposes himself to young people to find out how smart a lot of them are. The barriors that exist, I think, are his own. Granted lot of generation x and y dont want to talk to people over 40. But that's because of all the spiessers they meet in that age group. Who wants to hear some old dummy reading the riot act at you, like NateTech.
And then there was my great grandma. Was she special, or has the US changed that much that the old folks have become more negative and closed minded.
I agree with your reply. Those subsidies and endowments were also the motivation for having them allow foreign students in the first place. Gee and now they are going to build Universities over there. Doesnt surprise me. It was always money. Take a look into why we have so many medical doctors from Asia now. Same scam.
The problem is the power elite in the US doesnt give a shit about people like you and me. The whole foreign thing in tech was to get cheap labor. Nowadays it is cheap labor in all jobs. Could go on about how disgusting the policies in this country are for pages. Feminist, racial stuff, religious bs, all of that is to take everyone's attention off the real policy issues in our country, like Americans getting a decent education and jobs. Divide and rule.
I'm lucky. They cant import labor for my job. At least not yet unless they are a screwup. And when in demand, oh baby they want you, but oh baby they dont want to pay a dime and want you to work 70 hours a week. See what you have to look forward to lol.
Keep the faith. Good luck.
Oh, well, gee, thanks for the input. Already knew the deal about East Indian students especially being slaves, but that was not the relavant topic of the posts. And yeah ding ding knew they didnt take attendance anywhere because they didnt give a shit.
The point of the posts was that science / engineering schools in the USA are a piece of crap. The operative word is "SCHOOLS". And these supposed "schools" still are a piece of crap and do everything to be discouraging and make someone want to flee from them.
If the Proffs think their sine quen non is research fine, go work where they only do research instead of their tenured welfore bullshit job.
I survived because science fascinates me.And I am not saying the schools should motivate students. But jesus dont demotivate them. Kerns whole description of Universities sounds way worse then my experience, but unfortunately is probably the overwhelming number of them.
And your comment about some of the foreign students, especially the Chinese, is just a little unfair. I am not a fan of what is going on, but some of the Chinese students were a material help to me. And quite frankly one I knew scored the highest ever on the qualifying elec engnr grad exam. Bet he still holds the record. And no I am not Chinese. Do you get it?
