RFID chips are just another kind of key. We've been using them on campus longer than I've been here for dorm access. We use normal metal keys for room access.

Only significant differences I can see is that the RFID chip will eventually run out of juice and die (my ID card has been going strong for over two years so far tho), and it's alot easier to "change the locks" if you lose your RFID key.

If you're talking about the book of Job in that last bit, you should know that it wasn't God who brought the trials against Job... God merely allowed Satan to bring the trials against Job. Satan was basically all "God, if I do this this and this to Job, he'll curse you!" God was like "We'll see. Go ahead." And in the end Job came through and didn't curse God, and God blessed him for it. For those who haven't, the book of Job is a good read, between all the ramblings of his friends (that stuffs a bit hard to get through).

Imagine you're the one who buys a $2000 laptop for $300. Now, you understand this person is selling the laptop for MUCH less than they can get for it. They obviously want to get rid of it quickly. Now list some of the reasons they would do this... oh wait, there's only one possible one... bad things happen if they're caught with it. Which means you shouldn't want anything to do with it, or you should report your suspicions to the authorities.

This is actually one of the few places where US law WORKS.

  17. Not as dumb as you'd think... on The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security · · Score: 1

His idea of "writing perfect code", as you say, is basically the idea of taking the time to design your app instead of jumping in to code and ending up with a mess that is hard to debug.

Also I would imagine it involves programmers learning about how to avoid programming pitfalls such as buffer overflows (make sure your buffer can hold the required data or make your char arrays on the heap so you can size them as needed, etc).

He also mentions that patches WILL be needed, just not as often as say, Internet Explorer needs patches.

Also, you mentioned a user possibly downloading and installing malware by mistake. He addresses that type of thing partly in like #5 or something.

Anyways I think the whole Default Deny thing would help mostly for network stuff (Windows Firewall already blocks everything except what you tell it to not block, all routers block incoming ports except for a whitelist of forwarded ports, etc).

For an OS, I agree, perhaps a whitelist of programs to run might be too much trouble for too little gain. Perhaps John Doe WILL download that program no matter how many ways you block it.

Doesn't mean you can't fire him after you find out he used a company PC to run unauthorized software. :P

And your shiny new default deny will isolate the problem, keeping a virus from propagating and spyware from transmitting.

Only thing I have problems with is that the service doesn't report problems when it can't start, so I have to run the non-service version to get error output. I guess that's to be expected as services might die and then restart, only to die again, and I wouldn't wait 10000 message boxes on my computer when I get up in the morning.

Amen! I especially enjoyed giving my money to Valve and not Vivendi when I bought HL2 Silver. I got something like 15 games for $60, which is an awesome deal anywhere, the best part being the only one that really sucked was Richochet. And, I'm getting Lost Coast and DoD:S for free when they come out. All in all my Steam experience has been rather plesant for the most part. A few bumps, but who can blame Valve... besides those who don't understand what it takes to build and maintain a large scale network like they have. I mean really guys, Steam is groundbreaking, so give it some leeway. Someone's gotta test the waters. I think Steam will revolutionize the way games are distributed and kept updated. Already, Valve is able to roll out patches weekly at times. The old download-run patches system wouldn't work well for that... especially when patches build on each other, it just gets too messy. And for those of you who DON'T want automatic updates, you could always, you know, TURN THEM OFF IN THE OPTIONS. Right click the game, properties, switch the combobox value. I will admit Steam should provide some rollback system to allow you to stop a patching process, turn off updates, and roll back to the state before it started updating. As well as the fact that Steam has a few glitches... I've sometimes found it refuses to let me use offline mode even when I explicitly tell it to. Luckily Internet connections are pretty much ubiquitous now. And if you don't have one, what the hell are you doing here anyway? :p Seriously, go fix the problem instead of whining. You obviously WANT to play it, so take some steps to make sute that it can happen, AND you'll be able to post on slashdot from your own computer, too! Oh and I am very much looking to play Day of Defeat Source when it comes out. Right when it comes out. Without fooling around with a few CDs or a DVD. That's my two cents. Or my four cents. Ok maybe that's more like a dollar.
