I agree with you too. Laptops, especially now with most campuses being wireless, provide too many distractions. I'd disagree with a campuswide ban on laptops in class simply because there are some classes where having a laptop is helpful, but some its more a distraction than a help. Ultimately it should be the professor's decision as to whether or not a laptop is permitted. The students should just suck it up and write the notes manually. Besides, one thing I found for myself is that typing up the notes that I wrote after class was a great way for me to review the material and able to learn it better, plus getting an easier to read copy to look over later.

Another is equipment. Know what equipment (routers, firewalls, etc) is used for what and how it works.

Finally, software. Figure out how firewalls, spam filters, etc do their job and how to open and close ports.

I'm sure there's many more ideas but here's a few to start out with.

This is just another thing google is getting itself into. This could be good or bad, depending on how you want to think about it. It's good that they are trying to broaden their scope on the internet further. The bad is that if they continue to stretch into different fields, they could spread themselves out too thin and could have it backfire on them. IMHO, they're a good company and I trust their products and services for the most part.

Microsoft doesn't want that simply because it could make the customer (who was a fool to buy it on ebay in the first place) think that it's Microsoft's fault. Because then the customer would have wasted money and be pissed off at Microsoft. All debates on how good or bad Microsoft products are aside, from a business standpoint, counterfeit software can hurt any software company, Microsoft or otherwise.

Controls are relatively simple, the learning curve is pretty easy, just gotta get the reflexes up a bit. As stated earlier RPGs are also good as well as RTS's as well. Rise of Nations is a good one. If you're good at it, simply "lend" her some troops to cover her while she gets used to the controls and strategy. The only problem residing with comptuer games is that you need 2 copies of the game in many cases as well as 2 computers that are networked together and can handle gaming. Consoles are a little simpler because all you need is one console, one game, & two controllers. There's a lot out there, I'm sure you'll find something that you and her both can enjoy.

There is a landing strip in Spain that can be used in case of emergency. It's never been used, which is probably a good thing as the landing strip ends with a rather severe drop. Shuttle pilots would have to nail the landing perfectly or else find a good way to jump from the shuttle. Unlike the landing strip at Edwards AFB or the KSC, there is positively NO room for error. At Edwards and KSC there's not a lot of room for error, but if they touch down 50 feet late, they're not gonna end up in a ditch at the end of the runway.

If you don't want to upgrade to 5.2, there is a plug-in for Winamp that does the same thing. The nice part about the plug-in is that it allows you to copy songs OFF of your iPod and onto your hard drive.

You're right, I did, but from prior experience with myself getting bullied (quite a bit), not much was ever done if anything at all. Bullying is a major problem in schools, sometimes it can snowball into a situation that is tragic, as it unfortunately did in Columbine. It's ashame that this is the case, but it's life and life isn't always fair. I think more resources need to be put into combatting bullying and the more that they put into fighting one video game, the less they can put towards the TRUE problem, bullying in schools.

  17. Something else... on PS3 Delay May Hurt Current Gen Too · · Score: 2, Insightful
Something else to consider is how current gamers spend their money. If a new system is coming out, and someone has a reserve down or wants one, they may be less likely to buy games for the current console. They may want to save money to buy the new console and games for the new one too. Buying games for PS2 when PS3 is slated to come out soon might be a waste of money. The backwards compatibility might help this but there's still something to be said about new hardware and games.

Think of it this way, you just bought a new computer with XP. Why spend money on software or hardware that either won't work, or won't work to its fullest capacity on your new machine?

Maybe this has been said before and if it has, I'm sorry. But I have an XBOX 360 and I like it. I think Microsoft did a decent job with it. I'll admit, there are several things that Microsoft could have done better, backwards compatibility being the big one.

The thing that I think really hurt the XBOX 360 is the lack of a big launch game. The original XBOX had Halo. XBOX 360 had no one "big" game at launch, and still doesn't have that "big" game. This doesn't mean that Perfect Dark Zero or Call of Duty 2, or any of the launch titles are bad, they're just not the caliber of Halo that the original XBOX launched with. I think that once Microsoft releases that one game, Halo 3 perhaps, that the XBOX 360 will start doing better. It may start doing better this month when more of the 360 games come out such as Ghost Recon 3.

To sum it up, I think the 360 has what's needed to be a good, true next gen system. Microsoft and the game developers just need to get the new games out, that are truly next gen rather than modified-for-360 games.

  22. Well, Duh! on The Impact of Violent Gaming · · Score: 1
It can pretty much be proven that yes, violent video games can effect people's judgement, mostly kids. This being said, it's why I have no problem with laws restricting access of these games to minors. Someone 8 years old should not be playing games like GTA, Doom 3, or any of the hundreds of games out there that are incredibly violent & gory. Should someone under 18 want one of these games, the idea is to have their parents buy it for them. Hopefully the parents are responsible enough to actually pay attention to what they're buying and determine whether or not their child is responsible and mature enough to handle the game's content. Granted, there are loopholes for the kid to get the 'M' rated games (older siblings, etc) but it limits access which is the first step (Same idea with limiting tobacco and alcohol products from the underage).

Violent video games can affect people's state of mind, and its important to make sure those who play them know that what happens in the video games, stays there. Just because its ok to shoot someone with a shotgun 40 times in let's say Halo 2, doesn't mean you can do the same thing to your neighbor.

  23. Support? on Dell starting to sell Computers with Linux · · Score: 1

I think one thing that affects how Dell does Linux is simply support. If they use Windows, it's really only two versions they have to worry about supporting. There's really only Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and Windows 2000 is quickly fading from view. With Linux, Dell may put on one distribution and version, but with how many Linux distros there are, it would be hard to get enough people to support each one to fullfil the Dell warranties. Different distros require different drivers, different ways of doing things, and have different nuances that make it hard to have the one set of troubleshooting like Windows. I see nothing wrong with putting Linux on desktops but it could make things harder on Dell, and cost them more money hence lessening their profits. Just a thought...

It will be interesting to see how this service does compared to the new XBOX Live available for the XBOX 360 users. XBOX Live over the past couple years has become the standard for online console gaming with in my opinion great service and the ability to download content for live-enabled games.

The online console era is the new thing for consoles and is now definitely here to stay as it looks like both XBOX 360 and PS3 both are going to be media centers in one form or another. I think HUB is going to have some catching up to do to match the growing success of XBOX Live.
