I see it all the time that people confuse the distro with the desktop. Even when professional reviews are done, what they test is not the distro, but the current version of the desktop.
They are testing the distribution's default configs for those desktops !
You seem to think the OSS movement makes free software for "average joe". This is not true, they do it for themselfs. Often the command line solves a propblem consistently and thoroughly. Pragmatism wins here over a "We need a gui" application.
The Desktop market is shrinking in favor of tablets and smartphones. Two areas where apple has strong products (One could argue they created those markets).
I have to admit, I really like Windows 7. I've tried various distros of *nix and they all left me in the cold when I realized that I had to hack a bunch of files to get my video/lan/wireless/modem working, and then pray like hell that what worked for one guy on a forum someplace would also work on my machine but never did.
That's because you can't filter the sound advice from the crap. Do you run every registry edit that is spewed on forums when solving a windows issue ?
I've heard this more often than not, but it took me two weeks and three different Apple stores to convince them that there was an issue with the motherboard...and that's with showing two different guys a MemTest86+ that was scrolling memory write failures, then swapping the memory modules into my laptop and having it test flawlessly. I literally had to have my boss take the laptop to a third Apple store and intentionally cause a scene to get them to replace it on principle, because nobody would listen, because THEIR diagnostics were coming back clean, but files were still going unwritten to disk. Admittedly that's just one anecdote, but Origin PC has sent me every single part I've ever asked for after ten minutes on the phone. If you're alright with doing your own hardware repairs on a laptop, Origin's got the better warranty in my experience.
I had to fight with dell for 2 months before they replaced a broken motherboard. And we (a university) are a big Dell customer.
What's wrong with md5 it's fast and almost everywhere, yes the probability of collisions might be 2^48 instead of 2^96 or whatever, but it suffices imho !
If it was crc32 I could understand but md5, jeez louise.

Who is this we ?
You should try Slackware.
In my opinion informing and educating the user of userland changes is a plus.
Now are Arch's packages gpg'ed yet ?
Because the people who utter that announcement are heard and reacted to by people like you. And you enlarge it even further.

Sad thing is, marketing dept rarely loses - same with HR.
Only number 1 matters to users. We Europeans we'll debate and argue about the 'invasion of privacy' but eventually we will give in as well.
I never thought there would be such a thing as a "taxi war".

Dude he's not saying it doesn't take memory he's just saying relative to the cpu and gpu , system memory SPEED is one of your last concerns.
Non techy users don't install updates.

If it crashes there usually is a (exploitable)(remote) bug.
Funny that you say this; I always look if the key that they typed is close to the one they should have typed, to determine
if it's excusable or not.
Does the UK have healthcare and other socialized stuff like that because that's not a bad pay if it has it.
Is that the netto or bruto pay ?
I don't consider 130 $ to be much if you are a ARM enthusiast !
Development boards used to cost a LOT more.
XMMS searches better than audacious and is faster.

A friend of mine was almost recruited to do this a few years ago (2005 iirc). The pay was 600 $/day in Iraq.
With *Windows explorer*, you're kinda confirming what he says.
Didn't BP come from the seperation of Standard Oil which was an american company ? ?
It's easier to play the defense game than the conquering game, just look at vietnam.
We're not out to get Iran, we're out to get your water with our rainmachines. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/8527455/Mahmoud-Ahmadinejad-says-Europe-stealing-Irans-rain.html
