    I've listened to several of these indie bands, even gotten a lot of their stuff from waffles, but all in all it just doesn't seem up to par with most of the other music i enjoy (stones, zep, floyd, etc). The production values don't seem to be as good, and in general just not my style.

    Airports are an area of implied consent, ie if you set foot in an airport you automatically consent (waive your 4th amendment rights) to searches.

    XP has built in FTP support in explorer, just go to an ftp:// site and it'll let you browse it with an explorer-like GUI.

    Here in Oak Park (also chicago metropolitan), I get ATT/SBC/whatever it is now Elite DSL for something like $35/mo, and it's 5 or 6mb down. Pretty good, if you ask me.

    Totally irrelevant, but still true. A good programmer should know how a compiler works, and the caveats of the specific one they're using. Expecting people to know at least a little more about their computer besides "oh look i left clicky here and the innanets pop up!!" is NOT too much to ask.

    Why is it so bad to expect a user understands at least a little bit about how their system works? I say if people are too dumb/ignorant to use GNU/Linux, they shouldn't use it.

    That's partially what I meant. I know that hydrogen itself is a clean fuel, creating little environmental damage, but the processes that are used to create it are not environmentally sound, and do nothing to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels.

    You should try using your Distro-packaged nVidia drivers. Normally, they've got scripts and other mechanisms to install things that the official packages from nVidia don't have.

    it's pretty easy to write a program for polynomial root finding. that's what i did and use in my math class all the time.

    It's not proprietary if you host your code somewhere, that's a total non-issue. It just isn't distributed in source form by whoever's distributing it.
