Maybe because the XP drivers were insecure and could be used to hack the system? I know XP is easily hacked, but the device drivers running as root/administrator all the time is something that microsoft was trying to get rid of.

Driver backwards compatible? 2000 driver working in XP that worked most of the time. NT4 drivers working in 2000, didn't work for the stuff I tried. 98 to 2000 (or XP) totally different. If microsoft made a new OS (not just a face lift on the old one) having new device drivers for that OS makes sense.

I still think microsoft should have said no to backwards compatibility for apps as well as drivers. New OS, new apps and drivers for that OS. They have a free VM use that VM to install the older OS to run those mission critical older apps. Then they could have made one 64 bit version and move forward. Instead they made 6 (or 8 or 9 if you count all of the 32 bit and 64 bit) different versions and confused the people they want to buy their stuff.

They said yes. They also did the reverse, if the person said McCain, Obama's talking points were used. And again, they agreed with the talking points. It proves the point that not everyone (more likely most) have no idea what Obama or McCain stand for. Which again falls under the sad category.

The biggest problems with the government giving money to the people who make less are:

    2. Where do you think this money comes from in the first place? It comes from taxes. So we are paying ourselves.

I am all for a flat tax rate. The fact that people who make more pay less in percentage of their income in taxes then people makes less is ridiculous. I said percentage. That is what a lot of rich people forget. The rich pay more in raw dollars, but those dollars are a much smaller percentage of their income.

Which means I will not be upgrading the OS version on these machines any time soon. We will have to replace the entire machine. Good for Apple bad for us, but that is the way things go. Same goes with Server 2003 32 bit. You want 4GB+ of memory use a 64bit OS. XP has not had an issue with 2-3GB of memory. The older motherboards (back in 2001) may have that is a hardware issue not a software issue.

As for the actual core count, XP home supports one actual processor. If that processor is a dual core it shows up as a dual core processor unless my laptop is lying to me. I have not tested XP Home with a quad core I cannot speak for that. XP pro support to actual processor CPUs. Those CPUs can have 1 core each or 2 cores each or 4 cores each and all will be seen. So yes you can have an 8 way XP pro box. We have a few desktops set up like this at work. Wrong OS at first SP Pro 32 bit. It worked but could use all 16GB of RAM. Switched to XP Pro 64 bit to use all the RAM.

As for gaming, if you want all the eye candy that DX10 gives you should be on vista. If the eye candy is not an issue go XP. That is until they start making vista only games. Who knows when that will happen.

Everyone should be turning off things that they do not use in their OS.

There were two controllers at the bottom. SCSI or fiber (depending on which controller you ordered). I remember added 2GB of memory for cache for each controller. The controllers had a total of 4GB of memory. This was back in 1999. I would not be surprised (if these are still sold) to see 8-16+ GB of memory on those controllers today.

Better off with a attic fan(s) or whole house fan. By lowering the heat load in the attic, your house will feel cooler. If the temp drops a little bit in the evening, a whole house fan is great. It sucks the air out of the house into the attic (the out) and cooler air is drawn in.

Those are a lot cheaper the a heat pump. Heat pump vs normal AC (or normal heater) heat pump is a lot more expansive to run VS ac. No contest here in Virginia. Even though the winters are no whee near as cold as places north, a regular gas/oil forced hot air furnace costs less to run then the heat pumps do. I know this cause there is a new housing development. Same construction in the homes (2X6 in exterior walls with more insulation), different heating/cooling systems. The heat pump based houses have the highest heating and cooling bills. The best (lowest bills) are the homes that use the water/slurry geothermal heating based system. Almost free AC. The temp is average 68 degrees from the ground year round here. And heating from 68 degrees is a lot cheaper then from 30 (or lower) degrees.
