But we can't adequately keep track of variables in software we've written.

Isn't it perhaps a tad presumptuous to think that we've taken into account all the variables in our reverse engineering of nature? I appreciate this mindset would mean no progress - but perhaps a halfway house, where we're not... yanno... attempting to make a massive modification, like "killing off an entire species"?

  3. I'd been saying to myself - if there's one thing that'll make me buy a phone, it's six cameras. And a notch - or even better, two notches. And no headphones. Or SD card slot.

Man, that'd be the ideal phone.

Got me to download LogMeIn and guided me to Event Viewer. Pointed out "red crosses" as signs of a virus. They then proceeded to poke around the PC, occasionally firing up Regedit, and just generally looking through folders.

At the end of the process, I explained I'd just been following along as I was curious what the patter was, he attempted to delete My Documents, My Pictures and My Music, and proceeded to swear at me for wasting his time.

Something like a Raspberry Pi image that you install in your home, and it provides remote 'assistant' support for devices outside your home, with all the data stored within your LAN. Like, plug a USB HD into the Pi, and call it a home server. Then using that as the base for home automation.

  20. A UK university? on The Rise of the Pointless Job (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

Yeah, that's probably one of the worst places for this.

As has been discussed elsewhere, you'll have people being sent left and right on health and safety courses, telling you what you can and cannot do. If you try and complete a job that is not your official job (Just put the bloody shelf up yourself), and it doesn't have the paperwork to go with it - good luck with that.

There are Administrators. And Administrative Administrators. And Office Administrative Administrators to administrate the Administrative Administrators. The Vogons were likely based solely on the administrative system of a UK university.

Whereas the academic side of a UK university is whichever race can get to a villa in southern France the fastest.

  21. The problem with that - as much as I'd like to - is that these people end up causing changes that impact our lives. You can almost hear people salivating at the idea of "They're abandoning the discussion - we're free to go fucking insane".

The last thing you want to do, imho, is abandon the entire topic to these people. There's a very real chance you won't like what changes they force upon you.

It's fucking tiring to have these discussions, over and over again. But if you don't throw some level-headed views into the discussion...
