I've got more downloaded music than most people I know. Most of it doesn't infringe on the RIAA by a long shot, owing to indie releases, obscure bands, etc. (Yeah, I'm one of those music fans.)

The whole "we only download it because it's crap" argument doesn't hold water for me. If it's so bad, then why are people downloading it in the first place?

Pardon the lame analogy, but if I own a pizza restaurant, and serve horrible pizzas, does that justify people stealing pizzas from me?

I don't believe for a second that if the RIAA/major labels dropped all of their craphole music all of a sudden, and picked up a wide variety of talented, interesting musicians, that the illegal downloading would stop. Is that really what you're saying?

The bot net would collapse, people profiting from it would stop and maybe people would start putting pressure on Microsoft to actually do something. Maybe even install a bootloader to display Apple, Ubuntu, & FreeBSD's websites.

One problem i see with this is that the proverbial grandmother, whose infected machine has slowed or stopped working altogether, then associates Apple, Ubuntu, and FreeBSD with the reason why her computer stopped working. To her, and thousands like her, their machine stopped working, and now the people (behind the curtain...) want her to stop using MS? They must be evil, if they'll shut down her computer to get her to use "their" products.

Yeah, yeah. There are places on the Autobahn that have no posted speed limit. But the thing most people who've never been to Germany don't realize is that if you're going over 100 kph (about 60 mph), and you're in an accident--even if it's clearly, backed-up-by-solid-evidence not your fault-- then your insurance company will not cover damages, and the state/city can find you responsible.

I checked this out a while ago. My sister spent some time locked up, and I wanted to be able to receive collect calls from her. She tried calling my cell number a few times, but was told the number wouldn't accept them. I never got a call. I called T-Mobile to "activate" a collect call um...authorization/ability/whatever, and was informed that I couldn't accept collect calls on my phone. Even if I wanted to. The CSR told me they didn't have the ability to allow it, due to customers denying collect call charges once they appeared on the bill. I couldn't tell if it was just a policy to turn collect call receiving off to begin with, and with a little pushing they'd allow them, but after 30 minutes of going up their chain of command, and no different answer, I gave up.

I'm sure someone else here knows more about this than me (or the not-so-helpful T-Mobile CSR's.)

That's the thing. Without teachers, sanitation workers, or several other key-to-functioning roles in our society, things quickly break down when they go on strike. With tv, there's some grumbling, and perhaps those in Hollywood who are seeking more will get what they want, but if they push too far, the public will look to other forms of keeping busy if the strike goes on for too too long. It's sort of a double edged sword, right? The writers know they have something the public wants, but they don't have something that the public needs. If they (were to have) dragged out the strike too long, the public would see the difference between what they want and what they need. Then when the realization hits, they don't care about the writers, since they've been written off, no pun intended...

89% of those that responded (pool of ~350) wanted no communication other than direct mail -- that was shocking to me, especially because they were traditional aged students (18 - 24). I have found that most students will give you their name and address (which is more than I normally will give anyone until I actually apply to the college) and not much else (no birthdate, prior education, and especially no phone number or e-mail address).

I'm 31, and much more likely to give out my home address than an email address, for something like a school or job, for the simple reason that if you have something you're going to send me that's of value, then you'll send it via snail mail. Think about the costs associated with mailing 5,000 to 5 million pieces of snail mail, versus the same number of items via email. Which are you going to think about and more carefully consider before sending to me?
