You could ask the same question about CD technology, plasma TV, the computer. Alot of technology we have today was developed 20/30/40 years ago, the problem is that that its not profitable or easy to manufacture, develop, and sell these technologies.
This applies to the touch screen table tops and such. We had this technology for a while but its just now were the price to sell the product and the price to produce for the product is in reach of both huge corporations and smaller companies.
For the past thirty years most fast food stores were using the stander hierarchy register machine, green display, you pressed a keypad that added an item and it was top to bottom, very difficult to go back to the top of the list to modify a mistake. Now you go to Mcdonalds, they have touch screen displays, they display the image of the food(Big Mac), you press the items they want or do not want(lettuce, ketchup, mustard), and there is the order and if you need to correct a mistake you can easily click an item and fix the mistake.
Could they have had these type of registers earlier? Yeah, but they weren't cost effective till about 2000 when I believe they started to slowly replace the older registers with these registers.
The point is, the technology is there, its just a matter of making it cheap enough and affordable for companies and people to develop it and buy it.
The day I have a table the size of my kitchen table that can support six people playing an RTS, all through touch screens, none of that voice crap that ive seen on youtube, and were yelling off commands and tactics to each other against six other people in another room, will be the day I crap my pants.
This happens with Comcast in my area outside of Chicago. My connection runs fine without running any torrents. If I turn on my torrent all hell breaks lose, and I only run one torrent download/upload at a time. My connection will drop every 5-10 minutes, severing my internet access. It will return by itself in 2-3 minutes or if I restart the modem.
My torrent settings are standard, encryption with max 50 simultaneous connections a time on a single torrent. I actually used to be able to put 75 but recently Ive been dropping this below 50 to see if it improves stability which it hasn't.
I never had any problems up until about 6-12 months ago. I don't have any alternatives other then going with SBC DSL. I have a feeling they knock my connection out to try and stop my torrent, thinking if they cut the connection for a few minutes then restore it later, my torrent wont resume back to its normal state.
Google will just acquire some other company that already developed all these new Blog features and then just implement them into their own. Same goes with the Captcha security issue.
I love stories like this. I used to go to Goodwill stores and browse their selection of old computers they would take in(they don't sell old computers anymore I think). I came across an old Macintosh and it wasn't that it was a Macintosh that caught my eye. It was a "black" model Macintosh, I had never seen a black Macintosh before. I paid $10 for this thing, brought it home, worked perfectly fine. I later find out this is a Macintosh TV, a computer that only saw a life span of around 6-12 months, featured one of the first TV tuner cards, it was the first Apple product to come in black and only 10,000 were ever produced.
I actually live 30 minutes outside of Chicago in the Joliet area. It was definitely one of those "WTF" moments, you didn't think earthquake because most of them out here go unnoticed and it was such a gentle rocking back and forth. There have been several aftershocks since the first one early in the morning. My roommate said around 11pm central time there was nice aftershock.
PS, I honestly thought there was a monster under my bed last night during the initial shake.
"ISPs need to start billing for usage, that much is obvious"
They used to bill for usage = hours/minutes. I would have bills as large as $150 a month, now I pay $40 for "unlimited". That $150 a month was for I think 200 hours of usage. So thats 75cents an hour. Expensive? Yes. Alternatives? No. Thats all I could get at the time. Oh, also tap on the extra phone line, plus the local vs non-local calls.
So instead of hours/minutes, they will charge us by the gigabyte? This works in the hosting business because some people can predict the usage they get a month, but they also sell "unlimited" services also.
Where I live now you can either get SBC DSL or Comcast Cable. Comcast is considered unlimited for the most part and it does most people just fine. But why should I pay differently because they cant keep up their side of the burden?
My major concern would be with swapping USB flash drives between machines from home and work and such. Might as well have the defense up if it doesn't interfere with what you do.
I wrote this but first, I don't know what I was thinking.
"Why wouldn't you? Cause the risk is low? Thats like having sex with a girl and not wearing a condom cause the risk is low of catching something. You might as well put the extra layer of protection just as some sort of defense just to be on the safe side."
The Comedy Central version was just pathetic. At first it started off talking about the robots, but slowly turned into a joke. I blame both the contestants and Comedy Central. I blame Comedy Central for taking the show and taking away the nerdy aspects and instead focusing on marketing the show to more people and they did a pretty bad job at that with my next reason.
I blame the contestants for not letting their robots get smashed to bits. Most battles ended with the winner giving pity to the other contestant. Only a few battles featured the other robot getting destroyed. I wanted to see the robots fight to the death. Its like the money shot of the show. They first discuss the robot and how it works, all the aspects behind building it, etc. Then they go at it. I know alot of hardwork go into building these but seriously, when you put your machine in a arena full of dangerous obstacles and a competing robot, do you expect it to come out peacefully.
The majority of battles ended with a robot malfunctioning on the first blow and then if it didn't work after 30-60 seconds they ended the round.
Teachers might not be any better. My brother yesterday was teaching a middle school class as a substitute, one of the students made a smart ass comment about the NIU attacks. My brother instead of over reacting simply told him that his statement was in bad-taste.
The student himself is a good student, he has no issues, he just said something that is out of line. Yet my brother got yelled at for not reporting him to the office. You know what would've happened to the kid if the other teacher reported it? One stupid statement and one slip up and this kid is sent to the principle, then a counselor is brought in, then psychiatric help, and his parents are called in. For one little slip up the kid is attacked from all angles as the bad guy. Nothing is really solved and the kid learned nothing about what he said, hes just told not to say statements like that anymore.
Back in 1995-96 I was still in grade school, one of my classmates had a pocket knife on her key chain. When our teacher saw it, she told her not to bring it back to school and to remove it. Today if that happens, a school police officer is notified, the kid is detained, and finally expelled from school for a week. So instead of a kid spending a week in class learning, the kid is at home sleeping and watching tv.
The thing is, you cant just hire new teachers. You need to hire competent teachers to teach the children and to shape them into good people. You ask me who has had the most influence in my life and I name my dad and then teachers, coaches, and professors. Not Michael Jordan, or Rappers, or anyone like that, I name people who have directly influenced me.
Teachers (and no, I don't mean all of them) don't look out for the better good of the student anymore, they look out for their own job. And we wonder why the education system is failing.
DVD sales might be down but does that account for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sales also? Or are those in their own category?
DVD sales should be down considering the change in technology services for the consumer over the past year, moving on from DVD to BR/HDDVD(still counts) and in-demand services which includes Netflix, Comcast, etc.
I dont quite understand the strategy of the RIAA, is this even a profitable strategy. You first need to collect evidence, then you need to file the lawsuit, and finally the defendant has to pay, that is if he or she is found in guilt. So now you to pay for the collection of evidence, then the lawyers, and then you have to hope the defendant has money to pay you to recoup the loss.
So I guess they have internal lawyers but as the cases grow in numbers you need to hire out law firms which is not cheap. I don't know who they pay to collect the evidence, or to tell if someone is infringing but they have to monitor the P2P networks and I guess the torrents.
So by the end of the case lets say the defendant is given a infringement cost of $10,000 or something. They still have to pay it up.
What person in their right mind thought this was a good plan. Theres so many parties to deal with, so much time that needs to paid for. In the end all I see happening is a loss plus tarnishing the name of the RIAA. Hell, if the defendant wins then the RIAA might have to pay them. This seems like a strategy proposed from old-school business into a new-business world.
Doing something different from what you are used to is ALWAYS more difficult. Get over it.
Lets say I want to switch over to Linux because its more secure. Now lets also say I work with Photoshop and other professional digital art packages. Now your saying that my switch will be more difficult cause switching is always difficult. To get software that is not officially supported on Linux to work is a "bitch" to do and Photoshop is one of those programs, and don't say use GIMP cause it has a serious handicap of not supporting CMYK.
The thing is that we can get everything working on Linux you can on Windows most of the time or you can find a equivalent open source software package. The problem is that it takes a ton of time to get Linux setup, running, and working perfectly. I would rather spend two hours securing Windows then several hours working on my Linux "Rube Goldberg" project that might or might not suite my needs.
I had the honor of enjoying my first experience by not even playing the game. My brother came home from his friends house and talked about this, "Jones in the Fast Lane". He said something along the lines of, "this guy went a baseball game and threw up hot dogs". Now I was only five or six at the time but at that point the journey was on to meet this "Jones" guy, and the story goes and I find out he was a video game character. Then Wolfenstein came around and badda bing badda boom.
My friend asked me how he could lose weight. Hes over 300 pounds an hes only 21, I told him he needs to make some lifestyle changes. For one I told him to play less WoW and start being more active, of course he didn't want to give up his precious WoW over his health. Now whenever I go over to his house, hes sitting there playing WoW with a bag of potato chips.
Its not completely video games fault but its definitely a key contributor and it doesn't help that its contributing to the problem at an early age. And to those that say they grew up playing video games and their still healthy, that can happen, if you watch Super Size Me theres a man in that film that ate over 10,000 big macs in his life time and looks completely fine. Some people can get away with it, but the majority cant.
When it comes down to it. Theres two key factors, lifestyle and respect. You cant expect the problem to go away with changing your lifestyle and learning to respect your body.
You sign this agreement with your parents. The high school I went to, it was mandatory for you and a legal guardian to be present and you both signed the documents. Call foul on me, I dear you to, cause almost every high school in the United States does this.
I see alot of comments of people saying, "What right do they have to do this, shouldn't it be the police?."
Yes and No, if the police caught them in the act then it can be put in the hands of the police, otherwise these kids are lucky they didn't get caught by the police and the school is taking disciplinary action. Remember, these kids signed papers that said they would not drink and thats in and out of school activities and hours. Some schools even have a 24 hour rule, if you get caught and within 24 hours you turn yourselves in then you get the minimum punishment, and maybe even get no punishment for the first offense.
That signed paper is a way for the school to protect both the student and the school. Without that paper the school wouldn't be able to help the student and would have to turn their heads. Some schools do care about their students though and this is a means of caring for the student.
I will say, the privacy settings are a must. Have the privacy settings turned on but its not a 100% guarantee. All it takes is one of your friends accounts to have their privacy settings disabled and they have a picture of you tagged.
Its simple, you get caught drinking in any means then you deserve the punishment.
Now if they cant prove that there is alcohol in your drink, then more power to you, but you got off easy this time.
These kids are in high school, wait till they get to college and some of them join the athletic programs. They will spend several hours in NCAA compliance meetings, signing papers, and reviewing every single detail about drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and felony's. Trust me, I got busted for alcohol and they didn't even have pictures of me drinking. Now this only applies to athletes but other programs do have similar measures to protect the image of the school.
Additionally, you sign your life and image over to the school and NCAA, which means if your a stellar athlete then they can use your picture and likeness to promote the school or sport. The pressure to be more protective about what you do and what is seen increases. These kids are getting a lesson about privacy and being mature. I knew of one great athlete in college, a good friend who could break 4:00 in the mile, he didn't get facebook till the day he was done competing cause of all the athletes around him who got in trouble.

Why are you being modded funny? This should go under informative or at the least interesting.
I never thought that a video about a weapon that fires floppies would start off talking about abortions.

Well you finally solved it...
1. Create Paranoia on Slashdot
2. Make and Sell Tinfoil Hats
3. Profit

Most school boards are comprised of individuals who were once former teachers and might still be teachers.
Teachers might not be any better. My brother yesterday was teaching a middle school class as a substitute, one of the students made a smart ass comment about the NIU attacks. My brother instead of over reacting simply told him that his statement was in bad-taste.

Maybe they should read up on Joseph McCarthy and see how instilling fear into people worked out for him.
