You raise a rather valid point. Linus himself will tell you his position in the kernel development is basically, will this patch go in, won't it. From my understanding of the whole situation, Sun's position is more involved than Linus even. They actually write a whole bunch of stuff themselves and decide to put it in, along with other stuff that other people write out. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it seems to me that Sun is doing more to further OS development than Linus.

That being said, watch as I get modded down massively.

The problem then arises that things such as education, parks, police, and anything else that isn't quite so important to the general public goes down hill, or at least that's what would happen here "in the colonies."

The general public has a tendency to not want to spend money on anything that doesn't directly effect them, so they won't care if the police department looses its funding unless they've recently been robbed, they won't care about the money going to schools unless they currently have or plan on having kids in the immediate future, they won't care about the parks unless they live by them. This would only pose more problems in the long run unless the general public suddenly becomes smart, which I don't think can happen.

  6. Common on Busting the MythBusters' Yawn Experiment · · Score: 1

This is actually kinda common, Mythbusters disappoints me rather often because they decide to use poor statistics or don't test scientifically enough. A good example of this would be the episode with the sniper shootout, where they tried to shoot through the other sniper's scope.

They admitted from the beginning that it was an extremely close range for a sniper. They decided to move the rifles closer together in order to guarantee that the shots would be accurate. Now as they moved the rifles closer, they caused more damage to the other scope. Wouldn't it make sense, therefore, that it's possible for the rifle to be more likely to pierce straight through if they were farther apart?

It's things like that that bug me about the show.

Is there a difference between tweaking and tinkering? On my Gentoo Box, I have had it running for nearly a year now, and I still am tweaking it, but I consider that to be tinkering. I like finding new things to do to try and make it better (or, as it turns out, worse usually) and figure out how I fixed/destroyed it.

On my iBook, I do a reinstall about every 3-4 months or so, just cause I have so much shit I need to sort through and decide if it's even worth holding on to or not (more often than not, not). When I do this, it takes me about half an hour to tweak it. All my programs are close at hand, the most time consuming part is installing things like DP, ProTools, X11 (now I do that in the reinstall process) Disc Warrior, and sometimes Toast (depends on if I can find my copy of it or not). Usually that's easily within half an hour. I also copy my user's library and whatnot over. Never much more than 10 minutes for that.

So short answer, for Linux for me, I'm never done, for a Mac, 30 minutes most.

Oh, I realize that that isn't plagarization, but I also realize that that would show up as such (from what has been explained to me about TurnItIn and such). They cross reference different essays in their collection to see if the same phrases show up in them and the more often the same phrases show up, the great percentage of the paper is plagiarized. I understand that coming to the same sentence does not equal plagiarizing, but these programs are designed in such a way that they misinterpret two very similar sentences that may have come out of the two separate creators minds as one plagiarizing the other. Please, do correct me if I have misunderstood these wonderful systems.

  10. Re:I find opinions like this sad on Is The Term Paper Dead? · · Score: 1, Troll

RTFA. It points out how, as essays keep getting added and added, eventually every sentence talking about George Washington will have been used in one paper or another, therefore, no paper will ever be non-plagiarized by TurnItIn.com's standards.

For example if I were to write a paper about Lincoln freeing the slaves, it might go something like "Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves." Googling that exact phrase gives off 7 hits. Now did I plagiarize that, or was it my own work? If you go with TurnItIn's standards, I'm pretty sure that would be marked as a plagiarized phrase. Does that sound right?

Furthermore, if they know how to use Google, they could easily search that in quotes and find that exact phrase as well. Thus, term papers need to die, or at the very least become less crucial. I know I have yet to have a paper that counted for my entire grade. I would like one, but only because my university doesn't use TurnItIn or anything of the sort...yet.

I don't know if this is just my experiences coming through, but I've noticed a few others mentioning this difference as well. I've used products of both of them to varying levels of success in my past--and that in and of itself is something.
This goes back to simple capitalistic theory, with competition being good for the consumer. Two major corporations in control of the vast majority of the market, fighting to make the better product.

This is an unusual viewpoint here on slashdot, but honestly, so long as they stick to bettering each other through competition rather than belittling each other, I'm all for it. When one company decides to launch whole hearted smear campaigns rather than improve their product, or, even worse, decides it's more cost effective to buy out the competition, that's where I get worried, and in honesty, most major corporations have done one, if not both.
