it would seem that this would allow for an operating system which would be available for a reduced price
I think that this already happened.*GIANT COUGH*
it would be ideal for libraries, internet cafes, and in the homes of casual users
LIBRARIES? I thought those stayed away from windows and used some obscure sun operating system (I got proof)
    And internet cafes?
FR... AD ...EE... AD ... INT... AD ...ER... AD ...NET!
Why does it always have to be microsoft? why not OSX? I would love to try that out on my PC for free if it included ads, and I may pira... er buy it in the future.
and using some sort of ramped up Active X or a rootkit to interact with local files this could be the future of the ad-supported operating system.
    sonyOS anyone?
I am against ads anywhere on my computer unless:
    A. It supports a good* cause
    B. Is text based and only on the internet

(note: gnome-user) Wow, I had the opposite experience... I decided to try out Kde, and wam.. got hit with a slow are unresponsive desktop, on really good hardware, I had konsole output much slower that gnome-terminal, and generally everything about Kde seemed like they packed a lot of eye-candy are eye candy apps together into one giant monolith lump of programming. Then again that was fedora core 3, I should try again in kubuntu now. In fact, right now note2: actual experience, not troll.

  4. WAAAA???? on The Future of Closed Source Software and Linux · · Score: 3, Interesting

are you kidding me? most innovations now start at the linux level. Aero? Vista eye candy? compiz did it a year BEFORE not AFTER. Workspaces? windows still doesn't have that. all the new desktop usability comes from linux, while windows kept the windows 95 desktop going for 10+ years with minor changes. linux thinks AHEAD not 3 year ago like closed source. OPEN means you can risk new ideas, while CLOSED means risks can rouin you. I chose to take bold new innovations out for a spin.

no it won't. (disclamer: I use linux)
most people buy preinstalled windows machines, and don't think:
    Windows + Computer
    OSX + Computer
    they think:
    Mac
    PC
    OS = Computer
    It's nice to wish though

The difference with FireFox extensions is that they can't be embedded in a web page; you need to download them and install them manually. You will never visit a site which requires a particular FireFox extension (running with the same privileges as the rest of your applications) in order to navigate.

WRONG! you need an extension to run pages with xhtml ruby.
