It's all my fault. My apologies to the ISPs. When I worked at Customer Service for one in the days of dial up, clients would ask whether visiting web sites abroad would add extra cost to their phone bill. I told them that no, all internet traffic is the same, you only pay to get to the ISP, the rest of the way is covered by the ISP.
Now it seems that my innocent advice ruined everything... I'm sorry.
you know, on ebay there are hundreds of knock offs of Apple, Nokia, Samsung, etc... All "KIRF" as Engadget likes call them. Some of them have dual SIM slots and other features that respectable brands rarely offer. I have never risked sending a few £ to HK by paypal but this might be my first time. It's a small portable browser, PDF reader with BIN price is £140... tempting.
I don't understand why can't we have the best of both. A manufacturer should just put the LCD panel on top of the eInk screen and a way to switch from "reader" to "computer" modes.
I am Portuguese and can tell you that these speeding-triggered red lights is only as effective as the human enforcement behind them. The "shame factor" does not really count for much, as a lot of people here tend to feel super-human once they are in their little metal cocoons.
I get the impression that people get frustrated with the red lights regardless of who/what triggered them. I'd say that the road congestion is so serious and the general behaviour of drivers is so aggressive that it really does not matter what the road looks like.
If you are a pedestrian in a large town here you will know that for a lot of drivers the yellow light means "speed up" and in the first 2-3 seconds after the light turns red you might as well scream "banzai!" while crossing.
Tailgating at crazy speeds is common on motorways and if real life fights and screaming were as common face to face as they are from the inside of the car, there would not be a lot of free time for anything else. When I read about road rage in USA roads as told on/., I get the impression that US drivers would feel at home here (after some adaptation to smaller cars and manual gearboxes).
Well, if instead of calling them "newspapers" they name their product "News ringtone" or "iPhone News App", then they can expect millions of units to sell for £1 each.
One of these days someone wrote on Slashdot that the game they recommended for Linux was Altitude, a multiplayer airplane shooting game. The demo was valid for x hours of gameplay and when it ran out I paid the $10 for it.
When the game is started, it tries to update itself and there is a server login, which makes sense as the game is multiplayer only. The first screen shows the change log from previous version, then you go straight to the main menu. Between clicking the nice icon and joining an ongoing game, probably it takes always 1 minute or less - just the way it should be. Instead of using patience for bypassing different intro screens, films and adverts, I'm using it to find the games that are worth playing. Altitude won an award in a competition between different "indie" games produtions, and I am sure that this will be a better place to search for new games than if I went to the high street shop.
One could offer the point that an owner's failure to protect their WiFi from public use should be an indicator that it is intended for public use, but officially speaking, no real protocol for such an assumption actually exists
A bothy is a basic shelter, usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge. It was also a term for basic accommodation, usually for gardeners or other workers on an estate. Bothies are to be found in remote, mountainous areas of Scotland, northern England and Wales.
ie: yes, it is normal that people share useful things for no reward and without advance warning. I believe that in mountainous places this is very usual.
While we are at it, someone care to enlighten me as to why everytime there is a discussion about blueray, cinema and HDTV Slashdot turns into a whinge party on how HD content all sucks, there is not enough HD content on TV, in the shops, and you'd have to be stupid to spend a penny upgrading your screen; but whenever people are talking about any new computer - or anything with a screen on it actually - there's always someone who wants to play HD films on it?
GTA IV was originally meant to look like Pikmin but the employment conditions are so terrible that the work output shows what's on programmers' minds...
Can I add to the FAQ "Why is a wealthy western-oriented place like Dubai located in the Persian Gulf not a target for the people who want to see the West burn?"

I remember starving entire cities by surrounding them with Diplomats during peace times. It was the Bureaucracy Choke attack :p
in short, it would suck.
I can imagine all the members of parliament singing that famous Chritsmas hit single by Rage against the Machine... but probably they didn't.
I remember reading about this some time ago. That Bill Gates guy is a visionary.

where you come from governments don't multitask?
don't you have elbows?
the only thing they might outweigh the cost of that invasion is staying permanently in the invaded planet. There are plenty of films about that :)
