That's one of the themes of the BBC article, and it's so true on a variety of levels. I recall that, recently, the DC Metro (WMATA) had a big chunk of its budget cut because they allowed pro-marijuana ads on trains and buses.

The real stupid part? The metro serves a large number of people and is always in need of more money. So, in reality, they punished the people. Look for lots of punishment from an angry God, er, government because scientists feel differently about religion, environment, and politics in general.

-20GB hard drive (needed to play some Xbox1 games)
    -High definition AV cables

If you don't get that more expensive package, you *have* to spend at least another $25 for a memory card to save games. For the Xbox1, you absolutely needed the $25-$30 remote to play DVD movies. I suspect that the Xbox360 will require this.

If you didn't care about high def cables, Xbox Live, or features that need a hard drive, then you have saved $50 at this point. This seems more like a scam to rip people off than really offer them a cheaper package.

Now that's not the only thing that the kids are accused of doing, they also turned off the monitoring software (Apple Remote Desktop?) and even used it to monitor the admins. In addition, they're accused of using hacking tools to find the new admin password when it was changed from the password that was taped on the back of the machines.

Also, if you click on the little update link at the bottom of the story, you'll see that the kids were also found to be downloading pornography. Might sound innocent to some of you, but adults / the school can get in trouble for "allowing" them access to X-rated material.

Now, a third degree felony sounds harsh, but they still need some punishment. If they had stopped at using the password taped onto the back of the computers I'd feel sorry for them, but they were spying on admins and using other means to get the password once it was changed.

You would never see Halo (or any other FPS) as a flagship game for the big N.

Well, isn't Metroid Prime a flagship FPS? Have you played Eternal Darkness? It's not a first person shooter, but it's a mature horror game, better than the Resident Evil games, IMO. I thought the Gamecube was going to be great after this game, but apparently it was just an experiment on Nintendo's part (they effectively cancelled the sequel). In the years since then, I've acquired a PS2 that gets a lot of use, while my Gamecube collects dust.

If nintendo is going through such a downfall, why are they still making way more money than you or I will ever see?

They may still be making money, but how does it compare to years prior? They've alienated me (formerly a good customer) and lots of people I know. When enough people get sick of their crap, will the kiddie stuff be enough to keep them in the black? And no, I haven't outgrown Nintendo - they've stepped back. After typing this, I'm going to get back to playing Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Even the NES and SNES Zeldas felt more mature than Wind Waker. Long ago, Nintendo was about relatively neutral games, not kiddie games.

This kind of arrogance is often attributed to the downfall of Nintendo (though more so on a software basis). As N came to the top, they got greedy with their control on who could release hardware and also had ridiculous fees for being a developer.

With this in effect, suddenly hardware is going to be more expensive with less competition. With the PS3 and Xbox having basically the same game lineup, this could be part of keeps Sony at the top (assuming they don't do anything stupid like this).

4-1-9 Schemes frequently use the following tactics:

An individual or company receives a letter or fax from an alleged "official" representing a foreign government or agency.

An offer is made to transfer millions of dollars in "over invoiced contract" funds into your personal bank account.

You are encouraged to travel overseas to complete the transaction.

You are requested to provide blank company letterhead forms, banking account information, telephone/fax numbers.

You receive numerous documents with official looking stamps, seals and logo testifying to the authenticity of the proposal.

Eventually you must provide up-front or advance fees for various taxes, attorney fees, transaction fees or bribes.

Other forms of 4-1-9 schemes include: c.o.d. of goods or services, real estate ventures, purchases of crude oil at reduced prices, beneficiary of a will, recipient of an award and paper currency conversion.

Considering what it requires one to do (lots of illegal stuff), anyone suckered into one of these probably deserves to be taken.
