    He covered filtering in the letter. Besided being difficult to implement, it adds a performance bottleneck to the system.

    Perhaps his Internet access is going through multiple software firewalls, firewall appliances, etc. so he doesn't get hit by malware.

    Shouldn't it be? I wouldn't hook a linux machine directly to the internet either unless it had multiple NICs and its sole purpose was a firewall.

    Hopefully somebody posts a review that actually tells me how Fedora Core 5 is different than 4

    It's packaged with MySQL 5, which was enough incentive for me. Being a Linux newbie, I was getting all sorts of errors trying to upgrade MySQL. Upgrading the entire OS was easier.

    Plus the boot screen looks cool. That's important. ;)

    a 50,000 watt transmitter on one frequency...

    When conditions are right ham radio operators can communicate across continents on a few watts using simple low-band radios and home made antennas.

    Sure, modern gadgets use high frequencies but still a couple hundred watts is plenty to wreak havoc in your neighborhood and doesn't cost much at all.

    Is anyone else reminded of the 1985 movie real genius? The prof. doesn't even show up for class. There is a real-to-real machine sitting on the desk playing a lecture to a room full of tape recorders.

    Fast forward to today and the prof. could just email the lecture to everyone and be done with it.

    They said it in the article. Data handed to the fuzz by a civilian isn't admissible before a judge. They can only use the information to aid in launching their own investigation, which of course requires resources.

    Yes! I also tell users to press the standby button on top of the cable modem every time they walk away from the computer. They always ask me what that button does. How come the cable co. doesn't explain it when they install the darn things???

    Next time tell them you are going to do bookeeping for small businesses.

    It's quiet, involves computers and would justify a T1 line but is less mysterious to politicians and old-timers than "software" or "internet".

    I think everyone who eats meat should be required to actually kill, clean and cook an animal, at least once, with their own hands.

    Been there, done that. Tasted goooooood. And I agree, they should.

    In fact, if I had enough money and free time I would only eat animals that I killed myself. Unfortunatly I'm not a very good hunter and it's awfully tough to hold down a full time IT job and run a farm at the same time.

    Whew, I guess it shows my age. I had a computer in college also. I spent $100 on a 14.4 modem to add to it. Spent hours figuring out how to get Doom 1 to connect up with a friend across town. And learned to boot win3.1 in safe mode when connecting to the campus in order to see the internet graphically.

    I bet this isn't true. Japanese tend to have smaller homes than here in the U.S. In fact I remember hearing the Nintendo Game Cube had a higher chance of success in Japan than the xBox simply due to size. I just can't picture folks having closets full of 486's and boat anchor stereos that are suddenly a safety concern.

    This might be true. But I think it's more a matter of economics. When RAM, HD space, and bandwidth are cheap, you don't want your developers spending time trying to save 8K of space.

    Not to mention, marketing insists that everythink look as pretty and flashy as can be. All those pictures and flash movies take up space.

    Sounds good. But how do you convince management that focus is required in the first place? I know some executives and salespeople who figure a programmer should be able to write great code in 20 minute increments between phone calls and meetings.

    I don't know why I'm responding, this thread is already bogged down. But here's my $0.02 anyway.

    You are making money by applying a subset of your skills to the business world. That's how the system works.

    Take some initiative and build something in your spare time that is a challenge and the business could use. Such as a system that handles the mundane parts of your job automatically. Maybe they won't need you anymore, but more likely they'll see your potential and ask for more.

    It seems to me there are radical nut cases on both sides of this argument. Half of them are here on slashdot. The other half are on Christian forums getting all worked up and calling people names.

    Children need to learn about science and religion. That way they grow up with the knowledge to make their own decisions. Furthermore they won't assume that everyone who disagrees with them must be uninformed or stupid.
