However, with packet-switched phone networks replacing traditional circuit switching, that distinction is becoming more blurred.
It seems to me the analogy is a valid one. Any switching means that there are multiple points where your unencrypted conversation can be intercepted. Even back to the early days of a telephone, where such interception was required via an operator in order to make a connection. You may have expectation of a point-to-point communication, but it's never actually that (obviously excluding the pioneering work).
This further supports my theory that all it takes to be modded insightful on/. is to quote from or even link to Wikipedia. Several GP posts were all marked offtopic, even though all were related to the topic of poor usage. But parent tosses in a Wikipedia quote or reference, and blam! Not only is it abruptly on topic, it instantly insightful!
Moving to full interruptability and virtual memory for the GPU is a huge step, but as new GPUs with full support for interruptability begin to catch on, and software moves from DirectX 9 to 10, the benefits will become more and more apparent. That's as may be, but I have some really great DX9 games that run 10-12fps/slower/ on Vista. These are not new top-end games; yet older and slower WinXP systems run them faster than newer hardware on Vista. You can take your theoretical improvements and enjoy them; I'll stick to running a system that performs well/today/.
If you are friends of uncles/aunts/parents of chinese gov officials in power, you can send them your vacation/wedding photos in flickr;).
Then let their nieces/nephews/children explain why they can't see your vacation photos.
If they want info on stuff you could send them informative links on wikipedia or other similar sites.
Just do lots of harmless stuff like that and sit back;). This assumes that the officials in power are subject to the same restrictions as everyone else...
Roleplaying abounded... too bad NWN2 didn't have Linux support right out of the box, killed off both servers when the admins couldn't upgrade, but the players wanted the new toys. You might want to take another look at the NWN2 scene in the coming months. A lot of RP-heavy worlds are getting ready to begin their beta phases within another month or so; and the expansion pack coming out this fall should also bring in some additional numbers/interest for multiplayer. At this point, the servers can run on Linux, via WINE...

Right. And all cops are abusive assholes with inferiority complexes. And all priests are pedophiles. And all accountants are embezzlers. And all...
That's the spirit lad! All female teachers sleep with male students, all farmers have sex with goats, all democrats are communists, and all republicans are nazis. Keep going, you're on a roll!
I feel compelled to glance at the person I'm talking to, but I use my brain and resist the urge. I will never understand the people I see staring at their passengers for one or more seconds at a time while driving.
Did you ever wonder what goes through a person's mind when they make a post like this? Is it, "I'm just going to think of something random to post"? Or is it even worse -- they somehow thing their comment is appropriate to the subject at hand?
I performed a simple test. I opened linuxtoday.com in firefox, internet explorer, and safari. I ignored the perpetual Microsoft advertisements plastered in the right corner of the linux web site. I then ctrl-clicked on each of the first four articles, opening them in tabs. I followed the same procedure in each. I then closed the application, and measured the difference in total system memory usage:
Safari: 51M
Internet Explorer: 34M
Firefox: 28M
Firefox also had about 12 different RSS bookmark feeds loaded; Safari had 3 it looked like, and IE had none.
I'm advocating the construction of a future in which we don't slaughter each other anymore. We are human beings, not lions or baboons. We're able to exchange knowledge to better ourselves and thereby avoid conflict through negotiation and compromise. You vastly overestimate humankind.
I opened Firefox, visited three web pages opened in tabs.
I opened Safari, did the exact same thing with the same three pages.
I closed Firefox, captured memory usage delta.
Same for Safari.
Subjectively, Safari loaded pages slightly faster.
Objectively:
Firefox: 45 MB memory used. This includes about 14 RSS feeds in my bookmark toolbar that are not present in Safari.
Safari: 83 MB memory used.
I've used something similar -- requiring a question that can only be answered by people with a genuine interest in the forum/site they are registering for. I have gone from 7-12 spam registrations a day, down to zero [spam regs] since doing so, while people who are legitimately registering still get through.

Whats the hell are you talking about?
You just said your running the same thing he is! Firefox with adblock. He just happens to use a different filterset (and felt the need to mention it) while Fedora is an distribution of an operating system. If you didn't know the latter you should really ask yourself why you're here. When did I mention Fedora? He is running four plugins (Filterset.G Updater I assume, Adblock, No Flash, No Script) . I am running one different plugin (Adblock+). We see the same results. All better now?

Sure it's a great comment in that context, but the code is so bad that if I saw it in an application I was using, I would immediately find a different vendor/library to use;)
I heard an NPR story on this issue. A study found not only that most DVR users do play the commercials, but even users who self-reported skipping ads always or almost always, actually watched far more ads than they thought. I've find that I sometimes start doing something else when the commercial starts... thus forgetting to skip the commercials (about half of the commercials for any given recorded show). On the other hand, I think it's safe to say that any 'high suspense' shows will have a much higher rate of skipped commercials.
England 1740, industrial starts. Could we say ends 1985 for the UK. Now consider the birth of modern France (1795), Germany(1860), Italy (1870), USA (picking the Civil War 1865). They seem to coincide quite well. And you don't have shout to show how clever you are. Good to see you know the dates, but I'm not sure I understand how this implies that borders are a product of the industrial age? Borders have existed throughout recorded history; this is where my confusion comes in.
Oh, there it is! Phew. I stand with my faith in the basic universal ugliness of sites fully restored.
This can't be a real web site. Where are the ugly colors, the Flash, the heavy graphics, for the gods' sakes, WHERE ARE THE ADS?!

Oops. I meant "instant Insightful!".
Fair enough; thanks for the info.

That was my thought as well, but the article says that he had been trying to conceal the camera with his hands...
But I suspect unions even more. Most likely, they are concerned about the jobs of their members, who maintain the copper networks.
On the other hand, protecting would-be whistleblowers is one of the few legitimate uses of a union.I opened Firefox, visited three web pages opened in tabs. An article claiming a linux flavor was better than windows was found in a linux 'trade journal', authored by a long-time linux admin?
Stop the presses.
