Jesus... I got so mad about smokers and non smokers that I got pulled over by the cops for speeding so far from the topic that I was not even on the same map page.
Nicotine (the nice stuff which makes me hate less people) is one of the cocktail of harmful sh!t in cigarettes. There you go... "one of".
Take everything away from a cigarette except the nicotine and what have you got? Yup... a harmful cigarette. Take everything away including the nicotine and what have you got? You're burning fucking joss sticks.
Add in another ingredient to have a similar effect?

Having a non smoking part of a restaurant is like having a non peeing part of a pool.
I have recently given up smoking (one week ago). I had given up before for two years but started again because I was dating a smoker (what can I say... the body outweighed the smoking and I am shallow). I recently broke up with her (she turned out to be a psycho and I turned out to be not as shallow as I thought I was) and so I have quit again.
I hate non smokers with a passion, especially the ones who have recently quit and start telling people they can't smoke and they can't do this and that and the other... I hate bars which ban smoking at the bar "so the bar staff do not have to breathe smoke" when really do not care about the bar staff, they are just protecting themselves against law suits that may turn up in the future.
What I hate most of all is that we had one guy in our old office who was not a smoker and because of him we had to have a non smoking office and go smoke out in the cold.
I am all about freedom and deomocracy and not picking on minorities... smokers are becoming a minority and they are getting pretty oppressed. Let's just let them do what the fuck they like to themselves and if the non smokers do not want to breathe their smoke then they can go the the crappy McBars which ban smoking.
Yup... one week in and I still hate everyone... I never was much good at quitting.
I do a lot of charity work and some guy called Martin was nice enough to set up a site called UKrag (http://www.ukrag.net./ I was involved in the forums and even had a role moderating a forum. As it was a phpBB forum I also offered whatever help he needed to keep the thing running and improve it.
Martin made a bunch of his mates admins and moderators and started getting very controlling about what was said on the forums and would arbitarily delete or mod posts at will.
So anyway, one day he starts deleting some of my posts where I have pointed out that he should be a little more open with how the financial aspects of the site run and how the moderation policy work... he brushes me under the carpet and hopes the questions will go away.
I start questioning the moderation policy and start asking for some way of appealing against decisions... my account gets deleted. I know that I should just start my own site but he got there first and has shed loads of user generated content (including my own contributions) which he has decided he now owns.
Now my point is that this guy, although a great bloke for starting the site in the first place, now owns and runs the sole resource for student fundraisers in the UK. He controls everything and there is no transparancy in what he does.
If you want to see the site I urge you to go to http://www.ukrag.net/ and have a look for yourselves at the resources that Martin controls with no safeguards at all.
There is an add on bit of kit sold in the UK called Cobra Connex where you can control pretty much anything on our car via SMS or a webportal. If you get your car stolen just send a txt to it and it will tell you where it is so you can go round with your mates and do some beating... this far better than the stupid old cops having the info... plus it is easier to play pranks on your girl if she borrows your car... disable it and then when she rings you to say that the AA(A) will be there in 20 mins just wait 19 and fire it up again. You can even remotely start it in the morning so that you do not have to get in to a cold car in the winter and it can send you texts if your girl breaks the pre set speed limit.
I'm not really convinced after reading the parent post (well, the one line on the topic) that children are going to be less creative. I think by giving them so many channels of things to do, they're forced to be as creative. I look at when I was growing up and the things I would do. I had the internet, playstations, etc... Very dynamic items that were fun if I wasn't creative. In fact, I remember spending a lot of time inside, finding light guns for a good game of cops and robbers with friends. Now, when I look at my little brother, he spends a good deal of his time playing his rubickscube. If he's not doing that, he's on the beach, fishing with a net. Really, the only time he's doing anything similar to what I used to do is when he goes outside and rides his bike. The fact is, he really does have to be creative because he has so few options at his fingertips that most of us didn't have when we were kids. Because of that, I really have to disagree with ChrisF79.
DISCLAIMER: As neither the parent article or my own had any major facts or verifiable data other than some loose anecdotal evidence I must remind you to form your own opinion from facts, figures or actual experience rather than following the opinion of some ill informed half wit like myself.
Or, even better than getting paypal to do it, why not let http://www.justgiving.com/ do it as they handle this sort of thing in a safer and more accountable way (you cannot get your grubby little hands on the money, only the charity can) and actually add money to what is donated (by stiffing the inland revenue or uncle sam) rather than charging you.
Giving up a pint of blood to the Red Cross is not going to cost you anything other than a sore arm and a slight feeling of lethargy however any blood they don't use is sold to hospitals and the money they make is as good as a cash donation from you.
Sure, give cash and whatever you can afford but include a pint of your meaty red stuff into that list of things you can afford to donate.
Maybe it was all the cynical people logging on ang giving each other mod points for being informative and posting the same point over and over again that it is a marketing ploy.
The wifi covers a large area and it is not assuming the people who are swimming out of the area will have their laptops over their shoulder but it is making sure that when they get somewhere safe they can contact their loved ones and let them know.
It also allows agencies in the areas who may not have phone lines and mobiles to be able to keep in touch with the outside world... lots of aid groups may not have access to sat phones or be able to afford the cost.
I was unfortunate enough to be in the US on 11/9/2001 and at the time a lot of the long distance and international lines were jammed however through email my girlfriend and I were able to contact her brother who was in the area and he was able to relay lists of people who were safe to us so we could contact their folks back home, it also meant that I was able to let my folks know that I was OK and that I had not taken my flight.
Good on them... lots of people can get their hands on computers and generators and bottled water but there are very few people who can get decent comms into an area like this and they rose to the responsibility of providing it 'pro bono'.
Skype is currently the only provider to allow calls to landlines and cellphones
I have been using the gizmo project for about a month now and it allows me to make cheap calls all over the place to landlines, mobiles and other gizmo and SIP users.
Published information is not by default public information. It does not give everyone the right to copy and distribute it as they wish, it is done under the terms of the licence issued by the publisher.
Unpublished work is no different from published work except that the licence is not granted at all, as with the contents of your hard drive so if you are going to break publishers licence agreements you might as well just take up theft.
You actually do not have any rights to someone elses property at all, you only have the licence that they have granted you just as if you granted me a licence to the contents of your hard drive for one week that would not mean that Microsoft would have a right to access your hard drive and copy and disseminate it and neither would I, I would merely have permission to access it for the duration of the licence granted by you.
What you do is start off with one machine and set it up exactly how your image is going to be... load drivers, updates and software and make all those little OEM customisations.
Then you run a tool calls sysprep to remove all the SIDs and image it.
So if you pick up a nasty during this process (quite likely if you are not on a secure network and do not include AV software on the image) then it will be included in the image and copied to all new machines.
The government did it with thousands of computers on the laptops for teachers scheme which was nice because teachers have enough problems with IT without shipping them a laptop with Blaster onboard.
Except no, in the face of no scarcity, they now create scarcity artificially by "pretending" the electronic files are actual tangible books or audio CD's. No Utopia for yoo!
Oooh... lets just have libraries giving stuff away so that you don't have to buy it yourself.
The idea of a library is so that people can have access to the material for reference and if they want a copy for themselves they go to a shop and buy it.
Fine, if the content is out of copyright then it could be made available without DRM but for content which has been created to raise revenue then there is little point of allowing libraries to give it away.
In a perfect world... yadda yadda yadda... you do not have a right to the information in a book any more than I have the right to take a copy of all the information on your hard drive.
Point 4 is particularly true for me. In my old job I was always seen as a flight risk because it was clear that I was able to get other jobs and whenever I pushed for some personal development they saw it as the same as me retyping my CV on company time.
The irony of it was that I was really committed to the company and was very upset when they hired a replacement and then sacked me illegally, the fact that they had to pay me off and I walked into a dream job where I am valued and feel secure and am paid nearer what I am worth is a bit of a softener but it still should not have been.
Some companies are bad companies and it does not matter if you are certified or not as the good companies will know it if you have paper or not.
Yeah, the trend started when the standards of the articles on/. took a radical nosedive and users found themselves to be bitching rather than bitching *about* something, just bitching for the sake of it.
So I called up Force9 (a UK internet service provider) last night because a mate had let me know that my website (which I run from my own webserver) was down and after a bit of diagnostics I had discovered that my IP address had changed.
I was told that the guy who had put notes on the system that I wanted a static IP address had failed to put the order in several months in advance when I had taken out the package so I had been on a dynamic IP address (which, by pure luck, had stayed static up until now).
The guy in the call center told me that the guy who had made the mistake was no longer with the company and that he could order the static IP which would be actioned on my next billing cycle and no earlier because to do something like that was against company policy.
So, to recap... they did something wrong, supplied the wrong product in fact, but will not make any effort to rectify the problem until my next billing cycle IN 10 DAYS which leaves me with my webserver pretty much down for 12 days (DNS changes when the little blighter settles down to the static).
I pointed out that I was disgusted and the guy on the phone held his ground because he was not behind a counter I could jump over to kick his ass but safe on the end of a phone line where the most I could do was watch his smug face on the webcams. http://portal.f9.net.uk/webcams/
So it does not matter if the call center is in Bangalore India, Buttf*ck USA or anywhere else on this earth so long as they are just out of reach of people like me who might one day make the news because we are on the roof of a tall building with a high powered rifle and a direct line of sight to the exits of the call center.
I am English... therefore I speak English with a native accent.
Americans, by virtue of being American, are never going to be speaking English with a native accent unless they speak with an English accent. It is very similar to the way that the Welsh speak English with a non native accent, the Scottish speak English with a non native accent and most English people speak other languages which are not English with a non native accent.
See? It's not too hard to understand is it? Americans are not native English speakers, the nation adopted the language a couple of hundred years ago when the native population no longer had control of the country.
Bet Perfect 10 still want to be listed on Google. Do we really care if a silly site wants some free publicity off of the back of Google? Hey, how about I sue someone else who is in the media lots on some tossy little technicality to get my not very well known name in the papers...
