    ...and decided relatively late in the game to become teachers, because they weren't really qualified to do much else.

    Or they were a lost kid who didn't know what to do with their life and decided that teaching (9 mos. a year) was a nice compromise to actually working.

    I'm sorry, but I don't think teachers are underparid for what they do - contrary to what the PR that the teachers unions put out. Don't beleive me? Just look at my grammer and spewllign!

    Unfortunately, that's not the reality. A friend of mine graduated with a teaching degree in Chemistry. She got a job teaching high school. She was laid-off after a year (her contract wasn't renewed). Why? Because of budget cuts. Football and baseball programs get the money these days instead of music or science.

    This is just a transition period between old technology and new. I'm comparing what happened during the initial years of home video recording and audio cassette recorders - at first content publishers were bent out of shape then they realized that they can make even MORE money with the new technology. It'll work out eventually. Also, these times will be used as yet another example for the next time some organization like the RIAA gets bent out of shape over some new technology that allows consumers to copy a copyrighted product.

    That's going to make a lot of noise, which Apple can cheaply ride on the back of. Imagine, loads of mainstream publications will cover Vista, and if Apple launches at the same time they'll surely do comparisons

    Interesting. I'd be afraid that OSX/INtell will get lost in the noise. But then again, this is Steve Jobs we're talking about.

    Money addicts! They can never get enough money to spend. When my local Congresscritter brags about the Federal Money he's brought to our district, I just think to myself "It doesn't impress me becuase that's our tax money! What a dipshit!"

    how many new materials, technologies ect have been largely ancillary to the ultimate goal (or even developed without a goal in mind), NASA, DARPA, and similar organizations don't exist to be financialy viable in and of themselves, they exist to reach beyond what we are capable of now, and make it possible.

    I completely agree! I used to get the "NASA Tech Briefs", so I know the technology that they produce. BUT, in our current fiscal state, I think it's completely irresponsible to be spending that kind of money right now, maybe later, but not now. :-)

    ... I am mildly hopeful about the fact that so many people are pissed at the republicans over the Katrina screwup right now.

    I was about to defend the Republicans in the interest of fairness until I remembered that they've been in control of the Legislative and Executive branches of the US Government for the last few years. So, I guess it is their fault. I'll shutup now.

    With Bush set to drop $200 billion on Katrina, finding money for going to the moon is going to be difficult

    Also include: Iraq and Afganistan wars, Tax Cuts, High Oil prices, huge budget deficits, huge trade deficits, etc ...

    The US needs a financial planner or at least a debt councilor.

    I love space exploration. I grew up wanting to be an astronaut. But I just don't see the justification for this at this time. A good distraction, I guess.

    Microsoft almost got it right with XP, but then they got greedy/stupid at the last minute and fragmented the product line (first Pro v Home, then Media).

    What I'm really worried about is that features that I want will be mutually exclusive between versions. In other words, I'll be forced buy the "Ultra" or "Ultimate" or whatever version to get what I need. Then again, it may just to confuse the consumer. I know a few people who bought XP Pro even though they just use their computers to surf the web and write letters. No VPN or anything like that.
