Excellent points. I agree whole heartedly, the amendment reads A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.. Notice that the Militia is the first and foremost thing that is mentioned. This, logically, would imply that the right to keep and bear arms is in the militia.

I generally feel that America tends to appeal to the people more than the proper education. We need to make budget cuts? Let's make it seem like we're doing better by raising the amount of Math they need to graduate but lowering the standards in all the classes. In doing so, the kids will no longer be able to be enrolled in those expensive art and music courses and then we won't have to offer many of them anymore (that's an almost literal example from my alma mater after I left).

I just feel that the US school systems are going to hell.

I've seen semi-professional (meaning college seniors that are working on a music video for a final with professional equipment) videos that have far worse looking video. My biggest problem with it (and this may just be the player) is that the audio doesn't quite sync up sometimes, which definitely is a problem when you are working with so many different video sources.

I think that was a genius move on their part, it gets them a cheap, decently good music video and gets them a bunch of "free" publicity. I say cheap and free in quotes because the amount of work they had to have put into this is ridiculous, enough that they could probably have worked a real job and paid a camera crew to work with em for a video. It wouldn't be as cool or as innovating, so theirs was definitely a better choice.

  9. To answer your question... on What's the Solution To Intellectual Property? · · Score: 1

...and avoid flaming you, unlike much of what's here.

I personally acknowledge some degrees of IP. The first and foremost IP I acknowledge are stories. Anything of that sort of creative nature deserves to be acknowledged. I feel that, in instances of short stories (as in around or less than 25,000 words) copyright should last approximately ten years. For novels, lifetime plus three years (giving the family some time to adjust to not having that income).

After that, the things I recognize most are that which I consider to be music. Yes, I realize that this is an extremely objective assessment, especially with my tastes! That being said, I feel that music, as in the actual written music or composition, should hold copyright at maximum for life of the person who dies earliest and has their name on it plus three years. Yeah, that would mean Sir Paul would hate me cause he'd actually have to be creative again, but do I really care? As for the actual recordings of it, ten years with a slightly expensive option for extending it to twenty when the ten is up so long as the masters are owned by the musician or musicians who recorded it and not some company .

As for patents, I feel that this is the most idiotic IP we keep around. Patents should have up to two years to make something happen and the ability to extend it until five as long as the person or group show a reasonable degree of progress on the final product. As soon as the product is on the market, the group should have around five years to put it to use, but if it is an individual doing it, give then ten years.

So, basically, I feel that IP isn't terrible, but the current regulations suck ass and should be remodeled. Ideally though, we as people, would put more into patronage, like paying what we really feel something to be worth, kind of like Radiohead's In Rainbows worked before it hit shelves.

Hopefully, if and when they win their case, it takes out more than just the RIAA and SSC (which is already dead, as parent pointed out), it can move on to all the others. Not saying that it's going to happen, just pointing out that the likelihood is there.

  19. Re:That's disappointing on Obama Would Redirect NASA Funding to Education · · Score: 1

Great point. Why should the patents that NASA hold go back to government funding instead of NASA's? Why should we use tax dollars to support the education system, even if we (as is the case for most of slashdot) will never have children? Why should we use tax dollars to support the army, even when the money being collected is from a pacifist? Why, why, why?

Just because people aren't interested doesn't mean that it's not an important cause worthy of tax dollars. The fact of the matter is, a number of our current scientific, medical advances, and even household items have been developed through NASA, or NASA grants. Methods for detecting Cataracts and other eye diseases, medical imaging, smoke detectors, and, the one everyone brings up, plastics.

But this project isn't important enough for tax dollars, NASA should solely be supported by donations.

  20. I hated it when it first came out... on Flock Delivers On Promises Post 1.0 · · Score: 1

And I'm currently using it now. I have complaints about it, just like everyone else here.

First and foremost, is the fact that it is a very resource hungry application. Just when Firefox (which is what it's supposedly based on) is getting its footprint down to minimal amounts, Flock starts hitting the streets and uses up as much of my system as anything else I run.

Second, the sidebar seems clumsy to me. I don't know, maybe if I were to use it for 2 weeks or so, I would get over this, but it just doesn't feel logical to me.

Third, and final, why the bloody hell does it automagically add "Favorites" (and call them favorites instead of bookmarks!) when you install it! This is one of the biggest problems I have with winbloz machines as well. I don't go to youtube, so why the hell do I suddenly have a bookmark for it!?

All in all, it's a very nice idea, but, good (insert deity here), why did they make it so system heavy?!

This idea is horribly dangerous for anyone running a PA. That "whitespace" is where wireless mics run. They use UHF/VHF frequencies to communicate between the receiver and the mic itself. I recently toured the Shure Plant in Niles IL and they pointed out that these whitespace devices are causing an extremely large amount of harm to something that's already standardized to run in the whitespace. I don't know, it really kind of worries me that my wireless mic systems won't work anymore, or that, when I go to a concert, the artists will be limited to cable length.

  25. Just like Linux on Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software? · · Score: 4, Insightful

IMHO Mac users who send out files to people should probably use a virus checker. It's just polite. The fact that something can't cause damage to your machine doesn't mean you shouldn't check it to make sure it won't hurt someone else's I'm kinda being hypocritical here, seeing as in my years running Macs and Linux boxes, I've rarely run virus checkers, but then again, I hardly forward email and almost never deal with attachments.

Just because it won't effect you doesn't mean it won't effect someone you know. Now here's where everyone will start saying, "it's teh windoze uzer's own fault! Dey shouldn't be so dumb!" but seriously people, if you want to show people that Unix is a better choice, show them by helping, not by hurting.
