  1. Re:hmmm on Google Working on Desktop Linux · · Score: 1

The problem is, most people don't see it that way. They've been brought up to think that nothing in life is truly free. If someone offers them free software, they'll either think a) it's crippleware b) it's full of malware or c) it's inferior to what they could get from a store. I know if I gave my mother the choice between two pieces of software: one FLOSS, the other off at Best Buy, she'd take the latter every time. And her choice would probably be easier to use and not as buggy.

Civ 4 is Firaxis' way of redeeming itself for the disappointment that was Civ 3. While they kept culture in, it's been improved so that it actually works, and most of the things that made Civ 3 so annoying have been either scrapped or reworked. On the whole, it's just a better game in every way (if you have a system that can run it). So yes, Civ 4 is a huge improvement on the mediocrity that was Civ 3.

In this case, the reason why the coffee was substantially hotter than most stores is because McDonald's had meticulously conducted market research and determined that enough people thought coffee brewed at that temperature tasted better to justify the extra energy expended. And the woman happened to squeeze the coffee cup while she was driving and had the cup in between her legs. My point is, it's not quite as easy to determine culpability. Personally, I think the people in question were more at fault than McDonald's, mostly because several hundred thousand people a day manage to drink McDonald's coffee without burning themselves bad enough to require hospitalization. Shit just sometimes happens.

As a former phone surveyer (not telemarketer, mind you), I can tell you they probably don't mind holding: they get paid by the hour. I myself would have loved being put on indefinite hold, and it would have been even better if I was required to stay on the line.

It was a common point of contention among medieval thinkers: how many angels could dance on the head of a pin? Since then it has become a phrase used to describe a pedantic philosophical question.

If science is the search for fact and not truth, then what are the facts thet lead scientists to macroevolution? There has, to my knowledge, never been any observed speciation in the lab, and the actual events take place over such a large scale as to be unmeasurable. Macroevolution sounds more like a postulation that aims to get at the truth of what happened than an acknowledgement of the facts of the situation.

i have to wonder why a simple system hasn't been impemented yet? I believe it has to do with the relatively small size (and possibly shape) of the ISS. Making it rotate wouldn't generate nearly enough gravity, and it wouldn't be uniform.

Does anyone know who is violating their contracts to get onto iTMS? Since I'm guessing each contract is unique, it will be interesting to see how Sony handles the inevitable lawsuits against popular bands vs. non-name ones. And whether the ones who are breaching their contract will ever be able to get signed by a major label again.

  10. Re:What do middle school kids need laptops for? on When Should You Buy Your Kid A Laptop? · · Score: 1

Not even kids in college need laptops. I rarely see them in class, and when they are they're used to watch movies or play games while the professor is talking, not taking notes. Pretty much everyone I know at school who owns a laptop just keeps it at their desk. A desktop doesn't take up that much space, it's worth saving a few hundred bucks. So, why the emphasis on laptops? A desktop will suit them just fine and cost about half as much. Plus there's the benefit of being able to see what they're doing.

"I've already missed the boat on things like text messaging. My phone can do it, I just don't use the feature." That doesn't really mean anything regarding your acceptance of technology. Hell, I'm 19 and a tech lover and I hardly ever use text messaging because it's a pain to use. It's not that you're not "keeping up," just that you don't have any practical need for the feature.

The last patch, from what I hear, introduced a memory leak into the game. They're working on a patch to fix that. For the record, v1.0 runs fine on my Athlon 2800+ with 1 GB of RAM and a Radeon 9800 pro, even when the settings are all at highest and I'm running at 1280x760.
