I lived in Portland for about 9 months a few years ago. Had a job delivering food, actually.
The gas wasn't noticeably more expensive, and it sure was nice not having to get out of the car to fill up.
I believe New Jersey also has/had a similar policy of not allowing motorists to pump their own gas. It's my understanding that by requiring gas stations to provide at least one gas pump attendant, it keeps at least one person per station employed above and beyond what they would in any other state. Considering how many gas stations there are, that's a lot of unemployment averted. I never could tell where the extra cost for paying pump attendant wages came from...
couldn't you just program it to offload the old batteries into the charger, while putting the newly charged ones back in?
i suppose there's the issue of what happens when neither battery is in place, but could this short length of time be taken care of with capacitors? or some sort of 3 battery rotation thing...?
What about public companies who use Charter for email? Yes, if you want it done right, do it yourself. But weren't these paying customers of Charter? I'm guessing it's somewhere in the TOS, but wouldn't storage/backup be part of what one of their customers is paying for?
But my parents always seemed to be one or two steps behind when it came to technology of any kind. We only got an atari 2600 once all my friends had NES.
I guess the guy we got the 2600 from was some sort of electrical engineer or something. One of the games we got was pinball, and this guy had modded one controller to have left and right momentary on button switches. I soon figured out that these buttons were basically just hardwired into the left and right switches on the joystick. It didn't take long to use them for other games. Once, while playing Pac-man, I hit both of them at once. (This, in effect, was the same as moving the joystick to the left and the right simultaneously, something that's impossible with just the joystick.)
All of a sudden, Pac-man went left, through all the walls, and then got stuck in one of them. all the dots disappeared, and I moved to the next level. That led to me challenging my sister to games of Pac-man, as long as I got the pinball modded joystick.
There is a significant difference, though. In the case of this calendar, the cars in the pictures aren't in the calender because they're just because fords, but because they're fords that belong to club members.
IANAL, so I'm not sure the difference matters where it counts...
Wine is in the bible, and before people knew about waterborne nasties in water, the wine, beer, etc, was actually safer to drink than the publicly available water was.
Of course, this doesn't mean that the holy men (sorry ladies of slashdot...) brewed their wine and beer to get sloshed...or even knew how/that the brewing processes killed the nasties.
Sweet. I've always wanted to walk around in the third person.
even better, you could switch between several vantage points, much like just about every car racing video game i've seen in the last 10 years. just choose whether you want bird's eye view, medium view, in the driver's seat, on the hood of the car, etc...
Somewhat off topic, but a roommate of mine who was into buying high end photo equipment on ebay, and had a friend who got ripped off in a big way.
He found some equipment he was interested in buying, bid on it, or "buy it now"'ed it. He contacted the seller for payment info, since the price was around $10,000. The seller was anxious to ship the stuff, and got his ship to address, so he could get it out. The seller contacted him sometime before payment was sent, but after he had the ship to address (which happened to be his home address.)
About a week later, his house was broken into, and all his existing high end photo equipment was stolen.
Of course, the timing could be coincidental, but it's interesting that the auction was cancelled in such a way, once the seller had the address of someone who's buying high end photo equipment...what are the chances the buyer has more high end equipment lying around?
Not to be too cynical, but anytime I'm faced with trying to decide whether an online ad, auction, offer, etc, is legit or not, if the word "escrow" comes up, I'm all of a sudden less interested.
Why should I even get involved with a seller who's
a>in another country,
b>won't take paypal,
c>doing things very similar to what other known scammers are doing?
If everyone participated and kept to the 2 or 3 second rule, it wouldn't make more congestion, it would just slow traffic down en masse. you can fit as many cars on the road as geography will allow, but the speed you and the car in front of you are going with 2-3 seconds between changes as you get closer or farther away.
They did say duke nuke'em's coming...

The boy scouts sell popcorn.

...I actually trust Google with my email. I wouldn't mind them providing a proper backup mechanism...
There's always Google paper...

Maybe they are trying to get these to as many people as possible
Coming soon: The OEPC project...?
"...old paint thinner can..." ?!?
You mean, you wait 'til it's empty first?
Snob.
Actually, you're both sort of right.

You didn't actually RTFA, did you? This is slashdot, right?
I think the point is that with a Ponzi scheme, the bank doesn't get the bad reputation until people have put their money in.
what if you had a laptop in a carry-on bag?
I will assume you are using it to download things like movie trailers and free software.
oh, it's free software alright...ahem.

But then how will the grammar nazis compensate for never touching a woman?
"But then how will the grammar nazis compensate for never having touched a woman?"
Fixed that for ya...oh wait...
M And take my chances with the roving bands of anti-OSS ninjas? No thank you!
Methinks they'd be anti-OSS pirates, no?

I stand corrected. I missed/hadn't considered the GGP's "in a constrained amount of time" bit.
