For really bright lights, a small square of aluminum foil works well, and is absolutely opaque.
this (in hat form) also works wonders to keep the secret reptilian-government streetlight cameras from reading my thoughts...but don't tell them i said so.
i'm a fairly well travelled american (lived in 3 countries, been to over 20) and i am the last one to try and find out if the locals speak english so i don't have to learn their language.
i'm wondering where you're from that you think you'll probably never see an american nickel.
I could see it being useful when looking at a place to live. It would have to be pretty specific, but it's hard to tell looking at a map how far away train tracks/airport/freeways need to be in order not to hear them.
the music store was on a military base overseas, so the rules were a little different. i'm not sure whether we could have or not, but i wouldn't be surprised if we could have legally held them.
i didn't care too much anyway, that damn alarm system sucked and would go off at the drop of a hat. sometimes it went off when no one was coming or going. most of the cashiers then didn't bother looking up from what they were doing then either.
you mean when they look up to see who's set the alarm off while walking IN the store? and then they go back about their business...only to do the same when the same person sets the alarm off on their way out the door.
i used to work at a music store, and people would set the thing off all the time coming in with packages from other stores, cell phones, who knows what. every time it happened, i thought that if one could deliberately set the thing off on the way in, you'd basically get a "it's ok, he set it off on the way in" nod through on the way out, while you're loaded with goods.
we never checked, and the casheirs at stores now don't check.
i set the alarm off--on the way in and on the way out--at a home depot store this weekend. got no looks either time, and the people by the exit were about 100 yards from the entrance, so they couldn't have known about my loud entry. all this while wearing a messenger bag loaded with stuff from other stores.
I think it wouldn't necessarily be so bad if we could all take content--in this example, we'll use a movie--and re-edit it. If you're not familiar with the concept, google "film recuts", and check some of them out. People take a popular movie, and take clips from it to make a new trailer so that the film seems from a different genre than it is. The shining becomes a happy father/son comedy, back to the future becomes a love story between the doc and marty, etc.
What if we could do that with entire movies? create alternate endings, mashups of various movies, with similar characters/actors taking part. I think collage is a wonderful way to create stuff. Negativland was made famous for their work with this medium, and they have some interesting things to say about copyright/sampling/plagiarism.
In the end (for now, anyway), I guess it all comes down to "wouldn't it be cool if...".
Somewhat off topic in regards to this story, but not this thread.
Most of us have seen arguments for or against releasing/loosening/shortening copyrights, and I tend to think that's a good thing. What I don't think I ever considered is what effect that would have on popular culture.
i'm not even talking about the kind of piracy that abounds now, outright copying and having of unpaid for works.
I mean in terms of artwork, games, spoofs, music, etc. I think if all of a sudden, works from 10-20 or even 50 years ago were suddenly fair game to do with what we please, there would be an explosion of creativity.
I'm an armchair engineer, you insensitive clod!

Well, seeing as "exhaust" typically means waste product, and most of what the RIAA puts out falls under the same definition, it should be easy, no?
If you know how it's built, it'll be easier to poke holes in it, no?
does anyone else have the issue of the tape deck's auto-reverse "feature" constantly trying to switch sides of the "tape"? any solutions?

Sort of like time shifting, but you get to watch it before it's released...
