Do we really need faster processors? Even most games don't require tons of processing power (if you look at their recommended system requirements). What you really need is ram, a good graphics card, fast hard drive etc... Processors have become moot.

pay money to get the new version of os to change the UI
worked fine for me (on firefox, windows). Took around 10 seconds to fully load the personalized information. Depending on what time you checked it out, one reason why it might have been running slow is because they were updating their servers with a new code and getting slashdotted at the same time.
You can already move around your data. You have alternatives such as open office and there is also office for word. Microsoft shouldn't have to make sure 'applications' work on every platform on the planet (they can't seem to make their products work well on their on platform in the first place).... just as Apple isn't required by law to move their exclusive MAC softwares to the windows platform.
You can use a computer until it wears out even if you use microsoft products (but you can always switch to linux since it has good support for older hardware). I have a computer at home thats a shitty "emachines" with a 800mhz (i think) celeron with 192mb ram and it runs winxp just fine for websurfing, email, watching movies and burning music etc.. (I just removed the unncessary services and startup shit to make it efficient).
I don't think the right to take software developed by others and change it and fix it etc... is a inherent right. Just as you wouldn't expect Coke to give out their ingredints so that you could change it a bit to your liking, it isn't imperative for a software company to do either. I agree, it would be helpful... but its not an inalienable right. You should however have a choice to develop your own software etc... and I doubt microsoft is preventing you from doing that.
So in essence, you already have what you expect, you just don't like microsoft so you're willing to blame them for all the problems. True blame rests on stupid public policy that thinks its a good idea to pay for software instead of just downloading it for free (ie. linux). We all know how to solve that don't we? Be more involved instead of bitchin'. If there is demand, the hardware people will support it... we all know that.
i like the media library feature in winamp 5. its the only reason i upgraded to it. It automatically updates whatever directories you tell it to. Before you had to use playlists etc... now the media library is used to set up playlists.
1. when i opened up ie7, ciadeamon started indexing my harddrive for no reason. I had to go to services and disable it. I don't know if it is related, but I had no other programs (other than speedswitch xp) running. It was slowing my computer down to a crawl since laptop harddrives are pretty slow as it is.
2. somehow i manged to make the file, edit, view etc... menu disappear. In ie6 and firefox I could move the file/edit/view etc.. menu right next to the location bar, but now for somereason they don't let you do it. If you're a ie develpor, i'm not sure how to report this, so just ask me what to do and i'll try. It still shows up when i press alt+f (for file), but then disappears . This isn't a prpoblem for me, I actually like it because less space is taken up, but for 'n00bs' i suppose that would be a huge problem.
3. the search engine hotkey is ctrl e, please change it to ctrl+k, because that is more accesible (as it is in the home key row).
4. where are the live bookmarks?
5. they haven't improved the search (ctrl+f). I couldn't find any option for 'find as you type' or a simple hotkey like '.' to start searching the page. The same old invasive interface is there. I did enable the 'search pane' but have no clue what that does because it requires me to restart ie (which i will do when i'm done typing this up).
Good things 1. ram usage is not too much 2. default search engine is google 3. while i miss livebookmarks, I love the new rss interface and how you can search etc. 4. print preview etc... is good.
i've never understood why people like itunes soo much, because it tries to integrate soo much, it tends to slow down my computer quite a bit. Now, I must admit i've only tried the PC version, so maybe that might be the reason why (along with the fact that I do not use an ipod) but I found Windows media to be equally easy to use and faster.
For the record I use VLC media player for video and winamp for mp3s. I find they are ALOT better than itunes.
Most large privatley owned companies are only able to do that because they have a bunch of extremely rich investors. Most normal americans would be denied the ability to invest in these corporations. Also, the companies in the stock market are far larger then these private companies you speak of (yes this is a random bluff, but i doubt you'll be able to prove me wrong).
Also regarding this argument you bring forth : "And if a company was not able "to grow large enough" maybe there would be some space for *another* company: " here are two counter arguments :
1. it is bad for consumers because there is very little specialization (walmart is able to sell things more efficiently because of its larlge size, dell is able to sell things more efficiently because of its larger size etc..)
2. We would end up using economic resources inefficiently (see above).
3. Foreign companies would eaisly destory these less competitive smaller companies (if small companies WERE competitive economically, then obviously there would be more around today).
As for your rant about the increased competition from china and the cost of living increasing etc... (which by the way has nothing to do with the stock market), I do agree that the USA is facing unfair competition from China (the people there are paid virtually nothing, treated inhumanely at times, corporations are esseitally subsidized by the govt etc..) but I do not see the connection of that with large corporations.
One example is Walmart. The problem isn't that Walmart is a BIG corporation, the problem is that it gets all of its resources from china at a very cheap price and harms the u.s trade deficit and companies within the u.s . You can fix it not by destroying walmart but by doing other things such as enacting tarrifs etc.. So really, your problem is not with the stock market and large corporations, but its with the ongoing trend of globalization.
My oppinion is that the government should not try to hamper free trade. It is very possible that the cost of living will go down, simply because the goods we export from china are much cheaper so as consumers we spend less. And as the chinese become richer, they can buy more goods from US. We have for a long time benifitted greatly from the poverty of the rest of the world. Now that asia is finally rising, ofcourse it will be harder for us to make easy money. The key to solving the problem is investing in your own nation, not spending money on pointless wars and finally getting rid of all the curroption in congress so the govt is better equiped to help its people compete.

wow, without the stock market companies would never be able to grow large enough. They constantly need an influx of capital to grow. If you take the stock market away, it becomes harder for them to find investors. It would be pretty dumb to just have the "stock market dissappear" as that would destory alot of economic growth.
I would also like to note that this feature is in the beta version already, so no worries about it disappearing like winfs (it is after all, a simple thing to do)
"Billg's personal $100 million goes to health initiatives over ten years, while $421 million of Microsoft's money goes..."
Bill G can do whatever he likes with his money (so he obviously donates to charity), mircosoft on the other hand is a business and is responsible to its shareholders (so they obviously worry about their competition).
does site: let you search more than one site?
"This is a known bug in current builds, and has already been fixed by the audio team in their private builds in preparation for RTM."
as long as it reduces the amount of mac fanboys (due to their inability to reproduce), i love this feature.

Doesn't anyone else find it odd how the "most innovative" award goes to Viamatic, which is essentially a rip-off from ie7's new feature?
thank you for pointing that out.... i wish i could mod you up

Huh? At my home I have a 600 mhz celeron, with like 192mb ram. Windows xp pro runs perfectly fine on it.

sony = rootkit = no trust

centrino seems to be doing pretty damn good and when you think about it.
Yeah, most def... apple is a pretty damn good alternative to windows.

I didn't say that microsoft was better than apple, all i said was that vista will also have this feature. Get over it.... fanboy.
just to let others know, win vista will also sport this feature.
just as playing halo 2 on live was the biggest incentive for people to NOT hack their box, halo 3 will most likley do the same.

Live requires you to have broadband in the first place. There may be bundles out there that offer both.
