Which market is better to exploit / market fear? A young, highly educated market or a older less-educated market?

As for the act, The Daily Show showed 2 clips, one from his CNN show and one from his FOX NEWS show, they were separated by about 18 months. On CNN he was saying the USA had the worst health care system in the world, but 18 months later he is on FOX NEWS saying its the best health care system in the world. So somehow the USA went from the worst to the best in 18 months with no legislation, reform, or any anything.

Even if that number increased their would still be chance of being caught. This is the same thing with the RIAA lawsuits. They couldn't sue everyone but they could sue enough people into scaring the common folk into using legitimate services. This would scare some to not even chance it because they could get caught. Now the difference is that some of these people are savvy enough to find ways to prevent themselves from being caught. Just like with the RIAA, those savvy enough could find alternate sources to those that were actively being monitored but to the non-technical savvy they had to go to legitimate sources.

Comparing today and 30 years ago is like comparing apples to oranges.

I will assume you are talking about DRM on old computer software back when the home computer was not in everyone's home and those who owned them were those that were interested. The harder forms of DRM died because the market was very small and anyone who owned a computer discussed these issues with each other. Also it didn't really die it just wasn't as restrictive and abusive, for example looking up a code in the manual of your legally purchased game.

The problem today with the PS3 or Xbox is that EVERYONE owns them and the market is huge, its not longer "geeks and nerds" who own the hardware, pretty much everyone does. So for the 100 of us on Slashdot that say we wont buy into it, there are 5000 other people who just don't give a damn or have no clue what DRM is and if you explained it to them they still wouldnt care.

Starting with Doom back in late 94 early 95, I must have spent hours playing it and going over every square inch of the maps. By the time Duke and Quake arrived there was always those discussion among the older kids of which was better. I never understood why Quake was better, no one in the neighborhood was online back then nor could do multiplayer of any form. Between Quake and Duke, the Duke had attitude, character, some depth you felt like you were playing as someone awesome. Quake though was just a man who would grunt every so often, not much different from Doom 2. As for the graphics, sure Quake was 3D in both objects and map but this was early primitive 3D. A decent art team making sprites could outshine 3D graphics back then.

The Duke will always be King.

They found a security hole in the system and instead of just reporting it to AT&T they pulled down private information which they did NOT have the right to access. In other words I left my front door unlocked, this doesn't give you the right to go in and snoop around and take my stuff, you CAN however report to me and the newspaper that my door is unlocked. That is why these "hackers" are in trouble. AT&T probably looked at the exploit and then realized not only was there a problem but the people reporting it took private and sensitive information, this then required them to go to the legal system because their liable for this. Most of these major companies have insurance to cover these types of incidents but unless they follow protocol the insurance might not pay out.

It really is a shame what Facebook has become. I joined back in 2005 when you had to register your account to a university with a university email address. Not many people had it, it felt like a unique little club that only a limited number of people could get into. The security was better in the sense that you had almost full control over anything anyone could see.

But now anyone can have a FB page from your grandmother to a company, it lost that unique feeling of being part of a club that was closed to outsiders.

I sanitized my account about 2 years ago with fake information except for my name and two photos. When they released the ability to backup your account I tried it and to my surprise all that was left was my sanitized information. Could old photos and posts be in their system? Yeah, but nothing that could really be used against me, although others that just posted whatever they wanted will not fair so well.

These three towns were voting to build a municipal network and let me tell you the week before voting the amount negative ads running against it were crazy. It failed in vote but had every household that agreed to it bought it into it would have paid itself off in 5 years.

No it was the visuals. There was no plot to Doom except what the manual stated on the first page. The game was simply the best looking game on the market and you ran around shooting monsters, that was it. You know what game came out 7 days before Doom that had a plot but more cartoonist style graphics? Blake Stone from Apogee and it was destroyed by Doom. Even when Doom 2 came out it was still the same game but with about 10 new enemies and one new gun but it was still the best looking game out there.

What happened with FPS games is that Half-Life came out. Not only did we have a beautiful game for its time but we had a plot, we had a character with a background, we had a setting that had a story behind it, we had a common foe to the main character, we had interaction with characters. All these elements were around but Half-Life put them together into a nice package. Half-Life changed what the FPS market was, as consumers we expected both good graphics and a great story that pulls us a long after Half-Life showed us it was possible. Doom survived because we didn't expect the great story, we had a game that looked light years ahead of the competition. Go forward 5 years and everyone has good looking graphics, but not everyone had a great plot to go along with these stories.

In my opinion graphics are no longer a selling point to a game. Every FPS out there can look amazing but can the plot really pull you in? Can that plot draw you to play the game a second time? Can that plot continue on into a sequel?

This processor would take over the work of processing sound and relieve the burden from the actual CPU of the machine which was needed for other critical activities same concept as a GPU. Sounds to me the processing of the sound was different from single-player to multiplayer, maybe there was extra over head to process where the sounds were coming from within the environment. That extra overhead was put your CPU over the edge. Of course disabling the sound helped your game play. But today with multi-core processing and fast processors this is less of a concern and doesn't create the bottle neck like it used to. Heck, we might be seeing CPU/GPU combos on the same chip in the near future, I believe AMD and ATI were working on that?
