  1. Re:Corel Wordperfect is still around on Novell Completes Sale · · Score: 1

Actually, it was crap going on at the time surrounding several products and not just WordPerfect. The worst part wasn't that Microsoft was using undocumented APIs for an advantage, but that if someone else started to use them, Microsoft would remove those APIs to break their software. It's been a long time, so I don't recall all of the different packages that ran into issues, but it happened several times.

Here we are, less than 10 years since that initial announcement and PC games are mostly sold by services like Steam, GOG, and Impulse, services like Gametap are popular, and all three major consoles sell a lot of games via their online marketplaces. There is even a spiritual successor to the Phantom in the OnLive game system which is more or less a terminal server/VNC/Citrix client.

First of all, as has already been said, you may be violating a ton of policies as well as HIPAA by putting that machine on the network.

In most instances, IT has control of every piece of equipment that connects to the wire, even if they don't officially support the software or hardware. However, I know of plenty of exceptions to this rule. There are times when it is desirable to exclude IT from having access to a piece of equipment or server for a variety of reasons. Said equipment is generally supported by either a local department resource or an outside vendor directly. These arrangements are pretty much always in writing though. If you want to keep your server outside of IT control, you'll no doubt need to work that out with them.

By its very nature, having someone go undercover pretty much demands that some illegal activities are committed in order to get the information required to catch the bad actors before they do something worse. The difference here (if we believe Al and honestly it isn't like his story is really out there or anything) is that they were using an outside resource so they could walk away with clean hands.

Corporations don't get out of paying taxes because people that they pay money to (employees, other companies, etc) pay taxes. I don't get out of paying taxes because my mechanic pays taxes.
