This link has been posted a billion times on slashdot already, but here it is again. 10 billion dollars for the first elevator, and roughly 3 billion apiece for the next ones. I have a feeling that construction on the space elevator will begin in the beginning of the next decade, though I'm not sure who will build it. According to this survey nanotubes are already produced in quantities of hundreds of tons, with production in all four regions with space-launch capability. Most likely we'll see two competing elevator projects, with the chinese and NASA-ESA as the competitors.

Granted, I'm a city boy, but you really don't know much about farming, do you? A cow only has to be inseminated once. You only ever inseminate the cow again if you want a calf. It will continue to give milk as long as you keep milking. The biological signal in all mammals is to turn off the milk when it stops being used.

Nope. They will give milk for about nine months after the birth of a calf. Because of that they have to be inseminated yearly, usually about three months after the previous calf has been born.

  12. Mp3 is the cassette of the digital era on Ogg Vorbis Share Reaches 12.3% on P2P Traffic · · Score: 1

FLAC achieves a compression ratio of 55% on average. So assuming a 44100 Hz 16-bit stereo wav:

    (4500000000 bytes/(44100 hz * 2 bytes * 2)) / 0.55 = ~13 hours

But even if you can't hear a difference with the equipment you use now, you can't be sure that the next set of speakers won't enable you to hear a difference; when I originally got introduced to mp3, I ripped a few cd's with a bitrate of 128 kbit because I couldn't hear a difference between that and the original. But when I upgraded to a better set of speakers, my mp3's sounded the same as before, but the original cd's had a wider range of sounds that couldn't be heard on my old speakers. By using FLAC you can be sure that your audio will be a perfect copy of the original; I would think that this is especially important if you archive your music on DVD's. Also, what's the point with digital audio if you can't have identical copy of the original?

Oh, and I didn't know lossless is popular among live concert recorders. It makes sense though; if the source is of poor quality, degrading it further with lossy compression sounds like a very bad idea.

When has Microsoft announced that? The only info about HD-DVD and Xbox360 I found was this quote from Bill Gates:

"The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format," Gates explained. "We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else."

That could just as easily mean Blu-Ray, depending on which format takes off in the consumer market. And yes, I know Microsoft is one of the supporters of HD-DVD, but if Blu-Ray becomes a great success in the couple of years before the Xbox360 2.0 comes out, I don't really see how they could try to force HD-DVD on people.
