That's nice and all, but it's like if Star Wars had ended right before the big Death Star battle and just had a few sentences before the credits rolled mentioning it in passing. The entire story builds and builds and builds...and then the most contrived and pat crap is spewed forth for a few pages and then it ends.
I really enjoyed the rest of the book, though, don't get me wrong.
The problem with Snow Crash is that the ending was stupid. It seemed like he just got bored and wanted to hurry up and finish the book. I liked it right up until the end. What a cheesy, lame, let down of an ending. Sheesh. I'm guess maybe I'm a little bitter.
Exactly. So the Revolution won't be Nintendo's primary focus at this year's E3, huh? I guess that's why they bothered sending out E3 '06 invitations half a year in advance to all the major gaming news outlets, announcing that the Revolution would be unveiled at...E3 2006.
You obviously don't realize that the United Staties is almost the only country in the world where "gun control" is an issue. In most countries you can't just walk into a store, purchase a shotgun & shells, then carry the firearm right out of the door with you.
There is an excellent historical reason for this, although sadly, most people have forgotten it.
The real reason I don't want caddies on discs is that I keep all of my CDs and DVDs on several thousand spindles stashed around my apartment. Discs in caddies won't fit in the normal Case Logic style cases, either. It would just be annoying.
Compare that to the PSP. The PSP is designed to be moved around. They had to caddy the discs otherwise people would have ruined them fast. When playing a PSP you may be walking, in a car (which could hit a pothole), on train, on a bus, flying, tripping (oops), etc.
I guess you missed the great portable CD player revolution of 1984. Strangely, also ushered in by Sony.
haha. Thanks for the link. The Toy Story part isn't even the best bit of the article. This is:
Fries said Microsoft hasn't settled on target numbers for initial Xbox sales, but he said the European release of the console was delayed until next year mainly because the company wants to have a strong launch in the United States and Japan.
"We don't want to disappoint gamers," he said, in a not-so-veiled reference to Sony's PlayStation 2 shortages.
When Israelis shoot Palestinian children, it always makes headlines and sells lots of print. Therefore, we should censor this violence against children, lest we encourage more of it.
I don't know why I'm still playing along, but what the hell.
The difference is causation. The newspaper publishers don't say "Well, time for a new issue, let's go kill some children!" This is so blindingly obvious that I am going to assume you are trolling.
Actually I agree with the anonymous coward, you can not support censorship against child porn, but also againt censorship in general. You have to take your pick.
The difference, of course, being that the process of creating a newspaper or an opinion doesn't involve violence against a child.
The absolute biggest factor in health insurance cost isn't your group size, age, or even # of dependants; its whether or not you are a tobacco smoker.
I agree with everything you are saying (I'm in a similar situation...we also have 8 employees). I'm not sure the bit I quoted is entirely accurate across the board, though. Having a wife can triple the rate for a young guy, due to the possibility of kids. If you actually have kids, my god. The difference between being single and being married with kids can be the difference between $150/month and $850/month. This is roughly based on our last rate increase for a Humana PPO.
The number of children is irrelevant, but there is a HUGE jump from 0 kids to any kids.
This may have been implied in your statement, but I thought I'd chime in.
Whether or not you feel (personally) that the games are worth playing is irrelevant. I happen to like the games on the cube, but others that might not may have found that a (erroneous) point of contention. That's all.
I understand your point of view, but I disagree. Nintendo's approach to shunning various innovations (like the ability to play CDs and DVDs) is one of the main reasons they lost the support of the market and, hence, third party developers and the very games that their device was built to play.
If you don't like it, ignore it. All negative mods are meta-moderated 'unfair'. ALL OF THEM
However, I agree 100% with this, and follow the same strategy.
Guess if I'm successful at attracting an audience on slashdot by doing the very thing you claim is "my own logic" - wouldn't that make you wrong and prove my point?
No. It was a joke.
And you're missing the point - the audience isn't chased away if they're merely consuming another of your products. You're making the mistake of considering the film industry to be discrete and separate from other forms of entertainment. Incorrect assumption buddy.
How is that mistake? If people eschew cars in favor of bikes, do the CEO's of the car companies feel better because it's all transportation?
Audiences aren't chased away. In fact it's bigger than ever before. they're just doing different things - market fragmentation. So the industry diversifies by producing all of those products in house. But you've got it, dude. No more will I engage you. A wise man said... lol.
Hollywood and the marketplace loves guys like you - you hate everything, you disagree with everything, yet you consume voraciously. You offer no reasons, make no assertions - you're contrary because it's the only way you stand out... which means you don't. What this means is that you're inherently insecure. Because marketers need to inspire insecurity in order to then sell you the cure (their product) you are the easiest guy to sell to. You've done half their job for them! Good job, bud.
Yet more conjecture, ad hominem attacks, and the brave obliteration of your own strawmen. You have me convinced. You're way off base, but I'll accept your summary judgement and get to Best Buy as soon as possible.
The film industry is suffering from issues that are independent of the product.
And this attitude is why the film industry will continue to chase away audiences, year by year.
My point remains: you dumb down your product and cast a wide net and you get great returns. You smarten up your product and you necessarily reduce your market. This is clear and evident across the board. It's why more people watch MTV than The Science Channel. It's why more people watch American Idol than that documentary on string theory. It's why more people own ipods than other, cheaper, feature-rich DAPs.
This is such a stupid generalization with so many strawmen and baseless claims that I don't even know where to begin.
I guess you are using your own logic and dumbing down your posts in hopes of attracting an audience. Sadly, this being slashdot, you will probably be successful.
I work in film, and film meetings go like this: "This is a great idea, but we need to dumb it down." The intelligence benchmark used by the film industry is a 12 year old boy.
[snip]
You're right, that is a poor analogy. Basically you are saying "Here is what has been working very badly for the film industry. In conclusion, Sony should follow this strategy to achieve great success!"
Problem is, the PSP isn't selling enough *games* which is where Sony makes their money. Yeah, the PSP itself has sold well, but Sony is losing a hell of a lot of profit in game sales.
Thank god they don't own a huge movie business that they could use to sell additional content for the device!
ur so wrong my 65 year old mum is far more into gaming than my 42 40 year old bros and my 70 year old dad. Prising the PSP out of her hands sometimes... a difficult task. welcome to my world!
I'm surprised your mom can still walk straight, much less play games, after having 42 children in one year.
I've only played the PS2 and PC versions. I can't count the number of times I was trying to run away or after someone and instead ended up squatting in the middle of the road in the middle of people trying to kill me. The running around/turning controls, in general, were clumsy and half ass.
I think more of an immediate concern is the recent takeover of the bulk of the currency trading market by Linden after the withdrawal of GOM. There is an interesting story there if you read between the lines on the forums and various announcements from that time period.
I'm confused as to why it got fixed. Taco has said repeatedly (and angrily) that the typos are there on purpose, and that correcting them destroys the slashdot atmosphere.
Born in Texas actually. I just like the euphony of the phrase "cop a snog".
I live in Texas, and I can say with authority that if you use the word "euphony" in conversations about video game characters making out, you probably don't cop a lot of snogs.
That's nice and all, but it's like if Star Wars had ended right before the big Death Star battle and just had a few sentences before the credits rolled mentioning it in passing. Thank you friendly grammer nazi.
Grammar.
HTH.
HAND.

It is rather hard to misinterpret that.
You obviously don't realize that the United Staties is almost the only country in the world where "gun control" is an issue. In most countries you can't just walk into a store, purchase a shotgun & shells, then carry the firearm right out of the door with you.

Exactly, I'm thinking 1-2 dollars a NES, 3-5 SNES, 10-15 N64 I would def spend my money on that
You obviously haven't looked at how proud ($$$) they seem to be of their GBA NES/SNES ports...
The real reason I don't want caddies on discs is that I keep all of my CDs and DVDs on several thousand spindles stashed around my apartment. Discs in caddies won't fit in the normal Case Logic style cases, either. It would just be annoying.

One more try, and then the stuffed bear is mine.
PS Here's the Microsoft 'Toy Story' graphics claim:

"We don't want to disappoint gamers," he said, in a not-so-veiled reference to Sony's PlayStation 2 shortages.
That's classic.
Seriously: They probably don't care if your disc gets scratched. In fact, it is good for business, as Sony makes a lot of money off game sales.
This must be why Sony made it a point not to add plastic caddies to UMDs!
Oh, that's right, they did add them to UMDs. I guess you're just making things up.
When Israelis shoot Palestinian children, it always makes headlines and sells lots of print. Therefore, we should censor this violence against children, lest we encourage more of it.

Give me a break.
The absolute biggest factor in health insurance cost isn't your group size, age, or even # of dependants; its whether or not you are a tobacco smoker.

Why did you even bother typing all that in?
Problem is, the PSP isn't selling enough *games* which is where Sony makes their money. Yeah, the PSP itself has sold well, but Sony is losing a hell of a lot of profit in game sales.
Thank god they don't own a huge movie business that they could use to sell additional content for the device!
The Gamecube was specifically designed to do one thing very well: play games. (Whether or not you feel it has games worth playing is moot.)
How is that moot? Even if it can play games better than anything else on the market, if there aren't enough interesting games, what's the point?
ur so wrong my 65 year old mum is far more into gaming than my 42 40 year old bros and my 70 year old dad. Prising the PSP out of her hands sometimes... a difficult task. welcome to my world!

Unless, he was lying.
I just can't make myself believe that.
Born in Texas actually. I just like the euphony of the phrase "cop a snog".
