I think Borders and some other large bookstore chains in some locations provide free WiFi
Even if a third party vender is providing the service, the place of business/location / store, etc., would still be libal.
As far as being free or not, really is anything free? Even you said the price of the beverages would have to go up. Seems like this would drive away some potentional customers that might not want to use wireless services.
Better in my opinion just to stick to quality services and food at a good price. I think that would generate the most business and profits.
Kevin Kelly also wrote a book called the New Economy. One of it's principle's was that profits don't matter anymore. That was before the dot com bust.
Actually I think his overall predictions in this article are quite prescient. The trend seems to be going toward internet based app's. Couple that with the recent $500 computers from South Asia, and I can see where everything might be done online with Linux and Unix operating systems, or something derived from them that is open source.
This might even be too big for Microsoft to spoil.
Have you ever worked for a large organization?
Cant give an opinion of Cisco's management, but obviously their damage control and solving the "issue" didn't work.
My unfortunate guess is that, like all large firms, they have people working there that are not qualified and dont know what they are doing. In other words stupid. And they usually cover their stupidity by duplicity.
Now dont go suing me Cisco. I'm not saying this is you. At least not necessarily.
Of course they should not censer or filter any web pages to their site. Sounds like this company is trying to act like US firms, which can get away with that under the current regime.
Essentially what this ISP did is commit theft. The people who paid for that web service have a right to all content on the web. If they dont want to read something, or see certain sites, they can filter it themselves , and that is their right. It is also my right if I want to read it.
Nice of you to care Nate. But what does "pick any band there are NO commercial radios available for them at any ham radio store" mean? I am not Harry Cohen watching the Lady from Shanghai, and I will not pay anybody $10k to explain it to me, but if someone besides you knows what you wrote, they are a smarter person than me Gunga Din.
Hint-read what I posted. It said I had some hams as good friends. And these guys really really know radio and tech. They also pretty much have the same opinion as me about a large segment of hams.
And what the hell is wrong with the 2M band? Just because you and I dont use it, does that mean something is wrong with people who do? That's what you seem to be implying to me. Man, now I am going to be polite, and just say it is better to pass over in silence that with which we can not recall without sorrow.
Give it a rest, Nate 88
FYI Nate never tried to talk with them. And none of them dislikes me. Could go to their field days, stupid meetings, and join the clubs.
Sorry if giving my opinion is rude to you. If you want me to really be rude, I can. But your overreaction is just the typical myopic stupid attitude that most of you deadheads have, and quite frankly you ruined ham radio which must have been nice at one time. Was that rude enough for you, lol?
Have a nice weekend. 73
The solution is simple. Pull all the plugs. And since when are you interupted by email unless YOU want to read it.
Sounds like this guy doesnt know how to organize his life.
Not sure what written means, unless it is essay questions which I doubt. So if still multiple choice, I dont see how anything has changed as far as the exam requirements
Back in 2003 went from tech licen to extra class in about 3 months, and took morse code. After meeting a lot of old hams where I live, never interested in getting on the radio
These guys are dinasaurs. A few are nice and I am friends with. But most resent the fact that I passed the tests so fast when it took some of these dummies ten years to do so.
They constantly harp on the fact that my cw test was nowhere as difficult as theirs. And that makes them more of an expert then me. When was the last time they used cw? They cant remember. CW manually is extinct except for fools over 60. Do most of these "hams" know anything about aprs or psk31, not to mention doing cw on computer? Sadly many dont.
Really sad. Amateur radio licensees use to be in the vanguard of science. Now they are like the flat world society.
In my state, Hawaii, the judges threw all those speed-check tickets out of court, and the stupid legislature repealed the law with all the public backlash. A democracy really at work.
If they are going to make time changes, why not put the whole world on UTC .
Seriously, back in the 1800s every locality, town, villiage, had it's own time. This wrecked havoc with coordinating train schedules, and a Canadian named Fleming proposed standard time, which became GMT, which the world still follows today.
Well technology has advanced, and with all the communications world wide over the internet and phone, it is becoming very cumbersome to know what time you are suppose to call or meet someone on the phone or net.
I know it is for me.
UTC will give the whole world one time. If I tell someone in Paris I am calling them at 3 and I live in LA, we will both be talking the same time with UTC. It will be 3 in LA and 3 in Paris.
OMG I only read your excerpts, which basically told me why waste time reading the article. If Bill is so unhappy about what's happening in the business, why doesnt he just change MS's policy. After all, they are the business, or have pretentions of being.
Is it me, or is this FCC chairman missing the point. He wants to do away with AOL , and by doing so create a duopoly in most areas. Will there then be a reg board to make sure consumers arent gauged? I doubt it. You want govt off the back of business, Mr Chairman, then allow for plenty of competion everywhere, like ten players. That way prices have a better chance of being fixed fairly.
You want only two players, or one player like Microsoft, that't why you need rigerous govt regulation to make sure the public isnt screwed over. Stuff like utilities, of which telephone services are, basically end up one firm operations. Hence the need for the govt to step in. Geez this country went through this 60-100 years ago. Dont you think they would have learned something? Maybe if another economic depression comes, they'll just do it all over again.
Have a yahoo email account and can tell you since they started their new email authentification, I get plenty of Spam. Furthermore some legitimate email hasn't gotten through. With AOL some email I send doesn't arrive and have to send again
If Microsoft succeeds in pushing their junk through , then it will make it that much easier for spamers. After all they have only one system to target. Diversity in products can make these creeps job difficult if not impossable.
Don't use Nortan or Mcaffee antiviral software but an open source free app.. Practically no viruses enter. And when they do it is my own fault and they are easily isolated. Reason is probably not only is the software good, but not that many people use it. Ergo some malacious creep isnt going to try and waste their time cracking it.
If large companies / corporations have so much trouble with systems breaking down and hackers, I have a simple solution. Hire competent people. Not some suckup, short skirt, or relative.
Part of the problem is that computers and their data contain information. Having someone smart handling this stuff, makes it more difficult to manipulate this data.
Then of course another problem is that somebody smart handling the IT will probably be more intellignet then the polically correct boob that hires them. And we should all know that no boss likes any worker smarter then them

You're right. Like your friend, same discrption w/o the piolet license, I am searched at every airport. Dont mind, really, puts me ahead of everyone and TSA are real nice. The TSA staff also think searching me is stupid.
But it does bother me that I am a suspected criminal. Nothing in background to indicate this, never been arrested or criminally charged.
Asked the TSA and a US Senator's staff why. Two years later am still waiting for the answer.
Does anyone know what requeue means?
I am not joking, I can not find a definetion for this word anywhere.

The book also appears to be self published. Which is either, I guess, good or bad depending on your point of view of the media business.
I wonder how the reviewer heard about it?
Gee. And I thought I was the only guy that had trouble reading Gibson's stuff.
Neal Stephenson's Cryptomacian is the same style. After reading 50 pages of that bombast, I couldn't take it anymore, even though I like cryptology. However, there is a hacker geek friend of mine, iq of a genius literally, who loves Cryptomacian. Personally I wish Stephenson would go back to something like Snow Crash.
jerry kaplan wrote a book years ago called I think Startup or something like that. Half the book was about his cat kritter and his marrying some blonde. The other half was about his downfall "supposedly" because of Microsoft.
I dont like Microsoft. But Kaplans flop with GO, and I am basing my conclusion on his own account, I think was mostly due to his lack of street smarts. According to his account, I recall, he could have sold out to IBM. Microsoft's hostility was obvious or at least should have been assumed. Hey, if you're going to dance with a giant, you got to know how not to get stepped on.
Also there was one other problem GO had. No beta product.
Is it only me, or does this guy sound like Microsoft? "We're working on it" "Wait a few months" "may not be the best...we'll see".
And then there's the "read the spec sheet" every three or four lines. Reminds me of that Slashdot reply about tech support in India and the constant chant "reinstall".
Can't say I read the spec sheet. But then this gismo is not for your convenience but the buyer's. Besides, nobody can understand most of those spec sheets, including the guy that wrote it.

That story was in Wired mag 2 weeks ago. One of the reasons I pay no attention to CNN.

The article is by Microsoft, the product AIM is by AOL. Judge for yourself whether it's worth it.
