I wonder how much energy would be saved if Microsoft puts out a patch that forces monitors to shut down.
I apologize for being ignorant on the subject. I always see winxp computers in computer labs with the XP logo screensavers going on indefinitely (I'm assuming the maintainers/admins are to blame). But if they were set by default to suspend the monitors and the admins don't do anything, a lot of energy could be saved.
A friend of mine filed bankruptcy a while back. The court website has his name which shows up on the first page of a google search of his name. They won't do anything about it. He didn't put it online yet it's there.
You realize OpenOffice is Sun? So you are comparing Sun with Sun. I think most of the angst comes from that it doesn't ask, you just find out after the fact (I know great setup for a joke!).
It's about hot swapping a battery. I have a 2.5 year old macbook pro and the battery needs replacement (holds charge for 10 minutes). I know the new batteries are better but I don't want that to force me to get a new computer.
I agree with you a 100%. But I would guess most people don't know how an appliance (kitchen for argument's sake) works, and they don't care. It cleans dishes, who cares how it works. I think computers aren't "computers" (like in the 90s maybe) anymore, it's an appliance that checks email and plays solitaire. I'd even venture and say that's why one pays (MS or Apple); it's so that one doesn't need to care how it works.
I went through the same thing at newegg. I canceled out of the verification (they make it look like you are canceling the order but you're opting out and you can still order).
The reason I don't want to use it? Because I'm guessing it's just another tracking method for some kind of advertisement.
I hate it when legitimate companies do things that look like phishing.
I'm just happy it has no wondows button. I know it's stupid, but I've been meaning to by a linux laptop but I haven't because it would infuriate me to see that button on it!...
I had verizon. I hated the phone lockdown. So I switched to Midwest Wireless. They were awesome. They didn't mess with the phones. They were friendly. If you canceled or got a new phone they would prorate the cancellation penalty (If you sign a 2 year contract, and cancel after 1 year, you would only pay half the penalty, etc). Alltel bought Midwest Wireless. I can't get google calendar notifications (until very recently) anymore. Not so friendly. I was pondering leaving Alltel.
It's full circle, if Verizon buys Alltel, I'm back with Verizon.
You don't have to spend $400 on a burner. As I recall, I only spent around $50-60 each for my CD-RW and then DVD+-RW burners. I was talking about blu ray player/burner.
~ $50 is reasonable, anything more is not
I give up. Things are going to change too fast. I can't see myself buying any movies on any physical media. About the only think I see of use anymore is storage media and only if it's cheap (very important). I don't even burn CDs/DVDs to give large files (all legal) to people anymore (unless it's to mail). I let them borrow one of many flash drives.
Yeah I'm not (as just a consumer) investing in $400+ players (or burners) that are going to be superseded in 6 months.
I didn't know that was practiced...
They can't put cameras in the bathroom. If you have to email you spouse or browse for porn or something go the the bathroom and use the phone then turn it off.
If an employee wants to screw an employer they are going to do it. There is something to treating employees professionally, because otherwise the employer is just fostering resentment and hurting themselves in the long rung with lost talent.

I'm glad you got the joke
Yeah, like a dishwasher doesn't mean the thing plugged into the wall under your counter.
google-yahoo would have been?
"public" and "on a website" are different things. I work for the state, my salary is public, but it's not on a website.

set up a WDS network and put and put a bunch of routers everywhere?
I thought Europe was more restrictive than the US in terms of free speech (didn't some guy in Austria go to jail for denying the Holocaust?)
you can probably take it to a service location to have the battery changed
That's a good point, if I know that the battery can be replaced, I have no problem with the new system, but I can't buy it if I don't know for sure...

Yeah, I'm pretty curious but I'm not going to click 15 times to read the article err "slide show". I'm not you clicking monkey!

maybe
Is it "third world" war or third "world war"?

But see, I wasn't specific enough to say "give them food" I said "ensure that they have enough food" which could mean teaching or anything I want.
My whole point was that making vague statements is meaningless. They don't mean anything. They could mean anything.
Sorry, but your comment was similar to:
If you don't want people around the world to starve, ensure that they have enough food.
This is not specific enough to be meaningful.
ensure that the business environment changes so that they don't need to
Thanks, I'll get right on that. Wow.
They open source stuff and they patent ridiculous stuff. Am I supposed to like them or not?

Fuck it. Time to get an iPhone.
