I think a lot of it is because it simply feels really good to put something out to a community where everyone is very warm and receptive to new, open programs! It just gives the designer a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, a feeling of accomplishment that some unrewarding wage-slave job would not give.
This is why many programmers supplement their tasks and education with an output to the Opensource coummnity - it feels good!
I e-mailed malda for ya, i figure that if 1000 emails didn't help, my 1001st one will!
In the meantime, perhaps you can find a way to filter out any messages that are linked FROM slashdot.org and family. I know that there's scripts and such that can tell where you're coming from -- maybe incorporate that somehow. Beats me if it's really possible/feasible/a solution though -- just thought I'd try to help.
Give the teachers more money, but gimme my rebate check.
Am I the only one that can see the inherit contradiction there?
It's possible to do both -- I'd rather see more go to education than *gasp* the military!
But maybe they're right -- we'd rather have a missile defense program than properly educated children! It's absolutely ridiculous.
There's plenty of places to cut spending and still pump it into education. The question is, does throwing money at the problem solve it? In the case of education -- I think YES, at least more than any other type of problem.
Isn't this company in financial trouble? That sounds like a great way to make more money! Spend it on extra employment while cutting your customer base at the same time!
This is quite possibly the lamest slashdot thread I've ever read. Not just this one post, but the entire page. You guys really need to look at what you're posting, and realize something:
Wow - IBM is doing awesome work for the Linux community, if you ask me. In fact, I'm willing to say that IBM is going to be Linux's savior, because they're pumping so much good stuff into it!
IBM has found what will best counter their competitors, and they see big opportunity in Linux!
When rocket ships blast off, they shoot tons of fire and emit tons of smoke from the bottom of the rocket. Are nuclear ships going to then emit tons of radioactive green goo in order to propel themselves??
Speaking of Gnome vs. KDE - what the hell is going on with Gnome? KDE is releasing all of these cool things and very frequently at that. From my point of view (a gnome user that isn't subscribed to devel lists or anything), Gnome is just sitting there like a bump on a log. Foo!
The stock market is now going to explode. If you haven't noticed, it took its dip when Microsoft lost the first case, and NEVER really recovered. Well, I'm going to take a risk here and throw some money in!
Besides, the economy isn't really THAT bad - product sales are still pretty high... except in our industry:-(
Yeah i know its bad to try to cash in on something caused my Microsoft (oh, i'm NOT investing in them though), but I have a good feeling about it!
Want to know what's funny about this? I clicked on an ad for NewsForge.. a site I've never really given a chance - and I really like it! it's now in my bookmarks at work, cool!
Ever since all of those great opennap servers of MusicCity switched to their own Morpheus client, my Gnapster program has seemed next to worthless (and I haven't tried it for a bit...)
Are there any good opennap networks up now? Is anything being done?
Nobody has mentioned learning with RESOLVE/C++ yet. I have taken the first 2 classes of this 3-class series at Ohio State, and although I know most of it from AP high school, I think it's a great way to learn programming.. even though many people think it's ridiculous.
The death toll here is going to be catastrophic.
This is obviously thoroughly plotted act of terrorism, and I hope President Bush responds with a strong fist. It is going to be quite a test for them.

The opening sounds as if our author is a user/addict of some hardcore drug. Low and behold, his drug is caffeine. Quite an excellent read!

Bertoline!
It might not be that great, but it's my sense of humor and some that this community would like!
Check it out please!
The same thing as always will happen: Human loses first game, then figures out redundant program, proceeds to winning with ease.
YES! One step closer to Sex In Outer Space!!

Do you really update your servers on EVERY kernel release? That sounds like a fair amount of work and potential downtime..

It is definitely time to give slashdot and the other sites some banner click-throughs, everyone. Pitch in a couple a day, it won't bite!

Yet another case of a great idea and excellent engineering gone wrong due to ridiculous business practices (management?)...
