  1. It's all marketing on Intel Looks Beyond the Microchip · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's probably just a way to try to regain market that AMD has taken away from them. Intel for the most part dominates the notebook processor business, but over the past couple years has lost a sizeable amout of market in the desktop industry to AMD. Intel is probably trying to start fresh so to speak. The Pentium chip has been around for 10+ years now, and the Pentium 4 chip has also been around for a couple years. Some people, more the "not so computer people" could equate that length of time with obsolete, although that is not entirely true. While I'm sure Intel could use a better naming sense, I'm not suprised that they're trying to reshape their image. I switched to AMD when I built my desktop computer last April and I'm happy I did. In my opinion, AMD is better designed and performs better for my needs. If more people follow suit and see the things the way I do, which seems to be the way things are heading, Intel could be in some trouble. This is probably just Intel's way of fighting back to regain the market for desktop processors again.

  2. I wonder on What's So Wrong With the ESRB? · · Score: 2, Insightful
I wonder how much fault lies in the education factor today. So many parents are working leaving their kids home alone, or buying them whatever to make up for the fact that they're not there. They're so caught up in their work that they either don't care that their kids are playing M-rated games or don't even take notice. The rating system is there good or bad, and the mature rated games are mature, and are meant for people who fully understand right from wrong. You can't always blame the ESRB for this. It is also the parents' responsibility to monitor what their children play, or if they choose, not to monitor. I'm sure there's a website out there that reviews games to show how they got their rating for the parents to look at and decide if it's a game they want their children playing.

As for the 'F', maybe they need to set stricter guidelines as to what qualifies for what rating. Put in guidelines like "if it has this, it must be rated M" etc.

  3. Why not? on Would You Take A Paycut for More Interesting Work? · · Score: 1

Ask yourself this. Do you like your job? Do you like where and who you work for and with? Do you enjoy your job for the most part? If you can answer yes, then why should it matter whether or not your job is truly your college major. I can say personally, that I would rather have a job that I enjoy, over a job that may be more directly related to my major that I wouldn't enjoy. As I see it, you have it pretty good. It's not selling out as far as I'm concerned.

Soon it's gonna be illegal for me to leave my iPod plugged into the family computer. Now my entire family can go onto the computer and play the music off my iPod. What's next. Next thing I know I'm not gonna be able to play my music when any guests are in the room since it's my copy and I don't have the rights to share playback. Yes, it is always good to have spares on hand, but for some parts, you can't always keep a spare. I do IT work and we have some spare chips of RAM, cables, hard drives, etc. But we have had the rare failure of a switch or other network equipment. These parts are expensive (hundreds to thousands of dollars), and having spare ones lying around would be wasteful. We simply have deals where if one dies, they'll ship us the replacement overnight or within 2 days for free. We get the extended warranty so we can do that. By the time they're out of warranty, we'll be looking to upgrade them anyway.

  13. No wonder on Piracy Not To Blame In Decline of Moviegoers · · Score: 1

Why would anyone pay like $10 a ticket to see some crappy movie. So often today, movie companies put out movies with bad acting, and more importantly, a bad plot. Producers trying to take big names and turn them into movies (Cat in the Hat ring a bell). They take brilliant books or whatnot, and ruin them in the theater. It's no suprise that people don't want to go to the theater. Every once in a while there is a good movie that comes out that easily deserves the $10 price for the ticket, Lord of the Rings for example. The message should be clear. Make better movies and you will attract more moviegoers.

  14. The Space Shuttle on Panel Challenges NASA Over Shuttle Safety · · Score: 1

The Space Shuttle is fine in itself, the wings and it's nosecone were SEVERELY reinforced. Heck they took apart all 3 orbiters to do this. Of what I understand, Endeavour is still being refitted, which is why Discovery is Atlantis' backup whenever it goes up (tentatively March 4, 2006). This was done as a last resort should something fall off (make the shuttle key body parts stronger). The foam itself is the problem as most of you know. Whether their solutions worked or not they will never know, but are assuming that they did not for safety. For all NASA knows, it could have been a misapplication of the foam. The place where the foam came off was on a part of the tank that is difficult to uniformly apply so it could have been misapplied leading to it falling off. Another thing could have been during transport. The tank is made in Louisiana and is loaded onto a barge and sailed through the Gulf of Mexico to Florida to be used. It could have been bumped in just the right way to cause it to loosen just enough. Either way, NASA will never know so they're taking the "don't take any chances" approach which in the long run is probably the better idea. They need to fix the shuttle to complete the ISS. NASA's new vehichle is probably going to be a 3 man capsule similar to the old capsules, particularly Apollo. Finally, Spaceflight in itself is inherently dangerous. NASA knows it, the astronauts (who obviously are not forced to go up) know it. Tragedies happen (Apollo 1, Challenger, Columbia) Not to make it sound like I don't care, they were indeed tragdies and horrible things to happen, and NASA has for the most part learned from its mistakes. I am confident that NASA will quickly lock down on the problem and will get the Shuttles back in full, safe operation.
