Hell er... Dell has had dual quad core machine for a wile not just not the 3.0 ghz ones. Not sure on HP/Compaq/Dec what ever they are calling themselves now.
Many people still want the cd to re-rip the songs when the digital one dies. I have had to re-rip cds because of this. I moved my music to a new computer. The songs all copied but some got messed up. I think Apple now allows you to re-download songs you have already purchased, but the number of times is limited.
Keeping the cds all lined up on a shelf is not a big deal. (OK a bunch of shelves) I still don't see the problem with keeping the cds around. Yes I have moved a few times with all of them. I have a bunch of milk crates to store them in for the moves. I haven't had any of these cds fall apart or lose their data/music yet. Granted I keep them stored in a cool dry place. But isn't that how one is supposed to store cds?
I am not worried about losing the drive where the music is stored. It will be a pain to re-rip all the cds but it is not impossible. I do keep a backup but I have found that by coping the files a few times, the files start to get messed up. Then I re-rip those albums.
If the cd is going away I for one will be very annoyed unless there is some new format that isn't prone to hard drive crashes.
The ipod itself has screwed up songs a bunch of time over the last two years. The songs on the computer are fine while the one on the ipod is messed up. The only fix has been to format the ipod and resync. Annoying when song X play fine for 6 months then it starts to have static in it.
It's a small box that just magically streams all your content (across your various computers) to a single point, which can be hooked up to a TV.
not magically, either through your inhouse wireless or wired network.
Which can be a problem for regular non geekie people. Not everyone has a wireless network in their home. I have already gotten a call from three people who couldn't get their movies to work with this thing. Their imacs are connected directly to their modem or router. They do not have a wireless network. The computer is in a different room from their TV. I said they need to get a wireless router (Apple's website says 802.11g/n network like their airport wireless things). They were not happy to hear this.
just 28 mpg? I thought the CRX (those shoe looking things from the 80s) got upwards of 50 mpg. They are a two seater, small, light car. Timing chains were better then the belts, they actually didn't need repair if you changed the oil like your were supposed. I have had three cars all with over 200k when they were sold.(mustang, Chevy caviler, sunfire (same as acav i guess), grand marquee. A four banger mustang 200 when I sold it, 150k from the next guy and 230k from the next guy. Then the car got rear ended. The mustang was sold top people that I worked with so I still saw the car a lot. Until the car got hit the only things replaced were tires, spark plugs (every 75k), belts, hoses (150k intervals), breaks, and a few sets of seat covers. Change the oil every ~2000 miles. It is early according to most people but I have yet to have an oil related problem with any car/truck. The grand marquee is still going it has over 900k on it. Original engine, original trans. The trans fluid has been changed every ~50k miles. Again this car I still see all the time. And the thing still get 25 mpg. The shocks/struts were changed ~100-130k, don't know of many that last forever. Then again when shops give you lifetime warrantees, use them.
I wonder what the number of packages ms has? No really, if one counts the windows kernal (if one call it that) as the os and everything else is a 'package'. I didn't say packages that we want or even use, just what teh number of packages.
So calculator + notepad + paint + all the other crap = ???? number of 'packages'
actually not trolling I was just wondering how many things are installed. Maybe should say a fresh, clean install. Cause there are like 50-60 more things when people buy a prebuilt computer from dell, hp, or gateway.
you do realize that the family sedan and the bmw both get one from point a to point b. The family sedan costs 25k-30k (assuming one gets a boat load of extras) while the 5 series starts around $50k (3 series $30k, 7 series $70k). At least the 5 series has seats that don't feel like you are sitting on a wooden bench.
The main point is if both machines can do the same job, why pay a whole lot more to look pretty while doing it? That can be applied to both mac and vista. Ms hasn't proved to me that vista warrants me getting it. If they actually had stood their ground and said here is our new os. Now rewrite your software for it since the old unsafe, unsecured style no longer works. I might be a bit more interested. But ms backed down and changed the 32 bit version. Not sure on the 64 bit version.
at a drunk driving check point on news years eve a person driving a bmw tried to go right through the check point without stopping. I was behind them so i heard them say to the police. But I am driving a bmw, I do not have to stop for these things. Police pull over other cars not bmws. I am not making this up. I almost fell out of my car laughing though. When I got to the police officer I said that I would get on the radio and make sure that this person got pulled over all a lot for the rest of the night. Since the police officer gave the person a warning, he had their info. The police officer did just that. He said that car will be pulled over at least 6 more times tonight.
Who areeee these people? Who can't download the a Live CD, burn it, and reboot their computer. You don't even need to install it to evaluate it as a replacement option.
try the older (over 50) people. They may have not even had a computer until the last 2-3 years. Also A lot of people have software that they use where a linux equivalent doesn't exist. Or the one that does exist is lacking in functionality. If it takes two programs to do what took one in xp, they may not like it. The learning curve. Not everyone wants to learn something new. They did it this way before, and they want to do it that way now. It sucks but that is the way many people are.
Want to install it? It's all menu driven, with very simple wizards. Anyone who can't install it probably couldn't install Windows either.
true. I go a few further that these people are also the ones who don't install software or updates because they are afraid of breaking something. Good ro bad depending on what you are talking about installing.
A) You're not "breaking" it, you're replacing it. You can even keep your old OS as a bootable option, should you not want to replace it.
not every os give this choice. And with the default dell, hp taking all available disk space and making it ntfs, the only option is many distros is to delete the existing partitions and start over. Do you actually think these people back up their data and know where the software is at?
B) Consider this: Your old computer works, why would you ever break it?
C) It probably *doesn't* work when lots of people decide to try Linux. One day you replace your motherboard and Windows generates a blue screen whose only viable resolution (as per the MS Knowledgebase) is to re-install Windows completely (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401/en-us as an example, but there are lots more like this).
I have switched motherboards quite often and not had to reinstall. Update drivers yes. Totally reinstall, only if the person wanted to. Not every time. Switching motherboards and going to a totally different proccessor type and memory type. (i.e. PIII to an AMD FX60) all the drivers are different. Now if windows actually had a way to boot to a prompt and then update the drivers. (I can boot to a C:\ prompt but I have never tried to update the drivers from there) Then maybe one wouldn't have to reinstall. But ms wants people to use the graphic interface not the command line. Other then a failure, A major upgrade (replacing proc, RAM, motherboard) isn't it better to start clean? I do this for linux installs too (I back up first, format, install, restore). I am only restoring my files, stuff I made.
Unfortunately, manufacturers only include "recovery CDs" specific to the hardware they sold you - not full versions of Windows, so re-installing without buying another copy of Windows is impossible (unless you don't mind pirating a copy, and all the hassle that comes with that should Microsoft deactivate your key). Are you going to spend $200 and reward Microsoft for forcing vendors into the recovery-cd scheme, are would you fully investigate your options?
I have yet to have more then a 10-30 minute phone call to get windows reinstalled. There are cds with most computers, unless you didn't check off include reinstall cd/dvd. IF you didn't the instructions say to burn the CD (it is on the hard drive) Most people do not do this. The person setting up the computer is supposed to do this. I have used the same OEM xp cd with a bunch of people's computers. They have their code. Enter in their code. IF the install complains, call the phone number explain that you are reinstalling, give them the code, they give you a new one, your set. It is a PITA (pain in the ass) but it is doable and not too time consuming.
Changing OS may cost nothing financially, but for many people, their time isn't free.
I would like to see ms actually say if you have this computer: motherboard XXX, chip set NNN, controllers XXX, video card NNN, XXX amount of ram from this vender, DVD drive from XXX, and a XXX GB hard drive from NNN. Then if you have a bunch of problem you have a point. Ms is not selling hardware (beside the xbox) so it gives basic requirements.
Apple has a very small hardware list that they support. They do not have to worry about a huge selection of different hardware being used with their computers. They are selling the hardware. They better test it all beforehand. Since Apple has said in their license that OSX can only be used on approved Apple branded hardware. I cannot legally run OSX on anything but an approved apple branded computer. If apple opened up its software for all to use, would everyone have a perfect install? Some people will have perfect error free installs to be sure. But I think there would be a large number of people blaming Apple and/or hardware vendors for OSX not working perfectly on their computer.
if one has a big case (front to back) the card pictured is not an issue. One machine I have now has a 7800GTX with the extender on it so it can slide into an extra bracket. It helps keep the card aligned. There are cases out there that can handle these long cards. But changing a case can be a pain.
OK it shows two connectors. One six way plug and one (it looks like anyway) eight way plug. I haven't seen any power connector that has an 8-way plug yet. Granted I am no expert, but the 1000 watt power supplies I have seen do not have this connector yet.
Third party hardware that the company completely owns and has complete say over what happens to it is very different from storing your data in someone else's house and they can pull the plug on your data any time they want to. Or they turn around and say you want access to your data? It'll cost you $$$ per month. The fee may be fine for some companies but not for others. I am more worried about google indexing all the data. Who is to say that google will not use other companies data for their own uses. This could give google a massive library of information for it to use.
If a program doesn't work unless it runs as adin it is the programs fault not the os fault.
It is ms's fault for allowing it to go on for so long. Vista should have been a complete rewrite that also included a rewrite of application running on it. Then the applications should heve been forced to run in user space. Or use a VM and install XP, 200, 98, 95 (I still see people running 95 and 98). With vista being the guarding all the external connections. But MS caved in to companies who do not want to rewrite their old software. Their old software has to "just work".
Apple stops support for older software, hell even with in the same major revision number. OSX 10.0, 10.1, 10.2 same major revision number? Daylight savings time fix, only 10.4 (10.5 not offically out yet) supported. No patches for 10.3 or older from Apple. APple say to the software companies rewrite your software to work with our new OS on major revision changes. MS should do the same. But they don't. Supporting all the old software is killing MS.
Rewrite software for the new OS. Yes people are going to switch to a different OS. Not everyone will switch. If the software was written for user space instead in system space it would be better for all.
same can be said for Apple users. I have seen the Apple users here enter in their password when prompted too. Why while surfing web site they got prompted for their password is a scary thing. They were not doing updates, or installing any software just browsing web sites. The web sites were in different languages so couldn't understand what they were looking at. I did get the URLS and have then blocked on the main network firewall. Their response as to why they entered in their password was: "I always enter in my password when my mac asks me to. It is a mac I never have to worry about any bad thing" Since these are faculty, they have to have admin/root access to their machines.
Policy kicked in and their macs were rebuilt. The main point is that stupid user is not limited to just ms, it exists everywhere.
As far as the firewall goes, a single application is can be granted access. It has been that way in XP for quite some time now. NOw turning off the firewall that is abad idea. Either turn back on the default behavior of the XP firewall or use the firewall execptions. The default behavior is to prompt the user if they want to allow a program to access.
What school did you go to that didn't have computers weren't used by all students? I was in grade school in the 70s and early 80s and we had the apple II and those pet things with the tape drive. 5.25 floppies were later. Not everyone was required to take a typing classes but everyone was on the computers at some point. Either cad drawing, pascal programming, also a whole slew of games that helped in math, spelling, grammer (OK I sucked at the spelling and grammer ones). They added whole rooms with computers as I got to high school. This was not a well do to school. The computers were bought with funds from donations from the community. Not with state funds. I believe they just got white boards last year. The original blackboards (from the 50s) were still in use. They had been painted over with that blackboard paint a bunch of times. We had a smaller classes. 300 was an average class size. Come on, what kind of school did you goto? A single room school house where K-12 is all tought at the same time?
need to listed to your ipod, fine either: 1. use the USE/firewire charger that plugs into an outlet and a set of headphones/speakers 2. get a stand alone ipod player. it sits on your desk you put your ipod into it and you play your music.
There are bunch (granted they all cost a lot) of ipod players that sit on your desk. No network, no connection to one's computer needed.
The person bought an ipod, they can go buy the rest of the things needed to play/charge their ipod.
the slot loading DVD/CD drive is nice till you really start to use it. Apple has stopped repairing the macbook and macbook pros around here since the drives last 3-4 months and then need repair. Either the felt stuff comes off then goes into the drive, or a CD/DVD doesn't lock in and will not load.
Granted I have setup a USB external drive for most of our people now but the other people with regular tray loading drives do not have this problem. Also these people use something in the drive over 90% of the time. They are watching movies/playing music/loading somehthing with the drive over 90% of the time the laptop is on.
I know it is not cool and no 'Apple' to use a tray loading drive in your notebook but I'd like to see it. I am tired of people calling me for a broken Apple DVD drive.
2) if you can run w2k or xp on a system you'll almost certainly be able to run Vista on it with no changes.
in a word... no.
vista likes dual core (or 64 bit capable) cpus. It can run on single core but you will not like how it runs. I think vista was supposed to be only 64 bit. During the testing on beta all the 64 bit capable machine ran it a lot better. And the 1 GB of RAM. I think ms has a deal with the RAM people, putting in 2 GB makes xp, 2k, and vista much happier.
remember that 2k runs fine on a PIII 800. Even with 2 GB of RAM the PIII 800 has a hard time with vista, so our tests showed. I have installed 2k and XP on a PII 350 machine with 512 MB RAM. It ran, i wouldn't want to do anything demanding on the machine but it does work.
Nowadays just working it not enough. It has to work, and owrk well, and work in a reasonable amount of time (the faster the batter)
The EU wants apple to allow other products made by other companies to work with itunes.
Jobs points the finger at the music companies while the EU want to use there (enter in mp3 player (other then ipod) here) with itunes. Either Jobs is totally clueless or he wants to keep the lock in since apple is a hardware company. If itunes was to work with other companies products then apple might start to charge for itunes? Ipods used to work with other music programs (digital juke box or something like that dell sold/sell it) so it is not unheard of to allow an ipod work with something other then itunes.
I have yet to buy a song/movie/tv show from itunes store. I only use itunes to sync the ipod. I don't even use itunes to rip the songs from CD. Itunes leaves out the cd album art. I thought with the newer version that album art would be included. It is if you sign in to the apple store.
If Itunes really make no money for apple, then why does itunes want to go to that store all the time?
There's no consistency in file formats, even MS' own products more often than not bungle when it comes to opening an older version of their file formats.
?? What? please cite examples. The only time I ever saw a newer version have issues opening a old files was when lots (and I mean lots) of custom coding was done in that old file. This was with excel (the spreadsheet program that is way to big for it's own good). I have never seen a newer version of word, or pp screw up. I uninstall access whenever I see it. That dam thing is just wrong.
Not exactly a situation where anyone "hates" Symbian, secretly or otherwise, more a situation where certain platforms work out better for certain companies.
OS for a phone?... oh wait I was thinking of a different king of symbian. Once girls get a symbian, guys are out of luck.

If you open up a link in the article there are a picture that shows a power connector. The link is here:

A single room school house where K-12 is all tought at the same time?
need to listed to your ipod, fine either:
1. use the USE/firewire charger that plugs into an outlet and a set of headphones/speakers
2. get a stand alone ipod player. it sits on your desk you put your ipod into it and you play your music.
I see you do not drive then....
missle command maxed out too. well it did for me on the atari 2600 (dammit again i tell me age)
Once girls get a symbian, guys are out of luck. yes, I know this is slashdot...
you must be an apple developer since 10.5 is not out yet
Please for everyone's sake let it not be the smell of the sea at low tide.....
