Some of the most outlandish and theoretical research have resulted in insights and technology that have helped mankind take a small step forward. A research project might, for example, require the development of better instruments, that can turn out to be of immense value in other domains and help other scientists answer seemingly unrelated but important questions. Also, don't forget that grants and resources are allocated by people far more capable of determining the usefulness of research projects than I or you are.
Blogs "articles" such as this one make me cringe. Talk about fanboys taking their obsession far to serious. I mean, a Gartner report is the last thing that's going to stop the iPhone from being a massive success. Furthermore, so what if Engadget and Gizmondo have slightly negative writing on the iPhone, that's just 2 out of 3.1415 googol blogs and sites which are giving the phone great marketing for free.
Very nice news but somehow not surprising by the constant underdog. It truly is a shame that Opera only has 2% of the market considering how great it is in comparison to its competitors regarding speed, features, innovation and security. Imagine a browser so great that people actually paid for it as late as 2005 (these days, Opera is 100% free).
Now that China is rapidly transforming into a market economy, what Marxism is there to speak of? Or maybe the good chairman wishes to enlighted the Chinese youth of the crimes of communism in China and atrocities committed by his predecessors? It would be a great lesson in how a fundamentally flawed ideology can retard a nation with great potential for decades and decades.
the next Windows iteration will be coming a brief two and a half years after Vista's launch.
Is this another impossible deadline by MS? Or maybe this will be a service pack and not a major WIndows update? Anyways, 2.5 is too early for the next version of Windows when Vista will probably take 1-2 years before the major shortcomings are fixed.

For any well run IT project, programmers don't directly have to do user related tasks. That is the job of the interaction designers, GUI designers, usability experts, etc. Seriously, why is the notation of programmers doing everything from analysis and design to documentation and coding still alive? IT projects ARE very complex and require experts from many disciplines in order to become successful.
Any competent web developer should know how to use the The Robots Exclusion Protocol to prevent crawlers from crawling/indexing a web site. Why News Sites do not want to be visited by Google is really beyond me - it is free advertising! Visitors still have to visit the news sites if they want to read anything but a short article summary.
I have been pleasently surprised by Drupal. It is very easy to manage and extend, you get tons of functionality by using well developed modules, customizing its themes is easy and it has great i18n support. Drupal lately seems to have become the favorite open source CMS on the market and thereby increasing the number of developers working on it and people who can help you out.
Cinematics are bad when they "play" parts of the game for you. E.g. you are _shown_ how you save the world, instead of acctually doing it. Cinematics should be keept to a minimum, letting players play the game. Otherwise, games risk loosing the things that seperates them from plain old movies: game play, interactivity and the freedom to (well, sort of) create your own stories.

Excellent point. Mod parent up, mods!
And somehow, these people manage to keep secrets about aliens, JFK, weapon programs, etc.? ;)
Or they could just call it GIMPshop....
Yeah, save some iPhone for the dupes! WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE DUPES!!!

Right. Opera has been completely free since 2005.

Will id's new engine support bleeding edge features such as brightness? *ducks*
Because you cannot just give the damn books away, right? Heck, recycling the books at part of a PR stunt would be better than burning them.

... ask yourself: what would my opinion be if the article was about, say, Microsoft?
