Yah, even though I am an AMD supporter, I would not want to see Intel parish. If that did happen, AMD would just turn into another Intel and we would be back to square one.
Well, that is a huge problem. When a judge or somebody gives the ok for a search warrant (ie, sneak in) he may not understand all the circumstances. Face it, judges probably know dick all about what is right or wrong on the internet. All they can do is horribly apply what they know to each circumstance they come upon. I wouldnt be suprised if they just start handing out search warrants left and right just because they dont understand what they are really doing.
eg1 )
FBI wants a search warrant. They tell the judge the current situation that Mr. S. Kiddie was found talking about hacking utils that were used in some major.com corporation crack . The judge would then authorize the search warrant because there is reasonable and probable grounds that he was the one that did.
How is this different from being suspected to have a gun that matches the description / make of the one that shot some guy? This person probably linked somewhat to the case, say, a neighbour or friend of the family? How, from a judges perspective, is this different from having the weapon "cracking util", and the link to the case "being one of those pesky internet hackers".
When a judge applies his knowlege and the constitution to something that was complety foreign during the time its conseption, there is bound to be a disrepencies here or there. Its simply just another situation where law is being misapplied to something that it was never thought to be under the juristiction at the time.
Even if it was possible to see the ISS during the day, the probability of the station being overhead the instance you read the slashdot article and looked up in the sky is pretty low.
Are you sure you wouldn't want a million Exanode beowulf cluster of 9.99 x 10^(100 x 10^(100 x 10^99999) Exahertz Processors, 2 x 10^1000000 way SMP? That would be a lot better, IMHO.
I dont usually take part in these freebsd/linux troll-quests, but who cares what is borrowed from whom? Really, neither freebsd or linux would be anything without borrowed code and using programs that weren't originally designed for that system. All those "ported linux programs" were most likely ported from other systems or had borrowed code in them as well. And another thing, most of these programs are not designed for a specific OS, you only assume they do because they come in the standard linux distro. My advice would be to keep your mouth closed (and your keyboard in your pants) whenever you feel the urge to spread FUD.
Well, it appears to be window maker. Its not like I run E or anything either. WM was just the most logical assumtion. I am using Afterstep BTW:-) Anyways, that wasnt really my point, its more of the fact that there wasnt anything that proved that they were running on Linux.
There is not extra looking needed. They are running on window maker. I do not use window maker, but I am pretty sure that it will compile under many systems. There aren't any distinguishing marks on the desktop (like a penguin), therefor you cant assume they run Linux. They would most likely be running Linux, but there is no evidence. Window maker != Linux
Yes, it is necessary for reverese engineering so our society can move forward, but I doubt this is our true motive. Most people today are ignorant and don't care where the world is going to end up in the future. If progressing was the true motive we wouldn't see things like the infamous copyright and patent systems that plague us today. Most people would rather better their own lives than generally make the world a better place. To these people I initiate the traditional 1 finger salute. Here's to you!
S390 I think, can run some 1300 copies of Linux reasonably, though I may get the number wrong. That would mean a price of about $400 per running copy of Linux(which translates to 1300 $400 PCs)
This is a very (very very very) inaccurate way of measuring processor speed. I could probably cram a bunch of copies of Linux reasonably on my Athlon 700, but does that say anything? It could have the processing speed of slide rule, but it could run. A 486 Can run Linux reasonably, does that make my computer equal to about 5, 6, 7 or 8 486s? The term "reasonably" is so broad that it could mean anything. The amount of guessing in your reasoning makes your findings utterly useless. I could pull a number out of nowhere and it would have just as much chance of being true as your 1300 Copies of Linux on a S390 = 1300 * $400 desktops.
So the mainframe, for some purposes, is *cheaper*
Yet again, your calculations are totaly baseless. $400 * 500 nodes of P2/233s could equal an S390 , but so could $400 * 1300 nodes of P90s. Those both could be less, more, or equal price/performance ratios, but nobody knows! Its anybodies guess, until someone actually does some expertiments on the matter.
You sure seem to be the optimist. Well, I doubt this plan will work. Here are some problems I see with it:
1)Online transactions are done in SSL. There is no way they will even know that you made a purchase let alone try to bill you for it.
2)Something of this magnitude would probably cost more than what they would earn. Keeping up with bandwidth requirements is bad enough.
3)If they want to implement this, they will have have an agreement with online retailers. This is NOT going to happen.
4)If this does happen (it will not), retailers that dont join up with AT&T will get blocked out from their service. AT&T will get sued and even a possible anti-trust thing will get going.
Does anyone know of any possible way that this plan could work?
If you bothered to read the article you would find this little tidbit of info in the first paragraph:
"That is not because it is particularly rare (titanium dioxide is the basis of white paint) but because it is hard to extract as a pure metal"
If you are true about the 8:1 aluminum to titanium ratio it won't make very much difference. I doubt we will exhaust 1% of the earth's surface worth of alimuminum in our lifespans (correct me if my out of this world guesstimate is wrong)White paint is everywhere. They could maybe even (possibly) recycle cans of old paint just to make titanium.
They are actually comparing it to itself. IIRC, the Crusoe will throttle back the clock speed when the processor is not being used to its maximum potential. This on the fly clock speed changing will not show any performance decrease compared to a Crusoe that is not using this feature.
Well, what you should have done in the first place was patent the use of "numbers on a card used pay for items from 'your name here'"© That way, you would be actually be making money off the crackers credit card fraud against you©
;
¥dont worry, I am actually not that dumb, I just play it on tv
May I ask, how could you be so stupid? Do you really beleive that we should just strip Cox and Torvalds of their positions just because their OS became popular? Its not their fault that it became popular, neither is it their fault that that people have become dependent on it©
Say, for instance, you were writting a killer app© This app became so popular that everyone and their brother were using it© Would you give up your rights to the development of the program just because a couple of dickhead users thought it would be cool for it to be controlled by a democratic board ¥*cough* ICANN *cough*?
BTW, if you have a problem with the way things are being ran, why don't you use Windows or something? If all you can do is bitch about the system, maybe you shouldnt be using it©

(excuse me bad speling plus gramar)
This research is all going towards me becoming the worlds smartest person and world domination!

Thats really nice for you, but would you mind sharing some of your findings?
Yah really, its not as if security is an issue! rotflmao!

It would be a good thing to keep fragmentation in check, but we shouldnt be lining the pockets of more companies© You could easily just have a TLD virtually regulate itself© This could be achieved through some sort of voting/complaints system, when it reaches a certain amount of complaints it would go under review by a real person© When under review, this person would view the complaints and actually go to the website/whatever services they are hosting and spew some justice© This seems sort of elaborate, but I think even the notion of this would prevent people from offending© This could probably be done easily with 1 person per TLD, and it wouldnt be that bad© It would be a lot more effective than huge prices© Nobody at all will be a ©biz if it costs $2000, so whats the point of having it? People could just get a ©net, ©org or ©com address for less and get more hits than with a ©biz©
Who cares about that? All I wanna know is if it can tell the difference between butter and "I can't believe it's not butter".
Sorry, I have just heard enough of those stupid Canadian dollar jokes to last a lifetime.
Its $20 US, you half-wit
Wow. Do you know what would be cool? A beowulf cluster of wives! Now that would get the q3a benchmarks goin'.

Hahhaha.. Deep Thought was the computer from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Thank goodness its not nascar, Blech!

The ladies you want to impress are either really young or really stupid if they will be disracted by shiny objects like that
