So, how's that 'just workin' for ya?

Sorry, I don't mean to be flamebait, but this story is irritating. If it were a Windows story, it would be, "Microsoft update bricks user pc's" with the summary "Microsoft, in yet another example of shoddy programming, has managed to brick billions of users' pc's with their latest auto-update. With most users unaware they can even disable these updates, is it really any surprise that they've screwed their customer once again?"

Instead, we get this, "Ah gee golly look, I guess this little update means we should let someone else work the kinks out before we update our macs!" Nevermind that Apple has a history of shutting down their hardware via updates.

NOTE: I believe brick == unrecoverable. I'm merely stating what I think the summary would have been, not what it should have been/etc.

No, really, I'm serious! They use snake oil. The oil excreted by snakes as they burrow from their underground lairs is what actually creates oil. However, it takes combinations of snake oil from both venomous and non-venomous snakes to make oil that is combustable -- That's why there are MULTIPLE PHASES of the transformation from CO2 to the necessary compounds.

The real secret here is finding snakes capable of slithering over blocks of dry ice without freezing to death. The way they do that is they pour piping hot McDonald's coffee on the snakes before having them slither over the dry ice to create the oil sludges required. Hence, they use snake oil.

That, or this is a crock of shit and shouldn't get the time of day.

No, a gasoline engine has more environmental pollutants in its exhaust, whereas a diesel has more of a toxic (as in harmful to humans) exhaust. Do we want the air to be more toxic or do we want the air to help break down the ozone layer? Neither is good, but I prefer the latter if forced to choose (assuming equal levels of damage).

Yeah, but the OP is arguing that his new 'clean' motor is safe. I'd argue that it is worse to have a clear, odorless, & toxic exhaust than an ugly, smelly, & stinky one. People will think that their new cars are better for the environment and public health than a standard combustion engine when that just ain't so. Even the 'clean' diesel motors are far more toxic than a good IC engine, AFAIK. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  13. Re:Latency. on New Multi-GPU Technology With No Strings Attached · · Score: 2, Informative

This is most likely due to a feature on newer cards and drivers whereby the video card actually renders ahead of time. They have algorithms to predict what the next 3-5 frames will be and the GPU uses extra cycles to go ahead and render those. That way, if something happens like there turns out to be a high-geometry object that pops out and gets loaded into memory, the video card has a buffer before the user notices a drop in their framerate.

The drawback? You get control lag. Newer drivers let you adjust this or even set it to 0 -- but you will notice that your overall FPS will decrease if you set it to 0 because the card cannot optimize ahead-of-time that way.

Many articles on slashdot are not tech articles. Also, among those articles, very few deal with nuances of laser technology. I'd go so far as to say that most articles on programming, robotics, etc, have nothing at all to do with lasers, plasmons, constructive interference, or many of the other things listed in that summary. To most people, that article reads like this:

Harvard & lab has lasers blah blah blah blah lasers blah blah lense mirror blah blah aim blah blah blah vaporize from space blah blah blah tears for fears.

  19. Translation: on Collimating Semiconductor Lasers Without Lenses · · Score: 2, Informative

"Researchers at Harvard University and Hamamatsu Photonics have found a way to collimate lasers without lenses. In the new 'plasmonic collimator' technique, grooves are etched directly into the semiconductor laser's internal mirror. This results in surface plasmons giving rise to constructive interference, eliminating the need for the bulky optical lenses that usually focus the light from semiconductor lasers. The technique has promise for steering laser beams without moving parts and for working with polarized light."

Translation for people like me: Smart dudes at the #1 school and a lab with lots of funding and laserbeams found a way to fire said laserbeams by shaping the mirror instead of having a flat mirror and firing it through a shaping lense. This is good 'cuz now they will be able to do stuff they had a hard time doing before.
