    This is why movies have producers. It's to keep the artists in check. Someone should have kept the brains in check when they designed this thing. Instead of being smaller and useful, it's just a gigantic waste of money -- the Waterworld of the scientific community.

    Once it 'works' . . . my guess is something will go wrong with the measuring instruments. There's no reason to think that the base functionality is the only thing flawed. It'll be great to finally have particles fire around the track, collide, and have bad data.

    It's more secure because if one browser instance gets compromised, you don't automatically compromise all of the data currently in other browser instances.

    At least that's my understanding. I could just as easily be wrong.

    Oh yeah, sure, it's very easy for amateurs to make cars go 400mph. I see it all the time with funny cars/etc.

    Of course, they only go that fast for a couple brief seconds. Then, after about 2 runs down the track, they have to completely rebuild the engines. And the tires have to be replaced after each race. And the engines can't pass smog tests. And the cars aren't street legal.

    Everyone knows lots of things that go this fast. What makes this car amazing is that it goes this fast and it's a god damn daily driver. If you can afford it.

    Wouldn't it be far easier to lift a superstructure via deflation? Make a big carbon-nanotube globe and just vacuum it. Then you don't have to worry about harvesting impossible amounts of helium. To control rate of ascension/descension, you would just let air in through an airlock-type-valve for controlled flow to avoid implosion, and naturally just have some specialized pump to lower the air pressure inside to make it rise.

    My biggest fear regarding aliens is if they are not offshoots of individuals but of a colony structure, such as an ant. In that instance, we would be doomed. They would not hesitate to take over our resources and us for the good of their colony.

    1. There is no excuse for her statement regarding how the richness of a latina's life experiences give them the ability to make better decisions than a white man. News flash: That is racism, bigotry, the whole works. As a white male, I've moved around the country, lived on both coasts, attended schools in three states, had two friends kill themselves, had many others not. I've seen both financial ruin (my parents were hundreds of thousands in debt after their business failed when I was a child -- they did not declare bankruptcy and eventually paid back every dime) as well as upper-class lifestyle. I've had pets. I've traveled the world from Honduras to Hong Kong. Fact of the matter is that her lack of respect for MY opinions is greatly disturbing.

    2. She holds a hard-line, firm belief in affirmative action, regardless of the circumstances. By god if the percentages aren't represented, then the reason must be RACISM! Never mind that statistics and probabilities may mean that the 15 people who ace a test might just be more qualified for their job.

    There's more, but I'm busy and you have better things to do than read my rantings. Needless to say, I hope she flunks.

    Windows 7 accessed data noticeably faster than Windows Vista, although still not as fast as XP. However . . .

    Most of us would never get past that first line there.

    If wikipedia publicly announces that they are instituting measures to prevent their online software program from being accessed by members of scientology and adds a scientology clause to their TOS, then they can press for severe penalties against scientologists for making edits under those lovely dmca measures with regard to purposefully circumnavigating security/access to digital mechanisms.

    Well, IANAL, but I at least hope that is the case. Would be nice . . .

    In all seriousness, though, my assumption is that the average last.fm user is no different than the average facebook user. Which is to say completely following the bell curve with only the top 2% or so being 1) savvy computer users with 2) an opinion about the RIAA who 3) care about the privacy of their use of a free online radio service.

    But that's just my thoughts on it. If you have some statistics that somehow demonstrate that the users of THIS online service are somehow superior power users, feel free to post'em.

    Except that MMO is not an 'addiction' . . . it is a 'habit.' His friend will go through no withdrawal if his account expired tomorrow. So, try to find something more engaging than the MMO. If said friend tries it and enjoys the alternate activity, great.

    If not, oh well. You can lead a horse to water . . . but keep in mind that if this friend is choosing the MMO online world over doing anything with you when you are right there, perhaps they do not perceive your friendship in the same light as you do.

    If he wrote it down, sue him for libel, too. It's pretty obvious that saying your business is a criminal enterprise that endangers its customers' lives would be damaging to your business, and there seems to be plenty of evidence showing that it is better run than many unmentioned competitors.

    Because a 1TB hard drive has a minimum of 3 platters. This could get it done in 2 platters. And that matters. A lot. First there is size, second there is the number of moving parts required. And that is with this tech at its infancy and HDD tech being very mature.

    Then there's also the issue of durability. It will be interesting to see if this new format breaks down, or if it can store data more indefinitely.

    Why should they stop trying to convince people that $60/mo makes sense? Fact is that after the computer is paid, people will still be paying $60 a month. After owning the computer and internet access for 4 years, not only have they recouped the price of the system, but they've recouped it twice over.

    Computer: $400
    Internet Access $30/mo (normally)

    At $60/mo, the phone company needs 14 months to repay the price of the computer (which, by the way, is probably tax deductible as a business expense anyway since it's 'free' with the service). Everything after that is cash money.
