I live in North Carolina but am currently on a little R and R here in Okinawa after a tour in Iraq. It saddens me to always hear these stories because I have been to many countries with some absolutely abysmal internet service providers that basically have a stranglehold on all the bases I have been on by a private agreement with the US Govt somehow. I dont see why they would have a problem with having a community ran ISP since they could easily just make it a utility. We have citizen ran electricity providers where I ocme from and they turn out just fine.:/

Here in North Carolina we have the shitty labor laws around. Their are no concepts of breaks and or mandatory time off from work. They can work you 15+ hour shifts and you dont have to have a break.
Breaks are only given at the discretion of the company, the company I work for does not allow breaks, cigarette or otherwise. Lunches are included with this, not mandatory.
Also, days off are not mandatory. I worked for 2 months one time without a single day off....61 days of straight work.

ATT is the exact reason I left my cable provider. Our local cable loop was provided by ATT and was the shittiest experience I have ever had with latency issues due to a ISP. You can read about the fiasco on the DSLReports.com forums the fact that ATT ignored the problem for 8 months before fixing it and even publically said our area was on the shitlist for repairs.
ATT can lick my nuts, they are a shitty bandwidth provider.
I'm not really jumping to conclusions as of yet on the gaming performance of the Conroe. Some games run better on Intel, some better on AMD. Who knows, maybe F.E.A.R is one of them. All I know is that most games are GPU intensive and not CPU dependent ( Half Life 2 is about the only game I can think of that is mainly CPU intensive ):/

PCI-Express is just another marketing gimmick for the masses with the IQ's of yourself to eat and gobble up thinking that PCI-Express is going to make your computer run faster compared to the same card on a AGP bus.
We do not even use the max bandwidth of AGP 8x yet. What makes you think that we need to use 16x right yet when we are barely scratching the 4x surface.
AGP cards in alot of tests have outperformed the PCI-Express counterparts.

The real damn question is why are the Slashdot editors advertising for a company that has nothing to do with the news that "matters" to us nerds. I would never buy a computer that was built by someone else. I can build the same PC even if I do not have warehouses full of inventory and can get discounts on certain pieces of hardware. They always charge like 400% more than what the computer is actually worth. I've seen Alienware's and other "gaming extreme" pc's that have been sold @ 5k dollars when I could build the same PC for around 750-1200 dollars. All depends on what you are trying to build.
I hate that these companies are cashing in on the hoardes of morons that buy into the whole "gaming" market. I've seen so many things labeled for "gamers" that it makes me want to puke and I would like to see Maddox's take on this whole shitload of assraping that companies are doing to people who dont know anybetter.
I am on Charter High Speed here in North Carolina and happy with what I'm getting. 29.99 a month for 3mbps, but since I'm in a country bumpkin town the guy noticed no one was on my local node. So he decided he would be nice after I chitchatted him for a couple of minutes and showed him some badass websites / stuff to do and some new games since his son is a supposed gamer. He bumped me to 10mbps and I could have never been happier.
I think most of the doom and gloom comes from the dropping revenues. The dropping revenues can be credited to people at home now pirating games and music and such at a mass quantity due to the ease of use of most filesharing / bitorrent / irc and the like. But seeing as how I pirated 99% of the games in the past 10 years it's all because of one reason. The market doesn't want to stagnate.
I would pirate a game just to see how well it would run on my current rig (and if the gameplay was good or not). It sucked having a 2 month old graphics card that wouldn't even run a newer game all because the guys at ATI or Nvidia wanted to come out with a bleeding edge graphical game with no substance that only a 500 dollar video card could handle.
A lot of the newer games now have no substance just as the article mentioned, but most people are content with graphics as they are now and want to stop spending their hard earned cash on a 400-dollar graphics card (I did the smart thing and got a 6600 GT when it dropped to 150). People are starting to wait a year until the 500-dollar cards drop by a third of their original price, then are excited cause they can play the games that they could not before. Only to find out that in 2 months another hyped up card will come out that 5 games will take advantage of, and it will be the 500-dollar cards suitable enough to run it.
People do not like spending money on a game that is all hype and pretty graphics. Gameplay has waned in the past years. And it's pretty deplorable. I can see where this guy is coming from.
