  2. what I do on Long-Term Personal Data Storage? · · Score: 1

I purchased 2 small form factor USB external hard drives. I encrypted both with truecrypt. Since I am a Windows user I use MS's SyncToy to 'backup' the stuff I want to them. Synctoy makes it easy for me. One hard drive sits at work plugged into my PC, one at a bank in a safe deposit box. If my home computer dies and I need access to my data, I VPN into work and mount the encrypted drive or go to the bank and pick the other one up. I have a routine where on a set schedule I take the one from work to the bank and swap it out with the one in the safe deposit box. I take that one, synch up my data and then take it to work.

If one of the hard drive dies I still have the data at home plus on the other external hard drive. If one of the drives dies after the 5 year warranty period ends then I will buy another drive. If USB starts to become obsolete I would save some money up and buy 2 more drives that uses whatever technology we will be using then.

You don't know what technology we will be using to access data 10 or 20 years from now. Use what you think will be around and change later if that turns out not to be the case.

While half the range would be good enough to make it through the day I would never chance having half a charge if I could help it. You never know when the shit will hit the fan like it did several years ago for me.

Driving to work with about a third of a tank of gas I received a call that most of my immediate family was in a major car accident, an experience I would wish on no one. For that day this led to a lot of driving between hospitals, homes and the garage where they took the car.

At some point I had to stop for gas. Pumping the gas I was standing there numb as one usually is in that situation, but I was also irritated that I had to 'waste' time on that day putting petro in the car. From that day on I have never let the gauge get to half a tank.

A crisis like that is relatively rare, but I would rather have a full tank/charge then have to deal with pumping/charging my vehicle when there are more important things to be dealing with.

Not the BS low gravity, high firing rate sniper rifle only servers that seem to populate most of the UT servers that are still up on the net today. UT server has been running at work for the past 7 years or so and I don't see why it won't be running 7 years from now.

Resident Evil 4 at #2? I have heard the game was pretty good, but #2 best game ever? I or anyone I know has never played it. I didn't think it was that popular.

I don't see Halo in the top 10 either. Halo never impressed me. Single player mode on the PC to me was boring and there are other PC based games (UT) playing multiplayer that I enjoyed more. Where Halo gets all the fanboys is on the console. I have played it on the xbox and to me it was ok at best. The controls I just could not get use to. After using the keyboard and mouse for FPS, the console controller just sucked. Personally I think Halo was more of a marketing hype success then a truly great game success.

I don't know if things have changed with HP but I had an experience some years ago with HP.com that absolutely stunned me.

About 5 years or so ago we bought a HP tape backup library/changer new. 11 months after the manufacture date of the drive I went up on HP.com looking for the part # for the rack mounting kit for the drive and I couldn't find any info. After contacting someone at HP I was directed to the right location on the site. The reason I had difficulties finding the information was that the drive was considered end of life. I was told by HP that within 8 months information about the drive would disappear from their site since it was end of life.

This absolutely shocked me. We had IBM servers approaching 10 years of age and I could go up on IBM's site and get part #s and documentation for. But a 1 year old HP tape drive, good luck!

I suspect this also includes government networks run by contractors.

A while back I use to be friends with someone who worked for one of these companies that do contract work for the government, for one of those agencies that require Secret or Top Secret clearance along with requiring routine polygraph tests.

I was told stories on occasion how IT jobs would come open and be filled not with individuals that had the technical qualifications but those that had the security clearance.

Heck, my friend who had a clearance and did clerical work was promoted to run the Help Desk and was giving a book to learn on the job. Then again a few years later to administer servers spread around the globe, with no formal training.

I was told the contracting companies would not hire individuals for the clearance jobs unless they already had the clearance. The clearance trumped any sort of job qualification.

If this has changed since 9/11 I don't know.
