That's pretty nice. But I'd like to see the benchmark for BF1942 on a Mac, or HL2, Doom3, etc. It's not performance, it's about games. It'll never happen but DirectX for a Mac would be killer cool. Yes... killer cool.
If you can't tell the difference between a 1.5 and 3.0GHz you must be using one of those old style brains. Personally with faster CPU's I can work even faster!!! Hopefully they'll hit 1TerraHz so it can more evenly match my brain.
Man just think of the cluster $3000 could get you. Let me just flesh out my dream systems.
1 head node: 2.4C P4 overclocked to 3.3 $175 1gig PC3200 Corsair RAM $300 Some insanely large HDD $100 Abit Springdale mobo $100 Case & Antec Powersupply $120 Nvidia 5600 Ultra(would like ATI but not for linux) $215 DVD-Rom $40
Other nodes: 3 Athlon 2500+ Barton ~$300 3 Nforce2 mobos ~$300 6 256MB Sticks of PC2700 RAM $240 3 cases & PS ~$250 3 Smaller HDD ~$300 1 Cheapo vid card for installs on each $30 3 CD-Rom $60
Linux on each: $0 Total: $2490
Okay, so it's not quite $3000, but I bet you can have plenty of fun with that setup. I forgot a switch, add that. All mobos come with built in NIC's. I think that's a good deal.
So it's up the librarian to determine what should and should not be filtered if a teen asks them?
If I wanted to visit a site that gave alternate views on history for a paper (like I once did back in the day. A paper on the Black Panthers, I used a museum of African American history in baltimore. They painted a rather different picture of the Panthers than what you'll read about.) would the librarian unblock it?
They're being very stupid on this one. They say they don't want their "art" to be chopped up and hence ruined. So what about shuffle on my CD player you want that taken away too?
These people make me sick, glad I didn't goto that mess of a radiohead show here in NY a few weeks ago.
Can you imagine a painter sitting in a gallery and whenever someone came in and looked at his painting from a different angle than he wanted; he'd come running over crying like a bitch and force you to stand, 85.5degrees from center, clamp open your eyelids so you can't not look at any of it and keep you there for 1:15?
I'm done buying any music from the RIAA sponsored pukes. Before I was iffy, but now I'm certain I can find better, free as in expression, and cheap as in price bands to listen to.
Nforce1 & 2 in the PC arena are made for AMD CPU's. The XBox using an Intel P3 with an integrated Geforce3 Core. So this would be probably zero help for xbox-linux.
I highly doubt the decsion to name their project went so maliciously as, "Let's name it after starcraft and warcraft, that way we can get the recognition those games already have!!"
More likely since warcraft and starcraft are huge brands that everyone thinks of when RTS is mentioned, FreeCraft was just the first obvious name to pop into the geek mind for a Free Open Source RTS.
You make it sound like they're exploiting Blizzard. What exactly do these developers gain from doing this in their free time? Some recognition amoung fellow geeks? Maybe the chance that some company will see their skills and hire them? What they do gain is experience, but I guess we should sue them for that back too!
Riding the coattails? Yeah, they're really racking in the dough now. Man I should start my own free open source project cause I too want to be filthy rich!
I'm not sure, since there haven't been any released numbers concerning video editing. I'm doubting there will be any until your editing software is rewritten to take advantage of 64.
You can already get Opterons, but it's not a desktop chip. The release date for Athlon64 just got moved up a month to August, so you'll have a 64bit chip and you can run a 64bit Linux, but you're not going to see anything earthshattering as far as performance yet.
True consoles are out there, but they've been out there for a very long time. The PC game market is not shrinking and neither are the consoles. The entire game market continues expanding period.
I don't see any trend targetting primarily for consoles, in fact the trend is to market to everyone I see more and more games that are availible for all platforms and consoles. I'll spare you a long list but here are a few, Splinter Cell, every movie based game, Hulk, Enter the Matrix, Spiderman, Midnight Club 2, Soul Caliber 2(no PC).
Then you have games that are on only one console and only the PC, GTA: Vice City, Halo (eventually).
The point is PC gaming is not going to diminish and neither are consoles. They both attract different gamers.
What made you buy the hybrid? Just curious as I believe it was popular mechanics that just did a feature where they drove the hybrid and the non corss country. I think the Hybrid ended up getting an average 6 or 7 more MPG. They then calculated gas saved and it'd take an awful lot of cross country trips just to make up for the ~$1,400 premium that the hybrid cost.
Basic research? If this is basic, what pray tell is complex?::)
Often times where research will lead is unknown, seems people have to know nowadays what exactly the finish line is for research. If it's too open ended they'll dismiss it. Well, to those I'd like to point out that the reason for living is still quite open ended, so sit back and relax a lil bit, let those who want to think and explore do just that.
I'm sure someone will point out that often they're thinking and exploring with tax payer money, which is true. But at least they're working for the public, and not some private institution which might come up with something to benefit the public but only as a side note to benefitting the business first.
Planetside works on the assumption that your body is worthless and you can regenerate in new body when the first gets hacked and blown up good.
Buggy at first, supposedly been getting better.
Fist of death!
Heh, it makes me laugh to think of a geek grunting like Tim Allen on Home Improvement around his PC.
More Power!!! Urh Urh Urh (spelling?)
Maybe they should've just gotten an ATI 9800 Pro to do the rendering instead of all those loud and expensive boxen ::)

I'm kidding by the way,
1 TerraHz is no where near enough

Except of course when it comes to games. Not quite sure why I'd want to pony up for an ATI 9800 on a Mac. Q3 at 400Fps maybe? I dunno.

:)
Enjoy, wonder if a 64bit compiled HL2 and Doom3 would offer any benefits

I'd say that BF Vietnam will have no problems, considering it will be using a new different rendering and sound system.
That means much improved physics and models. Just watch the HL2 video from E3 to get yourself excited for a 64player game based on next gen engines.
I'm drooling all over myself
The MSN searches you!
(I find those soviet russia sayings waaay too funny, and now have tried my own variation. My apologies.)
Simple, X/Cygwin in rootless mode ssh -X over to a spare old box, start up your lil window manager (I like fluxbox) and boom! Linux on Windows.
(Don't start a 3D game while having an X/Cygwin session open though, you'll lose it for some reason, at least under XP)

I like the giant mutant bunny though. Looks kinda like a rootabegger (sp?)
Maybe it is the tone of your posts, they sound like marketting to me.
"Ever since I got my segway, I sold my car, my wife, my dog, I lost weight, and won the lotto."
Apologies if you really are sincere.
Seriously, this guy pops up everytime there's a segway article.
How much do they pay you? Please tell me they pay you.
