I agree, I can whip out the GBA:SP on my 15min subway ride and play for a bit because the games load in a second, aren't insanely complicated to control and are fun.
Granted some of the nostalgia gets me (Zelda) but I can't remember the last time I had to even charge the damn thing.
The fact that it's much more portable than the hardback book I'm reading also helps. And I can play FF:TA with one hand if I don't find a seat.
I can very much see in the scenario you propose 90% of the people installing IE and MediaPlayer. All MS has to do is ask, "Do you want to be able to watch movies? Do you want to install MS's IE web browser?"
While yes it would be a choice and I suppose some people wouldn't install them, it would be more because of lack of knowledge than wanting to use some other software. And without a web browser what do you expect a new computer user to do to get Firebird? They'd have to have their computer nerd friend come over and do it for them. Just like they do now.
So yes it will be good to make MS not bundle these apps, I have to say that it will not change much at all.
Unless (now I'm just chaining thoughts) large OEM's like Dell, install the base MS OS, and include icons for "Install Netscape Browser" and "Install Winamp". But I think MS has sufficent weight to have these OEM's just include icons only for MS products. Maybe Dell could make their own brand of Mozilla. Interesting.
Get on top of this and I'd like a status report by yesterday::)
We need a defined Linux-look and feel that's not based on something developed by someone else
Well the problem with a defined look is that well it's a defined look. While we have so many choices you'll never have a defined look. Do we go with Englightment? Gnome? KDE? TWM? And then how do you make everyone use that?
So going towards the Windows UI and tweaking it along the way is possibly a good thing. Remember MS has spent millions probably on researching the User Interface for Dummies. If we want linux to be on the worlds' desktops you can't ignore MS and Apple's work.
But would OpenSource on the Spirit have been a good idea? NASA could have written it, used embedded linux, whatever then released the source after the fact.
I would imagine if some problem happened like what is happening they could release the debug data and quite literally pull in extra 1,000's of minds to work on the problem.
Rio's past players and products have a shitty track record though. I'll wait to see how long the Karma's last before investing. Great to hear it has FLAC support.
I read all these comments about people not doing well in school, not concentrating on a task. But what is it you would be doing if not sitting quietly?
I mean would you just bounce from book to drawing to a sprint around the house? Is there something that could hold your attention?
And for those of you with Adult ADHD do you find it hard to get into a task now? Like read a memo? Read the first paragraph and bounce off to do something else?
Computers seem like the last thing someone with ADHD needs since there's so much you can do on this one machine.
essentially doing a complete and highly detailed design before beginning any coding
(to be taken lightly) Because we all know that you're supposed to code and shoot guns from the hip, not sit back and spend more time planning than doing.
Planning ahead even a little bit can solve huge problems down the road. Doing a highly detailed design and plan will help you achieve goals with much more success.
I see this too often in projects.
Nerd 1: "Hey I got an idea" Nerd 2: "Let the coding begin!"
I think we all suffer from too much ADD if you ask me.
I never understood coding outside. The sun makes it hard to see a screen, so you'd have to find a perfect shady spot, then you'd have to go and find a table and chair comfortable enough to not get sore from coding for several hours.
Just leave work at work and enjoy doing outside things outside.
Yeah, there are no women because it's just in Iraq that girls don't really get that into gaming.
That's the ticket, continue to believe that in the West girls far out number guys at our gaming cafes. That's one way to make young geeky Iraqi teens want to be more like us.::)

I want my compass and a map
And lots of air support, laser weapons, and Mech suits.
You left a bit off your list, just filling it in.
Sooo, what should the consumer get when they purchase a Windows Operating System? A kernel?
Would OEM's just start bundling MS Windows Operating Environment?
Oh my, I just realized I wrote "Teeny boober"
::P
Are those different than Teen Bopper? Am I getting modded funny for the "boober" or the idea?
Done.
::)
Well partly done. I'm sure you could program a computer program to make Teeny boober songs in an afternoon.
@lyrics = "Baby, ooooo, love, ooooo, dance, oooo, uhuhuh";
You get the idea
I agree, I just got an old G3 to learn OS X with and I gotta say it's very slick.
If that's what you've been wanting from linux since 96 why would it be bad if we copied it?
And I don't mean that we should copy these interfaces pixel for pixel, but we could take it and make the improvements that each need.
We need a defined Linux-look and feel that's not based on something developed by someone else

LOL, that's hilarious.

Good idea? bad? why?
Must... resist... urge... to go on Godzilla-like rampage.
Probably why I never got too far in Sim City games either.
Rio's past players and products have a shitty track record though. I'll wait to see how long the Karma's last before investing. Great to hear it has FLAC support.
Play All Your Base on loop?
Now that's evil!
And despite what movies tell you, aliens are not evil, just misunderstood.
We all know gamers have the strongest wrists in the world....
Does this hyperfocusing occur regularly? Like on a daily basis or will you find yourself hyperfocused for only every once in awhile?
thanks for writting though.
I remember someone back a couple of years was caught in JPL's computers. Maybe there are some backdoors still? ::)
Shotgun first drive! Of course I realize it's not like an RC car, but I can imagine right?

Any responses are appreciated
hehehe, that is pretty sweet, nerd kudos goes out to you and the 386!
Every time there's a story about new CPU's or something speed related there are posts like this.
What's your point? That we should stop making faster CPU's? Why do you care?
Here's the post I want to see:
Well that's nice, but my 286 that runs Minix is great! you don't really need that 700mhz proc, it's a total waste.
Last time I checked, when a new system comes out you can still play your old one.
That and with the popularity of the PS2, you will be seeing games coming out for it a couple of years into the PS3 era.
And a few years is also a DAMN long time! Unless you're a 500 year old being getting 3-5 years out of a device seems like a good deal to me.
I mean why get the PS3, in just a few more years the PS2012 will be out and you'll have wasted your money on the PS3.

Soo that averages out to ~63% greater chance of me losing the damn thing!

I don't understand.
The GUI is right there in front of you. You don't need the code to steal a GUI.
MS did it to Apple with Windows without their code.
