  1. Re:Article summary on Why Students Are Leaving Engineering · · Score: 1

Take it you went and graduated from Purdue. So did I with a B.S.. And I can tell you my first response to this guys article was "OMG nothing has changed, except it is worse". My experience was better then Kern's, but I will say his description of the math department was dead on, at least when I went to Purdue, except for one math TA, who was a nice guy but not a teacher. And that is a shame because "mathematics is the lanuage of science", at least Gaileo's science and probalby all science eventually. I recieved one of the highest SET scores in the country and graduated from what was considered one of the best high schools. And that was before they dumbed down the tests. The problem with science in these Universities is that they do everything to discourage you from wanting to be in science. The textbooks are atrocious and quite frankly so is most of the teaching. The Proffs are usually worse. First year math proff was suppose to be genius at NASA. Never went to his lectures, which were about everything but the course. Two tests that counted for grades. Midterm was one problem the jerk thought up a half hour before the test, and then found out after the test there was no solution. Think that is funny? One girl had breakdown during test and they carried her out on a strecher. I got a 50% score, and my grade was a B. Some of science proffs at Purdue were good and they did care about students, and some of the grads TAs were nice guys, both native born Americans and quite frankly especially the foreign students. But in general the place could be sucked. And the social life, well I have no complaints but there were hell of a lot of socially dysfunctional people there and a lot of really messed up broads Hey did Kerns go to Purdue?

The definetion will change with changes in scientific instruments, which change with technology, and ultimately from science. Pluto was classified as a planet when discovered because the instruments used could find nothing larger in space at that distance. When the instruments became more detailed in thier findings, suddenly there were more objects then Pluto at that distance. Nature is seldom ever the black and white contrast that reductionist science likes to catergorize.

  3. Have Both on Yahoo! Mail Superior to Gmail ? · · Score: 1

Have both gmail and yahoo mail. Dont care what WM of WSJ thinks, but I will have to say Yahoo Mail is better. Gmail has a number of bugs, and yahoo mail has been problem free. But then, gmail is suppose to be in beta. Or is it no longer in beta? The bug in gmail that bugs me is when composing a letter all of a sudden the letter will disappear. This is solved by clicking gmail on the task bar and I get the letter again. Dont know what WM is talking about all these features on both email services. But then I havent looked into all the features of either of these services. When WM talks about Yahoo's new email, is he talking about the one that is free, or the one that is not? I use the free version, of course, but am not aware of any changes. But then I dont pay much attention to the Yahoo anouncements.

And how the hell would you know what this auto mechanic knew about black holes. If proffs only want to do research, then they should get a job where all they do is research. The problem is that when many, hopefully not most, do get full tenure, they become irrelevant kissoffs. I could go on but I dont want to waste time in a uselss argument with you. Your problem is you assume everybody is as dumb as you and the background you came from. Please dont go any further into this with me, or you are going find out how really nasty I can get.

Concerning two of your statements. You dont have to be at a college to discuss good books and intellectual matters. In fact, I would say that is the least rewarding venue. You'd be surprised how smart a lot of the ordinary pleblians are. For example, my first knowledge of black holes was from an auto mechanic who never finished high school. Second, why if the tuition is being paid at UW, should someone have to go chase after a proff or teacher to have them do their job, which is to teach? Learning from someone requires cooperation and willingness from both teacher and student. Never been at Reed, or heard about anyone's experience there, except for you of course. I believe that is a lady's college, isn't it? No need to tell me. I can find out. Well thank you for expressing your opinion.

Thank you for some well thought out comments. When I was speaking of Universities, I meant US universities. Perhaps your experience had to do with Europe or somewhere else. Or maybe you were lucky, and just found the exception that proves the rule in the US. I do not know about all American universities or colleges, but from the information I have recieved first or second hand, I can only conclude that most of them are a pathetic joke. As for good teachers, yes I am sure they are out there. In fact my high school experience was superlative. But then at the time it was considered one of the best schools in the country, and even the world. Many of the teachers had doctors degrees, they liked to teach, and they really knew their stuff. And they were fun. It was also really intense, with academic clubs after school. And I would disagree with you about learning on your own. If you really need a guide, I am sure their are curriculum outlines on the internet. But really all you have to do is go to a library. There are series like the Great Books of the Western World, etc., that will provide a decent humanities education, for example. Quite frankly in the US today, learning on your own is really the only alternative for many, maybe most Americans. Of course, that's assuming they really want an education and not some bs degree.

Universities are just a waste of time. Take it from one who's been there, graduated, and went to one of the more well-known / "prestigous" places. Focus on the degree helping you to provide a living. And what I mean by that is that many occupations / "professions" require certain degress or other college accredation. Get that qualification / accreditation, and forget the rest which is just stupid bs. Unfortunately this accredation / qualification requires a dgree and you'll have to put up with it. Even if the only reason is for a bunch of dumb proffs justifying their own existance. If you really want to learn, you'll do it on your own a lot better.
