He was the only candidate who doesn't support, or even have a clear stance on free software. Not that that's the most important quality in a president, but it would have been nice.
As a fellow Slashdotter, I also care about technology issues. But at the same time realize they will have to take a back seat while there are active special intrest groups that believe the end (one world Muslim, or one world Communism) justifies the means (violence).
Items like hammers, bottled water, glow sticks, and M&Ms are all on preapproved lists of items that allow an officer a more expeditious method to circumvent a suspect's rights. Without such lists of normal everyday items, that make virtually everyone a criminal suspect, an officer would be required to follow the spirit of the law regarding warrants, evidence, and probable cause.
Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Most people consider that guns are weapons, bongs are drug paraphernalia, and themselves to be citizens with rights.
Unreasonable people consider hammers are weapons, bottled water is drug paraphernaila, and themselves to be above the law.
Like Martha Stewert, what the hell do they have to gain by doing this? They are already as rich as anyone needs to be. His net gain is probably the equivalent of me finding a penny on the street.
He didn't get to where he is now by himself. The very same club of "friends" that helped him, will require that he continues to "go along". Jobs is no Serpico
Isn't part of this what a lot of people say is required to have a "fair and balanced" discussion?
Nope, "fair and balanced" would be to report the news, the facts, the events, and let the viewers make their own conclusions. Requiring that America is always, every time, without fail, to be portrayed as the "enemy" is not reporting, it's propaganda.
Haven't you every wondered why there are so many clueless posters on Slashdot? It's because many of them get their "news" from sources that omit specific facts and details, in order to present biased conclusions. Then posters come here thinking they know the "truth", and procede to demonstrate how ignorant they are.
The 2 points given in the summary, that of normal court hours and reasonable notice > 24 hours, are both weak arguments. I suppose we shouldn't assume that just because we know the MAFIAA lawyers are bad guys, that lawyers on the other side aren't also bad guys.
It's not like the universe owes us a 50/50 equal distrubution of good and bad lawyers.
Or maybe the judges read them as is, wondered why the motion made no sense because of the "missing" page and rejected it because of that?
The article has a picture that clearly shows the location of the sticking point, that shows how pages could be opened partway as normal, but not fully read without breaking the mark point.
Perhaps your personal experience with pages stuck together is more... substansive?
I imagine that China, like other Asian countries, would have a relativly slower adoption and saturation rate than the US simply because of the language specific 3rd party programs and support getting to market.
Who needs Vista right now to do something they can't do in XP, or whatever else they are currently using. Adoption everywhere will be slow, but probably steady as older systems become more difficult to support over time, unless there is some paradigm shift.
Haven't you ever had a little lapse in judgement, when the job pressure was on, and when your emotions were running strong, during a small time of the month? No? Then I don't want to see any more smart aleck replies, GO TO HELL.
Recent propaganda efforts have shifted focus to inventions, in order to promote Russian pride, or spread historical doubt, or who knows what they think they are doing. There's another nice video on youtube regarding their 1940s invention of gas powered running boots, kept hidden for years as a top military secret.
In cases of another game activity, gambling, there have been numerous precedents that show just how complex and convoluted it can be to impliment unfair taxation.
Do you have a record of every poker hand (won and loss), or every slot machine pull? total winnings and losses over a four hour session? over a day? when you cash out? What it often comes down to is a corrupt definition of proof. In REAL court cases even fastidiouly documented logs of winnings and losses have been used by the IRS to prove winnings, but then the same papers would be dissmissed for proving losses.
The bottom line is that if you impliment a corrupt and unfair method of taxing citizens, then you can expect everyone participating (government, companies, and individuals) to live up to a similiarly corrupt and unfair methods of avoidance.
I read that same phrase with skepticism too. It would be more accurate to say consumers want their content to "just work", and to work on all their devices. All the hardware and software restrictions only serve to lockout one type of person, the type willing to pay instead of pirate.
To avoid saying the market is always right, I will simply say it's right 99% of the time. So when a special intrest group imposes it's will upon everyone, by coersion instead of persuasion, then the converse principal comes into play, that monopolies are always bad, or at least 99% of the time.
1) Spread FUD about competitors
2) Buy legislators, or wait for FUD saturation to accrue to the point where shameless politians will knowingly doing the wrong thing because it will appear that they are "caring" or "taking action"
3) Monopoly Profit!
For example, take the "alternative" bag industry, spreading FUD about plastic bags being bad for the enviroment. They fail to mention that the total paper process actually mixes more chemical contaminints into the enviroment, but somehow people start believing the overly simplistic "plastic bad" and "paper good" mantras. What follows are monopoly laws that force everyone to fuck the enviroment, in order to line the pockets corporations, so that the ignorant populace can continue to feel sanctimonious over the "evil" deniers.
My personal opinion is not to blame the corrupt polititians, they aren't dictators, they were elected by people. And not to blame corporations, they can't make you buy their products, their products are purchased by people. But to blame the people that are content being ignorant so they can continue to follow their "faith" (enviromentalism, communism, appleism, liberalism, islamo-fascism, etc...) And last but not least, some blame for the rest of us that tolerate all the intolerant behavior of the preceding groups of religious nuts.
House Panel: Why did Google 'airbrush history?'
This choice of title says it all, with its inciting headline and implication of guilt, that avoids describing the actual situation.
I know, I know... reporters aren't supposed to interview people, or do research, or even report speculative rumors in a responsible manner. Inflammatory headlines and conspiracy politics is the name of the game. Months ago, Google replaced the low-resolution images, that were acquired post-haste post-Katrina, for an older set of high-resolution images. You can still view the low-resolution set via Google Earth.
Nothing to see here, move along... unless you would like to jump on the politcal mudslinging bandwagon, and insert a Bush, 6 years, FEMA, hates black people remark. *sigh*
People keep referring to Linux and Linux-based distributions with this 'GNU' thing in the name? What's up with that?
The summary is regarding a set of applications that can be used on a Windows operating system. Linux is the main part of one open source OS, and is not an application designed to run on Windows. GNU on the other hand refers to many open source software applications.
The goal is to promote the use of the open source model, and freedom of use, not any one application or OS over any other.
What it doesn't explain is why Slashdot has been running so many stories direct from the Sony marketing department lately...
Slashdot hosting and editors aren't free, you insensitive clod!
Ranting makes people feel tough and in control, so go ahead and rant all you want about Sony rootkits, DRM, and viral marketing, but whatever you do, don't stop buying their products.
I don't want to spoil anything, but the current (or recent) series incorporated a number of significant universe changes based upon where they want to go in the future. And not just for the spin-off series that starts humans off from scratch, but for the planned MMORPG where certain races would be too powerful or disruptive. Kind of explains the resurgance of the Goa'uld as they can be a very balanced opponent race to humans.
Lawyers aren't sueing file sharers pro bono, and new DRM isn't being developed by the
open source community.
Guess who is really supporting the RIAA & MPAA?
Who buys their music CDs with rootkits?
Who buys their movie DVDs with DMCA protected Macrovision?
Who buys every new Blueray, new HD-DVD, and new Defective-By-Design device?
If you aren't willing to put your money where your mouth is, then stop whining about every 10 year old getting sued.
How?
Buy your downloaded music without DRM.
Buy your CDs with the 'Audio Disc' label on them, no auto running rootkits.
Buy audio players that don't have support for DRM. (yes, this even includes that cult of
fruit, stop swallowing Steve's Kool-Aid)
But what about movies on disc?
Well, if we had all followed the above steps regarding music, but for movies, then we
wouldn't be in this current mess. We made our bed, now we have to lay in it, and the sooner
we start, then the sooner it will get fixed.
It's obvious that GNU/Linux is a woman.
She's high maintenance, expects everything to be given to her for free, and no matter what goes wrong... it's your fault.
It's funny, please don't mod me down, just be content that I'll be going straight to hell.
I only realized after posting that my post may be misunderstood. Some might think I was impling that pictures of naked people was the target being threatened. Not so, the ideal being threatened here is free speech, of all types of speech.
An example would be the armbands again, they weren't just for jews, but also used for homosexuals, communists, social democrats, criminals, foreigners, work slackers, etc...
There is one reason to separate out a group,
so that in the future you can discriminate against that group.
Whether you want all citizens to register their firearms, only later to round them up for disposal.
Or whether you want all citizens of a particular type to wear an armband, only later to round them up for disposal.
What I'd really love to see is a standard data file format for describing these puzzles so I can share them and/or use other peoples' puzzles as input to my scripts. But I don't have THAT much free time, really...;)
My solver uses a simple XML format, so that it could easily grow elements for any future features, without obsoleting older sudoku collections. But I think I prefer doing the pen-and-paper format of daily papers.:)
The interesting thing is, on some test puzzles that were marked difficult it took remarkably few recursions to solve while some that were marked simple took a lot longer.
That makes sense, as ratings are based on difficulty for a human to solve.
A difficult Sudoku might involve identifing a complex relationship in order to solve it logically, without guessing. Where as a simple Sudoku might involve only identifing simple logical relationships, but may have numerous possibilities that would increase the time of a brute force technique.
In order to reach the pockets of compressed air, found far beneath the surface of the ground, it would be neccessary to drill and destroy the surrounding enviroment.
Or we could just make our own compressed air by burning coal or oil, which would essentially use the compressed air like a type of energy transmitting device, like a battery. While converting energy stored one way, to energy stored another way is wasteful, I think it would be a fair tradeoff because of that nice bumper sticker that let's one drive in the commute lane
